Double layer of wax extremely annoying to get off. Finally get the cap off and it gushes everywhere. GRRR.

A: A really dark brown pour. Smallish tan head that fizzes out fast. Decent retention but zero lacing.

S: Big super sweet caramel and molasses notes. Toffee too. Mild raisin. Rye presence isn't strong but you get a decent whiff when you swirl it. Boozy sting.

T: Huge monsterously sweet caramel, molasses and toffee. Extremely sweet. Rye is more noticeable here, providing a very strong sharp rye whiskey note. Mild dark fruits in the middle. Big big beer, huge booziness and stinging alcohol in the aftertaste. Warms the belly immediately.

M: Heavy, cloyingly sweet.

O: Well, I wasn't a fan of the bourbon version even though I loved Cuir and Fruet. Too harsh and too sweet. I like this better than the bourbon version however. The bourbon made this beer even more sweet, this one is attempting to balance with the spicy rye whiskey bite. It's still very sweet and super boozy. I think it could benefit from some age on it. Except there's no way I'm dropping the mega $$ on this one again for an experiment. Alas.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Dark ruby body. Flecks of amber in the light. Pours with a small khaki head. Maintains a collar forever.

Smell - Whiskey and dark fruits. Brown sugar. Booze all over. Less intense whiskey than the bourbon version.

Taste - Dark fruits and whiskey. Tons of booze. Brown sugar, but not as rich as the bourbon version.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Boozy as hell. Heavy. Quite the sipper.

Overall - Boozy as all getout. As usual. It's still good.

Appearance: Slightly cloudy dark-brown with a modest sized light-beige head that dissipated fairly quickly.

Smell: Moderate whiskey notes, brown sugar, dark fruit notes (think raisins and prunes) and mild toffee notes. Nice aromas but my initial impression is it's slightly muted in comparison to previous versions of the Anniversary beers.

Taste: Whiskey, some fruity sherry notes, raisins, some brown sugar, mild spicy rye notes and mild oak notes. The beer finishes drier and less sweet than the bourbon bal-aged versions of the Anniversary beers. The aging in the rye Whiskey barrel is a nice touch. Very mild alcohol presence, great for the ABV.

Mouth-feel: Medium-bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall: The rye whiskey aging results in a nice anniversary beer variation compared to the Bourbon bal-aged versions, resulting in a drier and cleaner finishing beer. The Anniversary beers are always top notch and this one continues the tradition.

Poured at right around 55 degrees into a Bruery snifter, obviously because beer tastes better from its own glassware.

A - Nice off-white head atop a medium brown body with a hint of red. Retention is incredible.

S - Spicy wood, lots of sweetness, candied prunes and a hint of black cherry, light bread.

T - Sweet yet boozy candied prunes, spiced wood with nice and sweet caramel notes, more dark fruits coming through, caramel and black cherries on the finish turn to a slight dryness. There is a slight heat on the throat that falls quickly as the sweetness takes over. It is hard to tell where the spices come from, but I suspect that they are mostly from the barrel and not the overly sweet beer that was within the barrel.

M - Rather thick, which I prefer for the flavors.

O - When I popped the cap, the aroma was terrible. Great great once poured. I like the flavors as well, but it is a bit sweet for the possible complexity that it could let wise provide. It is like a more complex Melange 3, which doesn't really improve it when so sweet. The great thing about the BA Papier set was that they weren't so sweet as base beers, so the barrels added a lot. I hope age will kill the sweetness while allowing for some of the potential complexities to remain, but I fear that won't happen. In the end, still a pretty good beer.
