Came here, as always, after a Brewers game. I was, as always, already drunk.
It was dimly lit in a good way. I felt classy, not like there was any stabbing or grifting afoot. The bartenders were very pretty. The bar itself was made of gilt, polished wood. The music was good, too. A playlist instead of a jukebox, and so long as the person making that playlist knows anything about music that's usually a good thing. Or, well, really all I ask is that there's no Jack Johnson, Nickelback, or Lady GaGa, nor any other of the dozen or so shades of beige that make up the music at must pubs. If you toss in F-IRE Collective and Portishead, then that's just a double win.
The tap selection is expansive in the best possible way. There are several beers for every mood. I adore Waterloo, Iowa's Lava Lounge, but too many of their beers are high ABV. Same with the Map Room. On the other end of the spectrum, Hook's Pub in Clinton, Iowa brags about having 21 beers on tap, but aside from a single Sam Adam's all of those taps are from Bud, Miller, or Coors. Sugar Maple's selection is not only crapless, it is also varied enough so that you can get tipsy or sloshed or both, depending on your mood. Lots of rares and one-offs, too.
Large, relaxed, clean, and inexpensive, this the easily the best beer bar in Milwaukee.
