Stopped in at Brewer's Haven tonight on the way home from work and stumbled onto this new beer.. Paid $4ish...

Label says "Spring Release Hop Rye'It IPA: We like Rye - you like IPA, so we met in the middle and brewed up Hop Rye'It. Flaked and malted Rye give this beer a full mouthfeel and slight spice while generous amounts of dry hopped Crystal finish the beer on a floral note. 'A damn good beer' "

Poured into my slim tulip... 1 finger off-white head atop a slightly hazed orange brew.

Nose is fresh and clean hoppiness .. definite floral notes and a bit of citrus... maybe even some citrus blossom... rye malts are pretty heavy.. crispy with a light toast.

Nice bitterness up front.. pale malt and some dry toast mid palate add just enough sweetness to really make the floral note shine.. background citrus hoppiness... long lingering flowery hops on the finish... very long and fresh.

Body is definitely thicker than a standard IPA... also more "slippery" if that is a good descriptor.. sorta thick, but melts away quickly... interesting... and odd. Very nice.

All 4's... I would go into the .25 increments, but haven't figured it out how to make it jive with my other reviews. :-)

I'm amazed in the sudden influx of rye beers around here. No seriously, there haven't been many local examples lately.

Pours a beautiful amber color with a touch of gold and a one-finger head into my glass. It's clear and refined.

Sweet, lightly spiced rye greets the nose followed by a subdued note of crystal. Reminds me of the several rye beers I used to homebrew.

This one is more on the rye side with just a touch of pine to accentuate the spice. Very easy-drinking.

Finishes with a good dollop of spice. Hard to describe otherwise.

Very nice. The carbonation could be turned down a bit but otherwise, you've got a great rye ipa here just begging for one who savors rye to enjoy it!

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium coppery amber with a thin off-white head with good retention and slippery lacing. Aroma of citrus hops and sweet malt, hints of pineapple. Flavor follows with bright citrus hops, sweet malt and lots of citrus and citrus rind; orange and grapefruit. A very light rye sourness that blends nicely with the citrus notes. Medium bodied with a hint of creaminess. A rather unusual and fun to drink rye beer that has nice IPA influence. Nicely done.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium orange hue with a light haze and a subtle effervescence. Head is a thick finger of frothy ivory foam with a bit of an orange cast. Head retention seems pretty good! I like it.

Smell: sweet malt with plenty of caramel character and a hint of rye spiciness. Hops don't jump out at me but are resiny, if anything, in character. Despite its sweetness, this beer seems nicely balanced to me.

Taste: sweet and caramelly with a spicy, prickly character. This reminds me a bit of a strong ale, but pared back a bit. I like it OK, but really it's a little bit messy.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and somewhat effervescent mouthfeel. Not creamy, but that's not what this style demands, anyway.

Overall: I'm glad I've had this beer, but it doesn't grab my imagination. It just seems a little over-done, maybe. I think rye IPA is a concept that still needs to mature, much like the black IPA. I will probably not reach for another one of these, but if you are interested in the latest developments in the world of rye, this is certainly worth a try.

22oz from Fred Meyer in N.Salem. $3.69 Pours a nice dark orange( darker then the usual IPA) colour with a good sized creamy off white head. Fresh piney citric hop aromas..some caramel malt but getting no rye. Again the flavour is good piney/pineapple/grapefruit hops with a smooth caramel backbone..there is maybe a good touch of the rye in the end taste. Nice on the tongue smooth yet complex. Nice IPA but not much rye on show

12oz : tulip

Amber red, with a thick, foamy white head that dissipates fairly quickly and leaves some lacing.

Big citric hop profile in the nose. Faint rye backing. Quite inviting.

The taste is pleasant, citric hops, with more of a balanced caramel and rye balance.

Medium+ body with average carbonation.

A well done, hop-forward rye beer. And while the taste was still enjoyable, it was just not quite as hoppy/flavorful as the nose led me to expect.

22oz bottle poured into a large mug. Can't find any dates on the bottle.

Pours slightly cloudy golden color, huge fluffy head, fades slowly, leaves webby lacing. Plenty of carbonation crawling up through the beer. Smell is muted, but pretty. Nice hop profile, floral and spicy.

Taste is rye spicy, honey sweetness, little of the hops that show up in the aroma. A bit too sweet, but not offputting.

Mouthfeel is thick and sticky. Overall, not bad.

22oz bomber into my Jackie O's tulip.

A: Darker golden colors belies the rye malt base of this beer; excellent lacing from an off-white head.

S: Big floral hop component with a noticeable constant citrus hop undertone. Lots of rye maltiness, fresh toast, possibly caramel as well.

T: Smooth malt base of noticeable rye supports a prominent fresh floral hop character, citrus, orange...light amounts of spices. Moderate bitterness; grapefruit rind? Very nice, it begins balanced and finishes with big floral hops and citrus blossoms.

MF: Creamy-ish medium body, bitter but not too dry mouthfeel.

O: Really nice rye IPA. The hops are very fresh and floral, the rye is well integrated with the malt without seeming overly 'bready'. To me, this is more of an IPA than a straight up Rye Beer.
