This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

The traditional fifth anniversary gift is something made of wood, or "Bois" in French.

Bois is our fifth anniversary ale, loosely brewed in the English-style Old Ale tradition using our house Belgian yeast strain and then blended using the solera method. A portion of each of our anniversary ales is saved in our barrels and blended in with the next year's production, providing more complexity and depth of character that comes with age. Layered with complex flavors of dark fruit,vanilla, oak, and burnt sugar, Bois is a robust ale, surely the perfect beer to mark this major milestone.

750 ml wax capped bottle, 04/02/13 stamped on the bottle so I'll assume that's the bottling date. Served in a DFH snifter, the beer pours a murky dark reddish/brown color with about a half inch tan head that didn't stick around for very long. Not much lacing, either. Aroma is sweet and malty, the brew smells like vanilla, bourbon, dark fruit (figs, plums, raisins), molasses, brown sugar and caramel. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also some red grapes, maple and woodiness noticeable. It's a little boozy, but not as much I thought it would be. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's slick and a bit syrupy with moderate carbonation. I thought this was pretty good. Is it $35 a bottle good, I'm not quite sure. But I did like this a lot!

1 pint 9.4 fl oz thick brown glass bottle with beeswax-ed over pry-off pressure cap acquired at a bottle shop in the L.A. area years ago for $30.00 USD and served into an Odell stem-tulip in me friend's gaff in high altitude Fort Collins, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are average; I've tried other beers in this solera series and they disappointed. 15% ABV. 2013 anniversary. Reviewed as an old ale because the label clearly identifies it as such.

Served cold and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide. Pale light khaki colour. Okay consistency. Smooth. Somewhat even. No lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is awful - about 40 seconds - but it's forgivable given the 15% ABV.

BODY: Dark opaque brown-black. Nontransparent; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

Appears aptly carbonated. Not unique or special for the style. It's not unappealing...

AROMA: Chewy fig, appealing bourbon (replete with vanilla and a kiss of oak), burnt sugars, hint of molasses, caramel, toffee, raisin, and some medicinal notes (e.g. a hint of grape).

An inoffensive aroma of average strength. Not particularly appealing, but the bourbon is nice.

No yeast character or hop notes are detectable. Fruity booziness is present throughout.

TASTE: Chewy raisin, warm boozy fig, molasses, caramel. Some muted reticent bourbon character, including a hint of vanilla. No rich oak character comes through. Treacle. Depleted dark fruits. A kiss of sweet port. Sugarcane. Rum-soaked alcohol-redolent fruit. Dates. A flavour I'd assert is tobacco - though I've never really smoked.

It's boozy as all hell, and has no balance whatsoever; it's a chaotic mess. Incohesive, and certainly not gestalt.

Complicated, but not intricate in a refined sense. Lacks subtlety. Very overt and heavy-handed, lacking a focus.

INTENSE flavours. But they're not really deep. Flavour duration is well above average.

TEXTURE: Chewy, smooth, relatively dry, withered....it feels like caramelized candied raisin. Tough. Heavy. Full-bodied. Unnecessarily heavy and weighty on the palate. Sticky. Lightly syrupy. Overcarbonated (in spite of its age and ABV). This is overbearing on the palate and impedes drinkability. Certainly not refreshing.

Poor presence on the palate. This texture fits in with the conventions of an old ale, but does a poor job attempting to complement the taste.

OVERALL: Hmm. She's a sipper, and the booziness is obvious from the first sip. This is yet another overpriced overrated mess of a solera beer from The Bruery, and isn't a beer I'd recommend to anyone. I'm glad I have help from a friend trying to finish this bottle; I'd hate to try to take one down alone. Not sure why people seem to love this. And can we get a moratorium on bottling difficult-to-drink dessert beers in large format bottles?

Big toffee aroma, very rich. Prune, raisin, and dates add complexity.

Very plum, prune, and raisin flavor, with nice sweet balance, a hit of heat, and rich caramel sweetness. Pretty hot, but delicious.

Big thanks to Doug for breaking out this bottle - much appreciated! Bois pours a thick and deep, syrupy brown color that's only translucent up near the top of the brew, right below the head. The cap is light-tan in color and plumps up nicely before it breaks down into a swampy film and collar on the top of the viscous brew. Pretty much what you'd expect from a super high gravity old ale.

Sticky caramel, sweet molasses, brown sugar, and a heavy, heavy booziness that flows in and out of your nostrils, from one side of the other. This beer smells big. It smells big and sweet... and that's because it *is* big and sweet. Mild hints of vanilla and plenty of sweet dark fruits creep out, rounding out what is quite a large and robust aroma.

I take one sip and my palate is immediately coated with a warm, boozy, and sticky lathering of caramel, toffee, and sweet, plum and raisin preserves. The booze is ever-present and a touch more than warming, almost crossing over into "hot" territory. I will say, though, that the intense booziness sure helps to cut the equally intense malt sweetness that Bois is made of.

The afterthought is still loaded with finishing sweetness; toffee and caramelized sugars, with fading touches of sweet plums and raisins as an nutty and oaky kiss of death swoops in and leaves your palate feeling like you just made out with a stave covered in brown sugar. The body is thick and plump like Anna Nicole Smith yet still sexy smooth like Cameron Diaz's first appearance in "The Mask".

I still struggle with the question of "why does The Bruery choose to bottle their borderline hard alcohol level beers in gigantic ass bottles," as this would be another solid choice for twelve ouncers or even nips. It'll take you a while to trounce through six ounces even, but it'll be very tasty and decadent along the way. A very nice old ale that's as robust on the palate as it sounds on paper... or, excuse me, papier.

A: A murky brown with a nice tan head.

S: Initially there's a big dark fruit presence, but as the beer opens up a bit you get slammed with bourbon. Beautiful smell.

T: Right off the bat there's a sweet taste, almost cider-like. A huge bourbon caramel blast comes through shortly after along with a beautiful finish of coffee, chocolate, toffee, and bourbon. Unbelievably complex.

M: Great body and perfect carbonation. As this one warms up, the booziness comes through.

O: A beer I will always crave. Couldn't drink this guy every day, but The Bruery nailed this style. Would love to age this one.

750ml bottle at fridge temp into a snifter.

Pours a murky dark brown color, minimal light tan colored head, nice legs.

Big sweet caramel, molasses, lots of bourbon booze, lots of nuttiness, possibly from the yeast.

Follows the aroma, with a bit more complexity, lots of dark fruits mingling with big caramel and molasses sweetness, smooth bourbon booziness, slight coconut, decent barrel character.

Big, fairly thick, sweet and boozey.

A pretty stand up BA old ale, on par with what I would expect from the bruery. Big, sweet, and boozey. Maybe too sweet?

Poured into a now defunct Buckbean taster glass. Brown pour, almost no head on it. Aroma was nice and luxurious, we had this a day or two after we drank the American oak version, and this one let the bourbon come out a lot more than the former. Lots of that boozy cracker jack aroma going for it, quite delicious if you ask me.

Taste, strong, but delicate, it doesn't let the alcohol assault your mouth. Plenty of that caramel, more toffee this year than Fruet seemingly. They are quite similar. A little bit of vanilla and coconut. Dallop of brown sugar. Molasses-ish. Despite the ability to absorb the high alcohol content, it is not a viscous or heavy beer per se.

These anniversary beers from the Bruery are solid bets to keep being good and like this every year. The first couple were a little hot at first, but it seems Fruet and Bois were good to go, and the best ones yet. Kudos. Easily worth $30.

25.4oz bottle poured into a snifter. 04/11/13 on the bottle.

A: Pours a clearish dark brown ruby appearing almost black in the glass. An off white head sits on top, dissipating in a minute or two. Leaves some spots of lacing on the glass.

S: Initial bourbon right off the bat with a sweet dark fruitiness as well. A bit of breadiness as well as toffee or carmel. Yeast adds almost a belgian dubbel sort of aroma.

T: What a finely tuned blend here. There is the obvious bourbon flavoring but layers upon layers of complexity behind that. Great dark fruit character that gives you a raisiny, grape or fig quality. Sweet malts that provide rich carmel, toffee and vanilla. Oak mellows out the flavor, bourbon adds the perfect aftertaste.

M: Full body with a great creamy mouthfeel. Bourbon doesnt come across too hot but is certainly warming. Very smooth for 15%. Mild carbonation, finish is clean considering all the sweetness going on here.

Overall I wish I had more of this beer. Really tasty and only going to get better with age. As I said this one has layers of flavor that are blended fantastically. Cheers to many more Bruery anniversaries!

A - Dark mahogany, light mocha-finger width head which dissipates quickly, carbonation rising, zero lacing.

S - Bourbon, aged fruit-figs?, raison, cherry

T - Aged fruit-raison/prune/mild grape, black licorice, very sweet chocolate, carmel, bourbon. finish does come with a bourbon/licorice heat.

M - Full body, great carbonation, frothy, creamy, raison/prune lingers

O - Wow. the aged fruit/bourbon is excellent. mouth is awesome. Yes, fairly hot at points- but at 15ABV-it is very drinkable. makes my tummy warm and puts a smile on my face. I would suggest to split this bomber into at least thirds. Very thick and very sweet. Yes- it was $30 but if you got a few bucks to spurge- certainly recommend it.

750ml matte gold wax enclosed bottle, one recently arrived, and under dire circumstances, it would seem, to Alberta. #welcometoABWinterBitches

This beer pours a hazy, very dark red-brick amber hue, with three fingers of puffy, silkily foamy, and somewhat bubbly pale tan head, which leaves nothing beyond a few random specks of lace near the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of concentrated caramel and toffee pudding, with a certain flor-heavy fortified red wine yeastiness, besotted French oak staves, a prune, dried cherry, and raisin fruitiness, melted brown sugar, rather hot, nose and upper palate crinkling boozy Bourbon, citrus cream, and a certain old musty basement essence. The taste is big and sweet, the heady toffee and caramel gaining a bit of a watery treacle co-conspirator, followed closely by more dark fruits, now muddled and wine-like in their bearing, cold, reduced demarara sugar, soft cognac and Bourbon barrel notes - vanilla and alcohol, mostly - a weirdly ethereal yeasty essence, some mild milky cocoa, and a further isolated wood grain alcohol that seems to pop up at random intervals.

The carbonation is quite understated, and damned near absent at times, almost to the point of inspiring a Trent Reznor ode, the body a dense medium-heavy weight, and actually quite incredibly smooth, very little else putting up their dukes here, once gain, incredulously. It finishes sweet, sure, and more than a tad boozy, but it all seems well restrained, controlled via nods of the head and ancient scripts.

Wow, I had my doubts, but this 5 Year anniversary offering from the Bruery (would, normally, would be so trite in such situations, but here it is, so very worthy!) delivers, even at this early juncture. Maybe not the most complex old ale out there, but it has more than enough 'old' character to back up this pedigree, amongst a stellar bourbon and wine-adjacent woodiness that brings us full circle, of a sort. And maybe I could complain about the generally AWOL bubbles situation, but meh, did I not already mention what style of beer this was?

Angels Baseball finally televised in the Bay Area vs the A's this past Thursday - Sunday, and now tonight on ESPN vs Texas. Time to open this Bois all to myself.

A - Dark, dark Black Cherry Red in the 12oz tulip it's poured in. Solid 2" head but retention fades fast as expected. Looks beautiful.

S - Moment of truth of where my $30 went. Boom! Not at all dissapointed. Big vanilla bourbon barrel, accompanied by toffee, caramel, big flavor or raisins, and chocolate. Everything is in harmony. Nothing overpowers. All seems to be in place with a fair amount of heat on the nose, but not nearly the amount you'd expect from the 15%ABV.

T - Matches the nose with the perfect amount of heat on the back but not nearly the amount the 15% would suggest. If it's too hot, get the hell out the kitchen.... Everything is in complete harmony for such a big beer. Almost speechless. I've seen reviews saying this is too sweet. Gimme a break. Yeah, it's tad bit sweet as expected for the style and ABV, but make no mistake about it, I'll finish this bomber myself tonight and am having a hard time finding any flaws with this beer. The barrel aspect of this beer is near perfect. Again, see smell. Heavier on the dark fruits the further you get into it. Delicious.

M - that sticky barrel lingers like you'd prefer your resinous hops to from a favorite DIPA. Not at all syrupy or thick, but not thin either. Quite easy to put down for the ABV. Barrel lingers but keeps you coming back for your next sip. Before I knew it, 12oz gone in 25-30 min.

O - wish I bought another to see how it ages. $60 would have been worth it for two. Although not apples to apples (kinda), this beer is everything I expected out of 2013 Sucaba that 2013 Sucaba never delivered. For me at least. I'm not at all a fan of overly sweet beers or beers that run over $20 but this is one of the best bourbon barrel aged beers I've had.

Recommended if you have the funds.

750ml waxed and capped bottle into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a 2 finger frothy cream colored head with moderate retention. Beer is a dark, almost opaque brown. Lacing is thick but sticks close to the head. Oily legs. Real nice.

Nose is sweet booze. Molasses, brown sugar, caramel and oak. Deep and enticing.

Opens molasses, honey, dark plum and prunes. Brown sugar, leather and booze in the middle. Oak, caramel, toffee, and more molasses at the finish. Ends sweet and hot with a sweet, caramel and molasses aftertaste. Solid.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Slick and oily in the mouth and goes down hot and sticky. Finishes messy with a lingering aftertaste that coats the mouth. A touch thin.

Pretty par for the course for a Bruery Anniversary big. Big and bold with accented sweet flavors. Pretty straightforward but still enjoyable.

Pours a very murky brown color, with some orange hues around the edges. Not so much cloudy or hazy as it is murky...like a shallow river after a storm. With such high ABV, the head is fleeting, but while it's there, it's a tan color of uniform bubbles.

Notes of bourbon, vanilla, toffee and leather dominate the nose, particularly the bourbon. It smells every bit of 15% ABV.

What a great taste. It tastes like a toffee coffee cake. Between the toffee, vanilla, Belgian yeast and burnt sugar, it could pass for a dessert. Not sure if there is such a thing as bourbon cake, but that's what this tastes like. It's amazingly good.

This beast is surprisingly drinkable. It starts off somewhat sweet and very smooth, very buttery feel. Full bodied and almost chewy. The heat builds in intensity as it works it's way a cross the tongue. Finishes with bourbon warmth and a bit of sweetness from the vanilla notes. A slight burn to the lips remains til the next sip.

A spectacular beer and well worth the $30 I probably paid for it. Obviously a celebratory beer.

Appearance - Dark and murky reddish brown. Not much of a head. Nothing after a while.

Smell - Bourbon, toffee, buckets of caramel. Quite fruity.

Taste - Sweet and bourbony. Even fruitier. Toffee and caramel. Boozy. Even a little bitter. Maybe that's just an abundance of alcohol.

Mouthfeel - A sipper. Boozy as hell. Medium heavy, not as syrupy as I thought it might be.

Overall - Way over the top, but good. I always like these beers.

Pours darker and hazier than a traditional old ale. Looks like a dark cider. Luckily the appearance is the only down side to this beer.

Decided to open early to see if it's something that I want to buy again and age. Bottle says to age for a decade. The smell is a very oak boozy whiskey. Very strong.

The taste is very good. The heat is strong from the booze but overall it's a nice smooth feel with all that booze that will only get better with age. I felt like certain taste were trying to come through but the oak and whiskey overpowered. Again, with some serious aging this beer can only get better.

Overall, I really liked this beer early in it life that I will definitely get a few to age for years.

Appearance: (4.5)
Pours a very murky, cloudy, dark brown with a 2 finger tall light brown head which quickly recedes leaving zero lacing. The head eventually settles to a firm, half finger's height. Massive alcohol legs.

Aroma: (4.75)
Sweet figs jump right out of the glass towards your nostrils, followed by layers upon layers of dark fruit; black cherries, freshly sliced plums. Underneath the fruit there are aromas of sun worn leather, sweet caramel, toffee and bready biscuit malt backbone. The massive barrel presence sounds cascading notes of vanilla, coconut and some nice bourbon sweetness. For 15%, the alcohol is hidden extraordinarily well.

Taste: (4.75)
Staying consistent with the fruit forward nose, sweet figs greet your palate immediately followed by plums, cherries and a distinctly musty leather-like character that is attained by the extensive aging process that Bois has gone under. Middle of the taste, there is a bright twang of a slightly tart cherries, again from oxidation in the bourbon barrels. Before the off dry finish, a massive, sweet malt backbone closes the ale with notes of toffee, caramel and sweet breads. Lingering impressions of figs, plums, cherries and a unique nuttiness. Huge barrel presence in the finish with light tannins, vanilla and coconut. The 15% is masterfully hidden, but some alcohol does peak through as the beer warms.

Mouthfeel: (4.5)
Very robust, slightly oily in texture thanks to the high ABV. Moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: (4.5)
Wow, this is an absolutely amazing Old Ale. Complex, rich and hides the ABV incredibly well. The Bruery uses the Solera Method in aging their anniversary ales; meaning every year, The Bruery puts out a new batch of the same recipe, but each year they hold back a sizable portion to blend in with the most recent ale. In other words, Bois has a portion of every other previous anniversary beer in it, adding more depth and complexity to it than the other previous anniversary ales had upon release. This is a truly masterfully Old Ale, that is sweet, yet never cloying. Highly, highly recommended. Cannot wait until next year's version!

Dark caramel color and opaque. It has a viscous and flat appearance.

Huge boozy notes of bourbon... Oak, vanilla, caramel, toffee.

The cloying sweetness is just too much. It's boozy as hell, but I can appreciate that. Caramel, toffee, and vanilla with just a touch of dry wood.

Mouthfeel is syrupy and sugary sweet. Very thick.

This was just way too sweet for my liking. The flavor profile was nice, but fighting through even as pint was a chore. That, combined with the price point, makes me suggest pass on it.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy dark-brown. Fairly large light-beige head that dissipated quickly.

Smell: Bourbon notes dominate, with some brown sugar, dark fruit (think raisins and prunes) and mild toffee notes. It's been aged for a while but this currently has no alcohol presence, which is surprising for the ABV.

Taste: Bourbon, some fruity sherry notes, raisins, some brown sugar, and toffee. The beer finishes slightly sweet with the Bourbon, brown sugar, and dark fruit notes. I'm not sure it's the age but this was considerably less sweet than most of the other Bruery's Bourbon bal-aged Anniversary beers.

Mouth-feel: On the light side of full-bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall: I notice the dark fruit and sherry-type notes come more to the forefront with each new Bruery Anniversary variant. I'm not sure if it's age but the sweetness was fairly subdued which combined with the subdued alcohol presence makes drinking this beer a fine experience.

Pours a murky brown color with a slight reddish hue. The head is short and dense and settles into a light ring.

The aroma is sweet. Big vanilla, bourbon, brown sugar and caramel notes. There is a boozy tart cherry aroma.

The taste is of a brown bread malt. Plenty of sweetness to go around. There is a big dark berry sweetness that is quite noticeable. It's a bit tart as well. Caramel and subtle bourbon, some vanilla. Cherry? Lots of booze could use more of an earthy malt presence. Little too sweet.

The feel is moderate with semi soft carbonation. Quite sweet and boozy on the palate. Sticky in the finish. Slight belly burn.

A good but not great big beer. A little one dimensional.

A: Really dark brown with a good tan head going for it. Just looked amazing in the glass.
S: A LOT of dark chocolate was going on in this bad boy. Has good bourbon smells, oak/smoke, and vanilla.
T: Tasted everything I smelled plus some dried fruits. Very well balanced with all the characters, especially the bourbon. Hid the boozy-ness. A little more carbonated than I'd prefer, but still excellent levels.
M: Awesome full bodied and silky texture. It's so smooth that you kind of don't want to take your time with it...
O: Definitely one of the best beers I've had yet. I'm going to have to spring for another...

Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Hazy melted caramel. Thin beige head that dissipates to a thin rim around the edge of the glass. A minor amount of carbonation visible at the surface.

S: Intense notes of dried fruit including figs and raisins. Sweet undertones including caramel, vanilla extract. Bready. Moderate booze notes of tawny port wine and bourbon.

T: Malt profile dominated by dried fruit including apricot, raisins and figs. Sweet aftertaste of caramel. Booze comes though strong as bourbon, with some smoother notes of port wine.

M: Full and sticky. Warmth from the booze.

D: Does it taste great? Yes. Is it drinkable in the sense that I can sit here and drink a bottle alone? No. This should be shared among friends that will enjoy the complexity of the beer. The alcohol is a bit overpowering and I hope I can find another bottle to age with the hopes that it mellows out. Overall though, very complex nose and flavor profile, and quite enjoyable for those reasons.

Bright iridescent auburn coloring poured a bit cloudy and supported a thin layer of loose knit bubbles.

Dried fruits hit the nose but then a rush of chocolate, toffee, and caramel hit next. What's exciting is that it is all surrounded by a strong maple aroma that blends with all the aromas.

The taste is so creamy with a light butter and brown sugar. The dried fruit presence is light but I get prunes, dates and raisin. Then chocolate, toffee(which was strongest), and maple all rush in for a vastly complex and ethereal experience.

The feel is full and creamy as well, with a slight thickness and a completely hidden 15 pct ABV.

A: pours a murky brown with a finger of beige head that fades into a frothy ring with no lacing.

S: lots of sweetness here: caramel, vanilla, brown and burnt sugar, and a little toffee. There are some oak notes and dark fruit underneath, but mostly it's a barrage of sweet smells.

T: sweetness dominates here as well. Caramelized sugar, caramel, vanilla, toffee, and brown sugar. Oak and sweet bread come through bsfore a moderately boozy finish.

M: medium-thick body with lowish carbonation, this beer is sticky sweet and a bit hot.

O: a good beer overall, but so sweet and boozy that it's difficult to drink more than a few ounces. I'm glad I could try it on tap and not have to tackle a whole or half a bottle.

The Bruery is becoming king of the "Big Beer" and this beer is no different.

The head on this one is an inch and a half of toasted bread soft tan. There really is a lot of carbonation for a 15% brew, but it is very bubbly and the head fades quickly leaving just a skim and no lace to speak of. Body is a deep root beer brown with a considerable murky feel to it.

The nose immediately speaks to my heart with big rich Bourbon tones all over. Buttered toffee, carmel and molasses are all very present. Definitely smells sweet.

Enters the mouth just as expected... sweet, but not overly so. Dark fruits dance with raisin bread and rum cake. A hint of sour fruit twang hits the back of the taste buds as you take repeat sips. There is nice balance here for how big and rich it is. So much complexity with the dark fruit, big alcohol, bready sweetness and even a bit of tartness. This one is definitely a sipper.

Mouthfeel is very pleasant, thick but not heavy. A perfect after dinner beer. A wonderfully complex monster of a brew.

A - Dark murky brown. Completely opaque. Amber towards the bottom. Thin layer of dirty white head. 45

S- Intense bourbon, charred oak and vanilla aromas. Toffee, brown sugar, molasses.

T - Huge barrel notes: sweet vanilla and bourbon with a big charred oak presence. Toffee, dark caramel, raisins, brown sugar. Incredibly smooth for the ABV.

M - Full body. Creamy. Light carbonation.
