Passing through Bend, OR for only two days, it was hard to refuse going to the Deschutes brewpub for a second time, however after spending some time at 10 Barrel, I am glad I did. 10 Barrel is in my view an ideal local brewpub. I tried the apocalypse IPA and the sinister black, and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor of both. The service here is quick, especially if you don't mind sharing a table with a friendly stranger. The food is above average for a brewpub, and was reasonably priced. After a long day of mountain biking or skiiing in the forests, this is the place to be for hearty food and great ales.

This was stop #29 for my wife and I on a 21-day pub-crawl from Michigan to N. CA and OR. We stopped here on a Monday afternoon to enjoy their beers and to have dinner. The pub is located in a stand-alone, rustic-looking building along a busy commercial street with a residential area to the rear. A beer garden with a fireplace is located next to the entrance, and inside is what we felt is a near-perfect arrangement for a brewpub setting. A garage door that opens to the beer garden was a nice touch (until the sun started setting and a cool breeze was felt where we were sitting).

We ordered a 10-beer sampler (14 were available) to have with our food. We later got curious to try the two sours that were on the beer menu, so we added them (and we were glad that we did). Each of the beers was brewed very well to style, and some had characteristics that went beyond the style definitions, so that the overall grade was a B minus. The Paramount Strong Pale Ale was the most notable. Our dinner was equally as good.

We really enjoyed our experience and would enjoy returning to this brewpub.
