BBD: 03.04.13, Kvass #15.
Last bottle from Endy's Deli, they are phasing out their Kvass selection.

This is the third Monastyrskiy brand I've had this week, wasn't really looking forward to this one as the black currant one was terrible. Surprisingly this one was a 180 from that one.

Opened the bottle with a loud hiss of co2 and honey aroma wafting out immediately. Poured into a large mug, it actually had lots of carbonation at first with a couple inches of momentary foam that dissipated as soon as it was poured. Tiny rye bread crumb particles in the bottom of the glass.

Big honey aroma, seemingly natural like honeycomb, plus some of the usual tootsie roll sweet malt and a vague mustiness as well.

The taste has a lingering honey taste, slightly sweet with a bit more citric acid than other kvass, which lessens the sweetness a bit. Tart berry, sweet tootsie roll, clover honey aftertaste. Overall it's pleasant to drink, still commercial, but not as sweet and one note as the others somehow. Not sure if its an older bottle or if it just has more citric acid added to this variety, but it was enjoyable.

Served in a Gale Sayers shaker pint glass.

And the Original Kvass Kick rolls on once again, home-slices! This stuff pours a clear sunrise garnet topped by a finger of short-lived glowing off-white foam. The nose comprises perfume, sweet flowers, faint honey, and even fainter dried maple syrup. ...The hell? The taste is a decidedly sweet cacophony of maple syrup, fennel, honey, and perfume (well, it tastes as sweetly as it smells, anyway). Something doesn't sit right with me here, as most of these Monastyrskiy bottles contain some rather sweet concoctions, but this one just comes across as too sweet, too artificially sweet. The bready character inherent in the style is nowhere to be found. I dunno. The body is a light medium, with a moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, this is a limp kvass right here, one that opts for over-the-top sweetness rather than anything close to complexity or even breadiness.

Had to start opening these to try them. I gave this one a pour and it came out as the traditional orange brown color with a fizzy head on top. The head fades completely along with any type of lacing as well. The smell of this to me smell a hell of a lot like chocolate, It reminds me specifically of the Hershey Chocolate factory tour. The smell is obviously sweet with honey as well. It smells really nice. The taste of this beer is also a nice blend of Chocolate and Honey. There is a subtle cherry flavor I'm picking up in there as well. There isn't much of a bread or spice quality to this one. The mouthfeel is much like a soda, thin and carbonated. Overall it's actually a good drink on it's own. For a Kvass it strays from the path a little but still pretty good.
