Wax top bomber bottled on 08/09/13. Purchased at Brown's in Stillwater, OK on 09/07/13 - the the last bottle in the store! Never got notification of this bottling...strange. Pours dark turbid cola red with a thin brown cap and scant lace.

I like the aroma here - big malt, big toast, and big bourbon, and smooth vanilla.

The flavor is nearly overcome by the booze from the bourbon, but the super big sweet malt bill and vanilla added by the oak barrels are enough to keep the peace. Just teetering on the edge of too much booze, but I still like it.

Feels silky and milky due to the lower carb.

I would not call this beer balanced. I would call it enjoyable and unique. It's a limited one-off, but would like to have it aged if I find it again.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep red. Small off white head. Thin collar and some wisps.

Smell - Bourbon, but not too hot. Vanilla. Caramel malt. Hint of hops.

Taste - Bourbon is much stronger. Lots of liquor flavor. Deep caramel and a slight grassy hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Not hot. Medium body. Moderate bitterness.

Overall - I was skeptical but it's tasty.

Pours a super-effervescent chestnut with 2 fingers of tan head. Fantastic lacing & head retention with lovely viscosity to this

S: Some vanilla & butterscotch notes & other Bourbon notes

T: Much oakyness/dryness with faint bourbon & butterscotch up front. Vanilla, oaky dryness & booze as this warms

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, too much actually

Rough edges are still present, if you like them with a lot of Bourbon, but not much malt depth , this beer is for you. Not totally in my wheelhouse, but I like what they were shooting for here. Just not the sum of it's parts. Keep shooting for the moon Marshall! I will age my other bottle for a least a year. A sipper as it is now...

P: Dark mahogany body with a dollop of cappuccino froth.

S: Bourbon is definitely the star here. Toasted coconut, vanilla, and toasted oak.

T/M: Roasted barley, bitter cocoa, oak soaked bourbon, light roast coffee and rolled oats. Prickly carbonation in a medium-full body. Finishes bitter and slightly chalky.

O: The bourbon complements nicely and isn't overpowering. A great way to celebrate a 5 year anniversary.

5th Anniversary Ale!
Bottled 8/09/13~Released 8/20/13
Imperial Red aged in Elijah Craig Barrels
Red Wax Dipped Bomber->Cigar City Snifter
///
A ~ Dark dark dark red like I expected from an Imperial Red that had rested in flavorful Bourbon barrels for months. Opaque.

S ~ Overdone (burnt) caramel, dark breads, prunes, & good ol' American Bourbon-soaked-oak, albeit more subdued than I expected, but I dig it..

T ~ Nice deep caramel flavors w/ a great deal of toasted bread & a hint of ash on the finish akin to drinking a stiff chickory french press. Nice & hoppy as well. The bourbon rounds out any hint of alcohol & covers up that subtle ash/roast flavor w/ finesse.

M ~ Husky & Toasty that layer of roasty ash on the finish that is quickly masked by the barrel treatment. Dry from the Oak, but the barrel does not outshine the hops in this beer. Pleasantly surprised. Carbonation is cask-like & wonderful.

D ~ Imperial Red Ales usually turn me off immediately because I'm not fond of most brewers interpretation of the substyle.
Marshall completely took their own twist on the style that I've never seen before. I'm very fond of Elijah Craig aged beers so this only helps.
Check this one out, ESPECIALLY if you live in OK,
& cheers to Marshall for providing a consistent
supply of great beer for 5 years!

Prost.

Pours an almost opaque reddish brown with a thin tan head. Smells of vanilla bean and some cherry. A bit of wood in the aroma as well. Taste begins with some maple syrup, then some hearty bread, followed by some tart cherries, and finishes with a clean bourbon. The aftertaste has some vanilla in it. Mouthfeel is rich. Overall an excellent beer, a nice choice for their 5th anniversary.
