UPDATE - August 2009
this place loses some of its splender the second and third time around. the acoustics are such that when more than fifteen people are there, it feels like a noisy sports bar without the flat screens. the first time this BA visited there were only about six to ten people around, which is just the right amount. the service was less than impressive, with unattentive bar staff and long waits for drinks. that being said, the tap list is still the best in Milwaukee and the prices are still excellent.
Sugar Maple may be the best beer bar in the Milwaukee Area. Why? A tap list that is 50+ beers deep without any standard or easy to find offerings (and a light emphasis on local-esque brewers), laid back conditions without heavy traffic, and very inexpensive prices. This BA had the following:
Dogfish Head Festina Pêche - 12 oz - $5
Lakefront Rosie Sour Kriek - 10 oz - $3.5
Sprecher Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale - 10 oz - $5.5
atmosphere is laid back, with a faux-modern feel and an airy overall aura. lounge seating in the form of Bertoia Chairs and wooden tables are throughout, along with a rail and bar stools against the wall opposite from the bar. on a Friday night, there were only around fifteen to twenty people there, no drunks or obnoxiousness. very laid back place, pleasant to drink a good brew.
quality and service were good. proper glassware, knowledgeable barkeeps and timely service.
selection was quite deep. very obscure and unique offerings, none of which are standards or easy to find elsewhere.
food is only in the form of two daily soups and bread, though ordering in is allowed.
overall, this was a wonderful experience. this BA has found a new go-to spot in Milwaukee for obscure and great beer. cheers!
