Join us in excitement as we release the winning brew from our Batch #1000 homebrew contest - Bryeian! Hard to believe that we've brewed 1,000+ batches of beer and for those who have been with us throughout the years, probably surprising to see that the winner is a hoppy ale! A cascadian, dark rye ale to be exact. Brian Pramov and Bryan Keas, a pair of homebrewers from Denver put together this winning recipe for us and it shined brightly in our competition. The roast of the dark malts, the spice of the rye and the intense hop character combine for a fantastic experience.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 8/8/2013. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, plum, apricot, raisin, mango, honeydew melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, toffee, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/earthy hops and dark/black/rye/bready malt notes; with big strength. Taste of huge red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, plum, apricot, raisin, mango, honeydew melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, toffee, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery, roast, charred bitterness; and rye spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, plum, apricot, raisin, mango, honeydew melon, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, pine, dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, spicy rye, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, dark bread/crust, light licorice/molasses/toffee, smoke, charcoal, leather, tobacco, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome citrus/fruity/earthy hops and dark/black/rye/bready malt with an awesome hop/char bitter/sweet and rye spiciness balance; with no cloying, acrid, astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/char bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy/sticky/chalky, and fairly resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 7%. Overall this is an awesome black IPA. All around awesome citrus/fruity/earthy hops and dark/black/rye/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/chalky/resinous/drying finish; not overly aggressive. For 6 years old, hops still pack a nice punch! Feels like Columbus/Centennial. Very juicy, dank, earthy hops; with a perfectly balanced rich dark/black/rye malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering hop/char dryness. A really enjoyable offering, and impressively spot on style example as expected.

Man they went from batch 50 to batch 1000 in like 2 years I think. Anyways, this was during the black ipa (don't wanna call it craze) period. Pours black with the consistency and thickness of a black ipa, this shouldn't be confused with a stout or a porter. Sizeable 4/7" off white head, beige. Aroma hit a little bit of everything, the grain bill was noticeable here, wasn't simply a roasted malt, but the hopping was also evident as well.
The rye jumps out here as much as it has in just about any beer. Significant. Ample hopping, what is it Chinook and Simcoe? They're bitter and pronounced, but pair with the roasted rye quite nicely. If black ipas are your thing, this is likely your jam. Carbonation is high but keeps the beer lively and relatively light in comparison to a lot of other dark beers. Lotta stuff going on between pine, rye, mild tobacco and leather. Complex good stuff worth splitting.

A - Pitch black pour with a toffee colored creamy looking head.
S - Light maple, chocolate, cream, spice.
T - Roasted chocolate, smoke, very resiny orange and tangerine, and a lingering citrus/chocolate.
M - Medium velvet-like body, somewhat creamy, slightly lip smacking sticky.
O - This is a really easy drinking beer, even with age on it.

A - Pours a black body, like coffee, with a fluffy light tan two finger head. Great retention to the head and lacing on the glass.
S - Big rye and roasted malt nose. Even after a few years, still a great hop presence on the nose.
T - The taste follows the nose, except there is little hop bite. A bit disappointing, but given the age I expected it.
F - Medium bodied and low carbonation. Really a watery mouthfeel, which is surprising given the plethora of carbonation on the head.
O - I never had this when it was fresh, but I could only assume it has fallen off some. Still solid, from an older black IPA perspective.

If you're into Black IPA's pick this up. Tons of Rye and the hops stand up to it nicely. Darker than I anticipated.. I would like to try this again in a tasting setting... it was pretty late when we cracked this.

I'm bummed that I only purchased one bottle of this elixir. Wow!
I was surprised at the flavors and complexity of this brew. I'm normally not a Black IPA/Rye beer drinker, but this bottle pleased from the first touch on my palate, until it settled into my gullet.
If you can find a bottle, I highly recommend it!

In my opinion, more of a Belgian IPA type of beer than anything else. True to the advice on the bottle, this is definitely one of the hoppier beers from the Bruery but excellent nonetheless.
It looks like something a cross between a black IPA and a double, with a good amount of head foaming on each pour into my snifter.
The overall smell is that of hops with some sugary notes.
Starts out like a nice Belgian before a strong hop presence overtakes the sip. I get some intense Belgian Dubbel tendencies before this careens back towards it's hoppy nature. I found this to be more a slow sipper than usual. Thought some of the black ale characteristics could be confused for extra body given the effervescent mouth feel.
Also would call a bitter Belgian. Enjoyable to drink but I don't think I need many of these.
