A - Pours a clear dark caramel color with half a finger of tan head. Head doesn't last too long, but maintains a thin ring.
S - Fantastic coffee aroma. Nutty and a bit earthy. Mild brown sugar aroma, and very faint ethanol. Can't say I get much of a barrel aroma, other than some mild vanilla, but this smells heavenly.
T - Unlike the aroma, in the taste I get an immediate hit of bourbon flavors, vanilla and a bit of dry oak, before the coffee takes over. The coffee element is wonderful. Minimal bitterness with a full-bodied nutty flavor and some earthiness. I've enjoyed many beers with a strong coffee component (FBS, Peche Mortel, etc.), but this may be my favorite use of coffee in a beer. I think I really need to get down to the Portola coffee lab. The brown sugar element is quite mild in the flavor, and is accompanied by a bit of earthy bitterness that cuts right through any sweetness.
M - If I were tasting this in winter, it might be a bit on the thin side. But, for summer, it is very nice. Never gets too sweet, and finished a bit on the dry/earthy side.
O - Very impressed with this one. May need to get some more. Not sure I get much barleywine character in this, but the coffee element is so fantastic I didn't miss it.

Dark tawny and molasses brown. Moderate khaki-colored head. Leaves spots and irregular trails of wispy lacing down the glass. Pretty enough, but nothing spectacular. Looks fairly standard all things considered, though is somewhat sticky for the known ABV and barrel aging.
Excellent, expressive aroma of freshly ground coffee in the aroma. It's got a nice spice and earthy, bitter coffee punch. This reminds me quite a bit of the aroma on BCBCS. The coffee is strikingly familiar. As that beer happens to be one of my favorites, I'm quite impressed so far with the aroma on this one. There's a touch of a roast, chocolate, earthy accompanying character as well, but the incredible coffee character certainly leads the way.
As with the aroma, this reminds me so much of BCBCS. The similar profiles of coffee and barrel are here. Vanilla, oak, even some char and chocolate combine exceptionally well with the coffee. I want to come off as a genius and suggest that the same coffee is used here as in Goose Island's beer, but I won't go that far. Well balanced and drinkable for what's here.
Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Appropriate, though not particularly rich or decadent. Quite sticky, however.
Fantastic. If BCBCS had a barleywine brother, this would be it. Delicious beer.

S - Tons of sweet coffee, cream, vanilla, and brown sugar make up a really a good nose
T - Loads of coffee but its not bitter; it's sweet with caramel, brown sugar, and vanilla. The sweetness comes through in the end
M - Syrupy thick body with a light astringent from the coffee
O - Really coffee forward beer barleywine that has a good balance between the sweetness and the coffee

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Brown body. Ruby red when held up to a candle. Nice off-white head. Thick collar.
Smell - Rich coffee. No acidity. Bourbon. Vanilla. Caramel. But mostly coffee and barrel.
Taste - Bourbon more prominent. Vanilla also. Brown sugar and caramel sweetness. The coffee is less rich, but strong. Blends right into an oaky bitterness in the end.
Mouthfeel - So this will sound weird, but it isn't thick and sweet enough. It could use a bit of body.
Overall - A vast improvement over Mash. The coffee is a fantastic addition.

Appearance: Dark brown color with slight red highlights. The beer has a light beige head that slowly faded. Slightly cloudy but a nice looking beer.
Smell: Coffee, brown sugar and perhaps a touch of Bourbon. The coffee is upfront but nicely integrated.
Taste: Coffee, brown sugar, the slightest hint of Bourbon show up initially. Some mild tannic oak notes creep through in the finish. I pick up some mild fruity notes as well but I think the coffee notes may be masking some of the other flavors. The alcohol is very subdued for something 12.5% ABV.
Mouth-feel: On the light side of medium-bodied with a moderate level of carbonation.
Overall: When the Bruery announced this beer I wondered how it would stack up to Abacus (my English Barley-wine standard). I'm liking this coffee infused version. The barrel doesn't feature as much in this one, but the coffee addition and good taste profile work for me. Looking forward to the regular Mash.
