Here is a perfect example of the worst flavours in lager. This beer has some decent hops on board and nice esters, but the nasty creamed corn and rancid butter notes are appalling. The beer would be more aptly named in my opinion as Railway City Canada Orville Reddenbacher. Yuck.

473ml Can from the Ottawa LCBO for $3

Appearance - Clear gold colour with an average size white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, hops, grass, grains/bread

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, caramel, and hops. There is also some breads/grains and some grassy notes and corn.

Overall - Delivers as advertised.. pretty crisp and refreshing. Not a remarkable beer but still pretty tasty and very sessionable. Given the ABV this would make a great beer to drink all day long while at the cottage etc.

My mother in law travelled to Dutton for a family gathering and brought back a mixed 6pack from the brewery. This beer does well for the style. Having been weaned on American Pale Lager here in the land of 10,000 lakes, i figured I'd give my two cents.

Best before date of June 1, 2013.

The beer pours a thin white head which quickly dissipates. The smell right off is nice. A touch floral, most any aroma dissappears quickly. The look for a pale lager is great. A nice golden hue. Good carbonation makes for a nice light mouthfeel. Good bitter/sourness that I like.

All around solid effort.

On a summer day outside this is the kind of beer you keep reaching into the cooler for.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery store; best before Oct 11 2012. Brewed with pilsner malt and Hallertau hops, as I understand it this is supposed to be a 'craft-quality light lager'. I've had it a few times now, and I'd have to say they've definitely succeeded at producing something light, clean and drinkable that isn't totally bland. This bottle was apparently quite fresh off the line, i.e. not much more than a day old.

Pours a pale, clear golden-yellow colour, topped with one finger of fizzy white head that quickly dissipates into a soapy cap and collar. Clean aroma with some wet, grassy hay, white grapes, honey and bready pale malt sweetness. Very fresh-smelling, and fairly attractive for the style.

The freshness seems to make a difference, as this one's flavour is much fuller than the last few bottles I had. Bready, buttery biscuit sweetness and honey-glazed pale malts comprise the bulk of the initial flavour, followed by some grassy, floral hop dryness in the finish. Mild biscuit and honey sweetness in the aftertaste that doesn't linger long. Relatively light-bodied, with a slick mouthfeel that clings to the palate. Fairly mild carbonation for a pale lager, which lets the flavour shine through (and doesn't make me bloated).

This particular offering is easily one of the best OCB pale lagers I've had in recent memory. This stuff is made for sessioning, and IMO would definitely be worth bringing into local LCBOs. I am not certain if this is a 'year-round' offering yet, but it probably should be; like their blonde it probably has a lot of mass appeal simply because of its familiar appearance. But don't be fooled - it tastes pretty good for what it is, especially when fresh.

Final Grade: 3.98, a very solid B+. I am not frequently impressed with pale lagers, but Canada Southern Draft deserves a lot of praise. This is a really tasty brew that goes well beyond the bland stereotype, and remains extremely drinkable like a light lager should be. It's not the cheapest tipple I've ever had, but it's far superior to most of the pale lagers you'll find on shelves around here. I'd definitely consider this one worth a try, and would love to sample it on-tap/in a growler some time.
