My first of two Amber Ales for New Beer Sunday (Week 636) comes to me courtesy of my local, in-person trader, tone77. I have no idea of where or how he scored beer from South Africa, but it really does not matter. Even if the beer turns out to be no bueno, it will still be a novelty! Cue Monty Python's "The Lumberjack Song" as accompaniment.

From the bottle: "Lumberjack Amber Ale is as bold as the woodsman who worked the timber in a bygone era. Today, in a time of mass-produced, commodity driven beer, Lumberjack stands apart. Rooted in tradition and craftsmanship, we make our beer the hard way - without cutting corners."; "Lumberjack has a sturdy malt driven backbone, packed with loads of roasted malt. Huge hop additions intensify the piney-citrus aromas of this full-flavored ale. A beer for the brave."; "Original Gravity 1.058[,] IBU's 40".

I was brave enough to Pop! the cap, but not enough to conduct anything more than a gentle pour into my awaiting glass. An in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, light-tan head that slowly fell, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was more pine than citrus, underlain with a caramel malt sweetness, but that seems fitting that a pine tree would be more prevalent when talking about a Lumberjack. Mouthfeel was medium, but highly carbonated, giving it a scrubbing quality on my tongue. The taste was interesting in that it straddled the early microbrewery Amber Ale recipe, which was quite malty, and the contemporary hop-forward recipe which allowed for the style's resurgence. I got a good bit of caramel malt, but at the same time, I also got a lot of pine hops. Shall we call this "balance"? Good stuff! Finish was in that middle ground of no-man's-land between semi-sweet & semi-dry, but here I began to get a lemony citrusiness that lingered well after my swallow. Very interesting! Now, if I could just find a ship headed around the Cape of Good Hope, I would be all set. I still want to make that voyage as well as under Cape Horn & through the Panama Canal. I have sailed everywhere else.

Poured from a brown 14.8 oz. bottle. Has a pretty dark amber color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of caramel malts. Taste is well balanced caramel malts and hops, smooth and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer.

You know what I like most about this one? The hop aroma- woody, medicinal, herbal. Lovely eucalyptus-like character to it. I also appreciate the bready malt to balance out the hop choice. Pleasant, easy to drink, especially in the 500ml format I found them in.

The Lumberjack Amber is a GOOOD beer! It poured a clear rich amber that had a frothy white head which is leaving some lacings. The scent carries a nice bready malt. The taste has a great malt balance with just enough hops to keep it from being to sweet as well as keep the pallet somewhat clean. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall this is an excellent session beer and offer a reprieve from the Euro pale lagers and pilsners mass produced in South Africa. Great Job!
