Notes/Commercial Description:
Evan Kleiman, host of KCRW's Good Food, was inspired to collaborate with Patrick Rue and The Bruery after enjoying a homemade Rhubarb Raspberry Pie. The rhubarb's fruity sourness tempered with the sweetness of the fresh raspberries and the wheat crust, begged to be bottled up in the form of a bubbly beer. Keeping the original pie recipe in mind, specialty grains were chosen to mimic the crust, and rhubarb and raspberries were used in varying stages of the brewing and fermentation process. The resulting beer is reminiscent of a fresh country pie, cooling on a farmhouse windowsill.

750mL bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours a hazy ruby red color. Minimal white froth.

(S)- Bright yet zesty jammy fruits. Slight dry oak and acidic kick in the background.

(T)- Again, very jammy fruits: raspberry, rhubarb, and strawberry. Slightly dry acidity. Quite tart.

(M)- A good carbonation level and balance. Great fruits and tart acidity to it. Lighter in body but superb fruits all around.

(O)- This is another good sour from the Bruery. Great fruits with a lighter body, but full of tart acidity

A: Murky ruby body with a fizzy tan head that recedes to a small ring around the rim of the glass.

S: Huge sweet raspberries and lactic notes. Notes of baking spices which I'm assuming are from the oak lead to an aroma reminiscent of pie crust. Although that could just be me "buying in" to the target of the beer.

T: Again, sweet raspberries and lactic acidity. Subtle bready notes, bitterness (rhubarb?), and alcohol tingle round out the flavor. Not overly complex, but still flavorful.

M: Thin and tannic with moderate carbonic bite.

O: Nailed what they were aiming for. Not my favorite beer ever, but definitely an interesting beer to have tried.

The beer pours a cloudy and rusty looking amber brown with no head and little carbonation. The nose presents mellow pie fruits forward, mainly cherry/raspberry, and a hint of yeast. The taste brings out tart raspberries followed by a slightly bready/yeasty malt character and abrasively bitter rhubarb. It reminds me of a boozier new glarus, but not quite as sweet as most of their fruited offerings. It's a semi-dry and medium bodied beer, with a chewy and fruity mouthfeel, but is overly boozy, under-carbonated, and lacking the dough/pie crust characteristics I'd hoped for. This beer is good at highlighting the fruit/vegetable adjuncts, but has limited drinkability and could probably use additional cellar time before drinking
