Notes/Commercial Description:
Join us in excitement as we release the winning brew from our Batch #1000 homebrew contest - Bryeian! Hard to believe that we've brewed 1,000+ batches of beer and for those who have been with us throughout the years, probably surprising to see that the winner is a hoppy ale! A cascadian, dark rye ale to be exact. Brian Pramov and Bryan Keas, a pair of homebrewers from Denver put together this winning recipe for us and it shined brightly in our competition. The roast of the dark malts, the spice of the rye and the intense hop character combine for a fantastic experience.

Bottled 8/8/2013

A - 5 - Quite possible the best looking dark beer I've seen. Pitch black beer with a nice khaki colored head that's super smooth looking, almost like a nitro tap. As it dies down it leaves great lacing and has little peaks and valleys in the head (believe it or not) that make you want to just stare at it for hours.
S - 4 - Pine is the first thing you notice when smelling this beer, followed by the roasted malts and a little bit of grapefruit. Citrus zest. Rye malt.
T - 4.5 - Great tasting beer. Taste is actually a little sweeter than you'd expect with the smell. Grapefruit, pine and orange/nectarine from the hops. Roasted malt and coffee in the background. A bite from the rye malt that keeps the flavor complex and earthy/woody.
M - 4.5 - Nice medium-thick mouthfeel. Alc completely covered. Aftertaste is grapefruit/pine/roasted malts.
O - 4.5 - This is a beer deserving of a better rating than it has IMO. For the price it's debatable whether or not it's worth it. $10 for a 750 ml of what's basically a 7% black IPA. 2 Wookey Jack's for $10 at BevMo is probably a better deal, but it's worth it to try it once!

750 ml capped bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
7% ABV, 08/08/13 etched into the bottle.

A - The giant dollop of mouse-like khaki head takes it's sweet time to reduce to a clumpy pile of foam, all the while leaving heavy sheets of lace on the tulip above the dark black beer.

S - Sharp American hops prick the nose with pine needles and sap-caked pine cone while grapefruit rind pleasantries and a rubbery new tire smell floats amidst the spicy rye and moderately roasted barley malt.

T - Tasting like a hopped-up porter, Bryeian is heavily roasted with notes of chocolate and molasses feeding into the spicy rye malt bill before American hops take over with overtones of pine and subtle citrus notes on the finish.

M - Between the roasted malt astringency and piny hop profile, Bryeian is slightly acrid, leaving the medium-bodied beer finishing quite dry and bitter.

O - The addition of rye malt to a Cascadian Dark Ale is a logical and welcome progression of the relatively new style but, Bryeian doesn't strike me as either the type of beer The Bruery would choose to produce (had they not held the competition) nor one that would win an award out of 200 entries. While Bryeian is a good beer, I find it to be a little overly roasted and underhopped; roasted malts rise above everything else rather than being complimentary but by no means is it a bad offering.

Pours a dark black with some dark khaki tinge and a fluffy off white head with great retention. Smell is rye, malt, and hops, very rich nose. Taste is hoppy and bitter up front with some grains and bread finishing it off leaving a distinct rye flavor on the aftertaste. Taste gets a bit muddy with all the different bitter flavors. Mouth feel is medium bodied, smooth, moderate to high carbonation. Overall, a good dry dark ale, but nothing extraordinary. What this beer has going for it is tons and tons of rye which is great, and where most rye beers unfortunately fail.
