Pours a deep cola color with a half finger lighter beige head that settles very quickly, aromas mainly of piney hops,a little dark bread and mild brown sugar is detected but both are on the lighter side.Pine and earthy tones on the palate with brown-sugar-like sweetness lingering into the finish. Not bad but really kinda average for the style,my first try of this brewery and it's not bad.

A - Nearly opaque, deep dark brown with a modest bubbly head with nice lacing
S - Very smooth and inviting chocolate, tootsie roll, bread, also tempered by some fruityness like prune and raisin.
T - Light, sweet chocolate up front. Followed eventually by a powerful wall of bitterness which seems to have orange peel and pineapple rind associated with it. Dark rye bread, hard crackers. Extremely faint sense of citrus, maybe pineapple, in the distant aftertaste.
M - Smooth at the start, the beer clings to all areas of the mouth but doesn't feel too syrupy or oily. Bitterness lingers for quite a while after each taste and is a little distracting.
O - A beer with a good start but sort of a confused, uneven finish. Flavors aren't especially satisfying, but it goes down easy and so long as you have the mettle for bitter beers it's really not bad.

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer pours deep brownish black, with slight haze (though completely opaque in the glass), and falls into a heavy tan head. Big coffee aromas, like I should be expecting a coffee stout or imperial stout. And actually, given the mouthfeel and level of roastiness, this could very well be a highly hopped, high gravity, stout, from a West coast brewery. I don't get much of the grapefruity or piney citrus I'd expect from a black IPA, but I do get all the richness and dark fruit (plums, raisins). Very enjoyable, and to be sought out, if not exactly the genre I expected.

This bottle is labeled 6.8% alc/vol and 67 IBUs.
