Who would have told Louis Moritz, who came to Barcelona originally from Alsace, that more than 150 years later his beer would become a symbol of the city, woven in with its culture, gastronomy and history? Without overlooking of course its taste and quality.

330ml bottle. I had a wheelchair-bound woman from Spain tell me a few months ago that this stuff was the proverbial shit. Who am I to question such nationalistic fervour?
This beer pours a clear pale golden colour, with one finger of broadly foamy off-white head, which leaves a low, slowly ebbing wash of painted lace around the glass as it hastily settles.
It smells of mild, sweet bready malt, kind of pastry-like, a bit of sugared apple and pear, and soft, earthy, musty hops. The taste is bready, somewhat biscuity malt, with a nice even sweetness, a subtle orchard fruitiness, and underwhelming grassy, leafy hops.
The carbonation is quite subtle, and non-intrusive, the body a decently hefty medium weight, with a general, pleasant smoothness. It finishes on the sweet side, the bakery-abutting malt still happy to provide the main flourish as things peter out.
An agreeable enough pale lager, with more cream or blonde ale characteristics than is the norm, but hey, who's complaining - you get a relative buttload (that's metric, for you Yanks) more bang for your buck, even with the dear import prices around here.

July 2007: 330 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.4%. Crystal clear pale golden colour, fizzy, large head. Sweetish aroma with notes of grass, honey and butterscotch. The flavour has some malts and butterscotch (diacetyl), moderately sweet, and very moderate hops. Rubbery finish. Soft mouthfeel. Could have been worse.

The pour is pale yellow with a thick head of white foam. This beer is well carbonated. The taste is malted barley, some grassy notes, steamed cauliflower, faint hop bitterness to counteract the sweetness but the finish seems to be a bit off putting & I got the same thing on the 2nd sip as well but after that is where that finish seems to round itself out. Hmmm, I wonder what's the cause of that? In addition to, this beer both looks & tastes fresh although there is no date to be found anywhere on the bottle. I've had better Euro Pale Lagers but this one ain't too bad. Spain has great beer distribution btw, we get pretty much every beer they make over here in the states. Cheers! B-
