On the heels of the XXIV and Boneyard sampler. You know, we’ll need to leave Bend at some point, just not yet, certainly not before lunch has been had. Navigated out fairly easily now that I’ve come to understand I Phone maps (I’ve been riding shotgun for 5 days now), call Portland, we’re gonna be late…

Low vertical plank wood house looking thing. We parked lotside, and opted for inside as it is, kind of, unpleasantly warm outside. Pushed past the crowd and set up at the end of the bar; gray bumpy concrete topped, panel front, piping foot rail, & seating for 9 on hightop steel frame wood backed chairs. 10 stand up individual bending handles (9 + a nitro) on the bar, a large handle affixed to the cold room wall on the end, aaand, today’s cask (‘cause Wednesday is cask day) on the bar next to the taps.

The barback is light counter space with some fuckin’ guy looking at me (I am most handsome), because it’s actually far side seating (below a pair of garage doors open there) for about a half dozen; 3 to each side of a center post. Corner shelving holds booze below growlers and shirts for sale, flatscreens on all walls, and drop pork pie hat lamps over the bar.

3 raised wood roundies adjacent to the bar, and then the main room; slab concrete floorings, and beige walls with a wood trim & ceiling with sound reducing boards for who’s kidding who? And into the main room, with its prep space up front & full kitchenings behind it. And seating; 3 picnic tables on the inside wall below a large horizontal blackboard listing tap selections with tap selections color chalked, 5 picnics on the far wall (some of them up against the roll up garage doors), and a raised banquet hall table for the share of a dozen plus down the center of the room. And one more picnic to the rear hugging the cold room; glass fronted with kegs, wood barrels racked, & 22’s.

4 tables outside to the rear of the bar in a space penned by alt vertical wood fencing of various heights, and 8 tables around the side running a ‘U’ around a fire pit stove with brickplay, umbrellas, & strung lighting.

Sampler of 10 (which was everything but their nitro & cask offering) on a steel stave type piece; slotted & numbered (“Mike Saw a Sasquatch” Session Ale, 4.7%, a Summer ale with a bit of honey, very easy drinking; ISA. 5.5%, their ‘India Session Ale’, dry hopped citrus, grapefruit, and floral; Apocalypse IPA, 6.8%, northwest style IPA, fruity, pine resiny, Horizon, Centennial, Amarillo, & Cascade; S1nist0r Black Ale, 5.4%, light body, and a bit of roast; Oregon Brown Ale, 6.7%, one hoppy fucking brown ale, pine & citrus; Jean Claude Van Strawberry, 6.2%, Belgian Golden, strawberry & Belgian spiciness; Smokestack Brown Porter, 5.2%, chocolatey roasty; The Blueprint Kolsch, 5.4%, a clean, easy drinking Kolsch; Double Barrel Northwest Red, 6.7%, a big sweety, citrusy, fruity, hoppy; Cynical, 8%, a Cascadian dark ale, Magnum, Chinook, & Cascade, a nice goddamn black IPA, say it! BLACK IPA!)

And what I meant by “Can I get a shorty of the (nitro) Oatmeal Stout?” was “Not a pint, please”, but I won’t embarrass the East by cowering, no. So, I’ve got a pint of the Oatmeal Stout, 5%, wow, it’s of the good; oaty, roasty, & smoooth. The only thing I didn’t get to try was the cask ISA. Beers in general were very good. Mike-Saw-A-Sasquatch, India Session Ale, Apocalypse IPA, Oregon Brown Ale, Cynical, & the nitro Oyster Stout were the best of ‘em.

And the aforementioned lunch. We split the sesame chicken lettuce wraps (sesame & sweet chili marinaded chicken, red cabbage slaw, ground pistachio, chopped cilantro & mint, sesame, soy vinaigrette, and unmanageable, wild & unruly fried rice noodles). The surprise was that they were ‘all assembly required’, as in, “here’s a lettuce shell, make your own goddamn lettuce wraps!” Interesting. Who knew iceberg lettuce held so sturdy. Very tasty, and then I took in the seared tiger prawn salad (mixed greens, mandarin oranges, snow peas, red onions, sesame soy ginger vinaigrette, with wonton noodles). Excellent salad, something in there was delivering some serious heat).

They don’t brew here, but do somewhere nearby. And then they, you know, bring it here. Service was accommodating as things they go. Cool, comfortable house (literally). Food was real good (gone fixed my head), and the beers were very much so up to snuff. I could have another, but we need to move if we’ve ever going to leave Bend…

Beers here are ok ... just ok. The atmosphere is kind of letdown. It feels more like a family restaurant in here than a place to get a good beer. I tried a pizza here and it looked awesome but tasted just ok. WIth places like Crux around, I can't think of any reason to stop here. Especially now that they sold out to AB-Inbev.
