its always weird to me when ipa is both sweet and hoppy, and not like, aromatic hoppy like might work in an amber, but like, harshly bitter hoppy, which is such a clash with the grain, and thats the case here. i was surprised to see this one here in colorado as i thought it was a brewery exclusive. its nowhere near as good as their joe ipa i dont think, but maybe thats just my palate. a ton of crystal malt sweetness, some light fruitiness in the middle, almost peachy for a second, then the hops come in all bitter to close it out, but there is still leftover sugar there on the back end too. its busy and messy i think, although i am enjoying it on a chilly evening, which helps its cause. weirdly boozy too for its abv, smooth in feel though even still, lots of body on it. the hop profile is nice, but there is too much bitter. maybe simcoe and amarillo, maybe even centennial, its hard to say, but it has a nice mix of fruity bright tropical and woody dankness. not my favorite of their beers, but i was happy to drink through one of them just the same.

edit: just had this on tap at the portland brewery and its absolute delicious, a totally different animal than the beer i reviewed here in denver. its dramatically different, juicier, fresher, way less sweet than i remember, and just a tip top ipa overall. i am bumping up some scores to reflect the perfect specimen at the brewery. i didnt find too much bitterness at all. i think it might not hold up super well, or got warm or something in transit to this market, but fresh at the brewery it was sensational!

Sampler pack from Winco. Dark golden pour, foamy head. Aroma features light hops which become more potent in the taste, bold and sharp. Big hoppy tadte from this IPA.

Three 12oz bottles from an assortment pack purchased at Total Wine in Lynnwood, Washington.
Bottles are dated 07/OCT/19. Served in a pint glass.

Look- Slightly hazy, gorgeous dark gold color. Fluffy off-white head that has plenty of retention. decent amount of lacing.
Moderate amount of carbonation visible in the glass.

Smell- Citrus (tangerine, mandarin orange, grapefruit, lemon), pineapple, pine, bready malt, grass and light floral hop accents.

Taste- Pine, citrus (see smell), light pineapple, citrus pith, grass, a decent dose of bready malt, pretty bitter.

Feel- Light to medium bodied, fairly crisp, semi-dry, gritty bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden.

O- A pretty old school west coast style IPA. Not an IPA for every palette, but if you like bitter pine it is right up your alley.

Side note- My bottles had this beer at 8% ABV, not the 7.6% listed in the description.

Poured from can into a pint glass
Appearance - The beer pours a dark golden color with a one finger head of very fizzy foam. The head has a decent level of retention, fading over time to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell - The aroma of the brew is strongest of a tropical fruit smell, with lots of tangerine, mango, and pineapple. Along with these smells comes some lighter grass and hay with a little bit of dough and pine.
Taste - The taste begins with the sweet tropical fruit flavors that were detected in the nose, with a big tangerine and mango taste mixed with a whole lot of grapefruit hop. These flavors are a base taste and remain strong throughout, but are joined by some flavors of pine and grass as the taste advances. At the end, some flavors of yeast and spice of some nutmeg and clove come to the tongue and with a bit more grapefruit hop and some more sweetness, one is left with a sweeter and robust taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel- The body of the brew is medium in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side. For the sweet tropical fruit tastes and nice hop blend the feel is great and allows for all the rich flavors to be sensed, all while still keeping it very easy drinking.
Overall - A very tasty brew with lots of tropical fruit, citrus hop, and nice blend of other flavors of spice and hop.

Nice looking pour. It's golden amber, a finger or two of dense head with good retention. You get a blast of pine, then comes citrus background. Assertive bittnerness, not harsh. The beer has a nice solid malt profile, more forward than a lot of its West Coast IPA brethren. Good carbonation. At close to 8% ABV, it carries it well, so watch out.

Picked up a 6-pack of cans out of pure curiosity. At 8% alcohol, it could be classified as an Imperial IPA, and if they had, I'd be none the wiser. There is a slight heaviness and sweetness in the feel that is Imperial-esque, but maybe not as sweet overall (as an Imperial). What pleased me most was the malt and lack of citrus/fruit in the aroma. There are hints, but this isn't a citrus-forward IPA, which is right down my alley. The hops are well balanced/nestled on the pallet, unlike many IPAs, like 10 Barrel's Joe IPA, which is way too hoppy for me. This is a very enjoyable, slightly heavy IPA. I will have a 2nd as soon as I'm done with this one! CHEERS!
