On tap at Blue Frog Grog & Grill on 7/18/09. This is a seasonal described as a blend of their DIPA, IPA and red ale.
A - Slightly hazy amber/orange body with reddish hues, lively carbonation and almost one finger's width of creamy beige head that settled into a quarter inch of retention and thin, bubbly lacing.
S - Malt-forward aroma with dark caramel and toasted grains. Hop presence is fairly subdued overall with only hints of citrus and mild floral notes. Nose is quite sweet with a sugary character akin to fructose corn syrup for some reason.
T - Very distinctive caramely, bready and grainy malt character. Overall, the red ale aspect dominates the flavor, while the hops are definitely secondary. A spicy kick appears in the middle, but quickly transforms into a sweet brown sugar/maple syrupy finish with a toasty character and subtle hop bite.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth yet syrupy texture with a bit of carbonation and some slight bristle on the tongue. Slight bittersweet finish on the palate.
D - Fine blend of the tree styles, though I would have liked to have seen more of the DIPA or even IPA characteristics shining through. Ultimately, this drinks like a typical red ale.
