This restaurant, located in an old church, is divided into half ... a Bistro and a Dining Room.
The Bistro, which is where the S-Shaped bar is located, has approximately 12 beers on tap. With the exception of Guiness, all remaining beers are micro/crafts. My recent visit saw Captain Lawrence Pale Ale, Middle Ages Wailing Wench, Hebrew Rye IPA and Bluepoint Toasted Lager.
The Bistro menu offers Tapas, Appetizers and reasonably priced entrees.
I have enjoyed coming here; however, I can not say anything good about the service. On two completely separate occasions, I've had horrible experiences with getting my food from the kitchen. While the front of the house staff is nice, they have had to deal with screw-ups from the kitchen each time I was present... and both times were with my order.
This is of course a Beer Review, but since the Beer is in a restaurant and readers thinking of going will undoubtedly order food, I feel saying this is justified.
I'll give Terrapin a 3rd try at some point, but it won't be in the near future.
UPDATE: I've returned a few times and haven't had food issues. The bartending staff continues to be excellent, and I must go out of my way to compliment the Bar Manager, Chris, for his excellent beer selection. As such, I've updated my Service review rating.

I have been there many times and never disapointed.
Its a great place to go if you're looking for an ever changeing selection of great beers. The service staff is knowledgeable and just as passionate about what they serve as we are about what we eat and drink.
There is a great relationship between them and local farms and breweries.
Currently on Tuesdays there is a "Battle of Breweries" going on, you get a pre selected menu and beer pairings and vote on your favorite brews. Last night was Brooklyn vs Blue Point, how does one choose between these two giants of flavor and creativity?
The Blue Point Toasted Lager and White IPA are way up on the flavor scale (I don't usually care for lagers but the toasted is quite drinkable and stands up well.)
Brooklyn's Lager and Sorachi Ace were very good, and choices were difficult at this point.
Then came the Brooklyn Black Ops! Its like their secret weapon, usually poured "under the table" it clears the memory of anything previous! How do you describe it? Its simple if you see it taste it.

When walking in you have the choice of two sides of the restaurant - the more formal dining room or the more casual bar / pub area. Menus for both sides are posted on the wall for review. Since there was a long wait for the pub side, and there was a table available in the dining room we ate there.
The pub side has the bar which takes up about half the room. There are a few tables. The dining room is a nice space with huge ceilings and modern decor. This is what a nice upscale restaurant should feel like.
There were good beers available on draft and bottle here. On draft they had both Brooklyn Oktoberfest and Companion, local Keegan's Milk Stout, Outrage IPA, Bengali Tiger, Ommegang Abbey Ale, and Toasted Lager. Bottles covered other beers from the breweries that had draft selections along with Captian Lawrence, Ithaca, DFH, Rogue, Chimay, and Full Sail. Some macros are also available. The beers I had on draft were very fresh and served at proper tempuratures.
The food was outstanding here. Focus on local seasonal food and covering several styles. I had a wonderful venison with goat cheese polenta, and others at the table had a great pumpkin ravioli, and gnocchi with truffles. We sampled several tapas which were a bit small but very good. Desserts were also top notch, especially the molten chocolate and apple tart desserts.
Overall the food prices were a not that high for the quality of food you are getting, and I found the drafts to be somewhat reasonably priced. Service was very good, nicely professional and the waitress knew the beers when I asked questions about them.
Overall this has become a must stop for me when I am in the area. Next time I would like to try the casual pub side for comparison.

Went here on 10/15/2010 for dinner in the dining room.
The atmosphere of this place is really nice, the high open ceilings are really inviting, the lighting was dim but good, everything was orderly and clean and everything meshed very well.
The service was excellent. It was prompt, friendly, and informative. Our waitress knew everything they had on tap and bottle by memory and knew about the beer as well. She even drove out to Brown's in Troy to get a keg of their Cherry-Raspberry Ale so they could have it on tap. That is service alright.
The beer selection was really good. It highlighted the region's craft beers (which is something many places can't do) with a few hard to find Keegan Ales, Southern Tiers, and even a tap from Brown's. The bottles were just as impressive and even added some industry standards with Dogfish Head and Chimay. Really nice selection at reasonable prices for these quality beers.
The food was excellent as well, a bit pricey but that's what you get when you get high quality food. All the menu items looked excellent, and the ones we settled on were well worth it.
Overall a decent value to this place. It is a high quality restaurant/bar with excellent beer choices and it is run by people who know what they are doing. I will definitely be going back when I get the chance.

There are two sides or Terrapin, The Resuruant and the Red Bistro. This review is based on the Red Bisto, the more casual side of Terrapin.
The atmosphere is pure gasto pub. On tap are about 10 beers, mostly NY based brewers, some slots or other micro or imported beers. Also carry about another 20 beers on bottle. Good selection and the price for beer is reasonable.
I have been here a few times and service was prompt and freindly.
The food here is very good, never been disappointed by anything I have ordered.
Overall a nice place to eat and drink.

Let my inspiration flow... Just a simple review of a good, simple meal and beverage on the bistro side of Terrapin. I had Joe Mama's Milk Stout on draft (a good stout from Keegan Ales, brewed with coffee) and loved it. Lots of other good selections on tap and in bottles. Many of their selections are local brews: Ithaca, Keegan Ales, Southern Tier, Blue Point. Very good food selection as well. They have a "tapas" menu for people who like to pick and choose small portions of different things.

A: Housed in an old church (at least that's what it appears to be), it's kind of an eclectic aura when you first walk into the place, with a yuppy-ish looking bar to the left, and a main dining area around the corner to the right. On the dark side, with lowlights and candles everywhere, kind of loud, and chock full of yuppies and yuppy wannabe's, but in all fairness, we did meet a handful of down-to-earth locals at the bar who were into good beer and real ale.
Q/SEL: The beer selection was designed to feature NY state beers (which was great for a guy coming from NJ), but it did offer other domestic micros and imports, both on draft and in bottle, as well. While the selection may not have rivaled that of other beer bars, they certainly made up for it in the quality category. The impression that I received was that the ownership, as hinted by the beer menu focus, goes out of its way to maintain a good relationship with Empire State brewers, hence giving it enviable access to to the state's rarer beer offerings. For example, Keegan's suddenly famous (and deservedly so) Joe Mama's Milk Stout was on tap, as were some Southern Tier, Ommegang, Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve, etc offerings...next to Delirium Noel and some other Belgian seasonal imports. Needless to say, we were nice and happily warmed up before heading off to our dinner destination.
SRV: The service was fantastic; attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. The gentleman behind the bar offered his own review of every beer we ordered, and didn't shy away from constructive criticism. That guy alone will have us coming back for more.
F: N/a...the dining area seemed too shi-shi and yuppy, so we decided to hit the old-school comfort food place across the street for their reknown London Broil sandwiches (and the food certainly lived up to the reputation, fyi).
We will certainly be returning to this fine establishment, and next time we'll try to stay for dinner :)

Ooooh, years ago, I think during the Kingston reroute maybe. Hopped across the river one night to see what goes on in sleepy Rhinebeck, hitting first the vintage apothecary turned ice cream shoppe/bar Schemmy's and then drinks afterwards at Terrapin. The latter an easy find, housed in the old First Baptist Church on the corner, across the street from where they show them great indie films on 9 something. Some years later now, coming due west through Connecticut on the heels of finding that brewpub in Torrington not brewing, I've got a little time before later and know where I can grab a beer and a bite...
The big old church congregation dining side done in earthy prairie colors, waffle backed seating, large chandeliers, and tall narrowed arched mirrored walls. Smaller, tighter bistro side, with a backwards "S" shaped shiny topped bar with a phat phootrail seating about a dozen and a half, nicely candle lit with these cool pin cushiony holey holders. An open kitchen area behind the bar to the rear, and along the side, a large wooden arch with burnished copper panels over the barback & smaller arches to both sides with a shimmery backdrop that look like "raining"; tiered booze below each of them, and a bit more in the center, shelved and displayed.
Good things with light and décor. Earthy colors, something grayish & burnt sienna walls, with tall curtained windows, hard wood planked floors, and a vaulted ceiling with spinning fans & baby spots from the crossbeam rafters. Artwork, pieces flowers & wines, and a totem polesque sculpture on a raised platform of sorts just inside the door. Coneish folded paper wall mounted lamps, like them things frites come in, and drop cone lighting tracing above the bar. 18 or so square & circular tables, some sharing common yellow & green retro couches, others in little nook and crannies. A very comfortable, cozy room. Cally says "There's only 1 TV and I don't have to look at it from where I'm sitting". Ah, poems and a girl with hives that turn redder after Paulaner, she's quite silly. Good tunes, some Jazz & a little tangled up in Dylan.
10 taps across 2 towers of 5 apiece at different places along the bar, they feature of variety of beers from New York state (Ommegang Rare Vos, Ithaca Cascazilla, Captain Lawrence Double IPA, Brooklyn Blunderbuss, Keegans 4 Philosophers, Blue Point Toasted Lager, Middle Ages Wailing Wench) and a couple of, yeah (Guinness, Amstel Light & Blue Moon).
And about 3 dozen bottles. Nearly ½ of them NY state (Ommegang Abbey, Hennepin, Chocolate Indulgence & 3 Philosophers, Brooklyn Local 1, Lager & Brown Ale, Captain Lawrence Nor' Easter & Extra Gold, Ithaca White Gold & 10, Southern Tier Oatmeal Stout & Gemini, Blue Point Blueberry Ale, Keegans Mother's Milk, Doc's Cider), and the other ½ not, being a mix of some micros (DogFishHead 90 Minute IPA, Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, Magic Hat #9, Troegs Nugget Nectar, Stone Double Bastard, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Schlafly Imperial Stout), some decent imports (Chimay, Duvel, Fullers London Pride, Unibroue La Fin Du Monde & Maudite, Paulaner Hefe), and some big brewery stuff.
Beer menu is broken out to distinguish first the New York state drafts & bottles, and then the domestic and imported drafts & bottles, and then about 20 wines, and cocktails too. Appropriate glassware all around. Staff knows their game. Amy let me taste the Keegans 4 Philosophers, which I will most certainly decline, thank you, I'll have another Cascazilla.
Oh, and foodings. I app'd with the grilled free range chicken skewers, most excellent, served in a peanut satay sauce, and thems were some healthy skewers, and then the New Mexican green chili stew; a sturdy pork posole finished with crispy tortilla strips & crème fresh, real tasty, and it had some good heat. Definitely not a pub grub menu, they do aps, salads, soups, pastas, nearly a half dozen quesadilla choices, upwards of a dozen tapas items and some "create a sandwich" action. They play organic, champion local produce and meat where they can, and are all about sustainable agriculture, Vegan friendly too.
Beerwise, they've stepped up their game considerably since I was here years back, when they only had ½ the number of taps and bottles and weren't nearly as New York statecentric. The food is excellent and they give you generous portions, and the place has a great vibe. The perfect choice for all of it if you're on that side of the river that far up, or just go make the trek. Some rise, some fall, some climb, to get to Terrapin.

Bistro Red is adjacent to the larger, more expensive Terrapin. Red is more of a an upscale bar in terms of food, price, atmosphere, etc. to the more formal Terrapin. All beer selections available at Red are available at Terrapin, since they essentially share the same bar.
The atmosphere is wide open, with about 12 tables and a large curving bar. High ceilings and a semi-open kitchen overlooks the bar.
There are 10 beers on draft, with 5 always being dedicated to NY craft beer. Captain Lawrence, Southern Tier, Blue Point, Kelso, Sixpoint, Brooklyn, Keegan, Chatam, Middle Ages among others are usually well represented. The other taps include more run of the mill/macro items. All NY taps are $6 per pint, which I find a bit pricey for the area, but the quality and freshness are always there. They make up for this in the bottle selection dept. though. $12 for a bottle of Southern Tier Chokolat is a great deal in my book. Other bottled selections are also fairly reasonably priced. NY brewers are also well represented on the rather small bottle list. They recently introduced a 750ml series list, which included Brooklyn Local 1 and Southampton Biere De Garde as of my last visit. In all, a very nice and concise beer list when it comes to NY craft beers. They also hold beer dinners on occasion at their catering offshoot in Staatsburg. I have yet to attend one of these dinners, but I have been told good things.
The food is well above average pub fare, if you can even call it that. There is a great build you own sandwich option that lets you pick your bread, toppings, and a main item with choices that include Coleman beef, chicken, Ahi Tuna Salad, and Duck Confit among others. They also feature great quesadillas and pasta plates. Some very nice food at pretty reasonable prices.
This worth checking out if you are in the area, esp. if you are out of town and would like a great introduction to some great NY brews.
