On tap at the Adelaide Holiday Inn. Nice bar, comfy couches, positively lousy beer.

Appearance: Head retention poor, lagery yellow colour, sticky chemicalish lacing. Doesn't look much chop next to the Cooper's pale ale beside it.

Smell: Nothing really, maybe a bit lemony (?!). Adjunct smell, faint. Not the worst I've ever had, but pretty banal.

Taste: Refreshing, not much depth but not too much of a chemical taste. A bit of adjunctivity on the palate. Not the best, and a fair way below average. Later notes: It feels a bit hairy, like it's about to come back up. Unflattering.

Mouthfeel: Thin but effervescent. Like any other comparable macro lager. Why am I reviewing this?!

Drinkability: Could get boring, but good on a hot night. It's not very hot tonight.

Notes: Rather regurgible. Don't bother.

Of the two main South Australian tap "pub" beers, this is the marginal better.

Neither are very good. Actually, that is a little unfair. Both have been consistent sellers in SA for at least 40 of the years I have been stalking this planet, and probably much longer than that and neither show any sign of vanishing.

They are obviously what the market wants and is willing to pay for but I don't know why.

However, there is very little to distinguish one from the other, and arguing which is better is like trying to choose between Holden and Ford. For this reason, the rest of this review is a cut and paste of my review for West End's main competitor...

The beer's appearance is actually quite good. It pours well, forms a nice white head which dissipates fairly quickly and is a rich golden yellow. From the tap, it is a good solid workingmans beer.

It is when you drink it that you start to notice all is not well in Oz...

Taste is ok, if somewhat bland. There is a somewhat pleasant nuttiness to it, but it is well hidden by the other, less pleasant characters of the beer.

However, this beer has an aftertaste that only gets worse as the beer warms up. If you love your children, DO NOT LET THIS BEER WARM UP! Drink it while it is still frosty and slippery.

Mouthfeel is also temperature related. As it warms up, it just feels wrong in your mouth. I suspect this is why the people I grew up with drink so much of it. It starts to feel bad, so they pour it down and get another one. Lusting after the new beer feel...?

Smell is quite non-descript. Imagine you in a garden and you see a big red rose. You bend down to sniff it, and realise there is no smell. Not quite the situation here, but the disappoint is the same.

If you are in South Australia, and you want to drink what the locals drink this is one of the two big ones. The other is marginally worse. If you MUST drink it though, buy it by the schooner, don't buy too many schooners, and finish them quickly.

You have been warned.

Pours a pale amber with steady light bead and not much head, more of a film than a head. Clean in body. Lacing is speckled and thin. Pretty blah, even for what it be.

Nose not too bad. Quite floral with green apple on the air, hints of some light malt and a slight phenolic character. Lagery, pretty plain yet with a lot more character than I was expecting. Good effort, but still pretty simple.

Taste is a letdown. Nothing on the front, just watery, then hints of green vegetables on the mid with minimal malt character, becomes bitter and a bit bready on the mid with metallic hops and an acerbic hint. Dissipates in a carbolic finish, then that cloying bready character returns on the aftertaste. There is a slight citrus tang midway through which adds some flavour, but it's not enough. Not a pleasant or interesting drop.

Mouthfeel actually feels like there's a body there. Unfortunately the texture is very harsh and has trouble going down.

Not too bad as far as Aus lagers go, but still a struggle to finish.

this may be a traditional south aussie brew, which surprisingly is one that CUB havent bought out over the years. its a lion nathan brew ( they own tooheys), and alas its more in keeping with their lower rungs on the brewing ladder.

nothing much to say here other than boring boring boring. if you lined this up with all other traditional aussie state lagers, in apperance you wouldnt know the difference. is a little more bitter in flavor than others except XXXX, but is leaning toward midstrength level which cancels out any good in that area. as with all other aussie standard lagers, its the crappy adjuncts which jump out at you. all this does is make you pine for a decent beer.

south autralia have always been pushing to be the best at something in this country and for the most part come up short. they have managed a few cricket titles, won a couple in football and ok in basketball they have done real well (but in australia that hardly constitutes bragging rights). with this beer they have never been better than fourth or fifth on the list of bad lagers, even when it was brewed at a higher level than now. that just says bad bad bad. and considering they have coopers in the neighbourhood, it only makes this lot look a whole lot worse. at least they got my boy lleyton hewitt. hopefully you wont find him ever drinking this.
