look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Deep mahogany in color, opaque to light, with a fairly large tan head, which retains well, and scattered broken lacing.

Aroma: Bitter cocoa, caramel, and toffee dominate the aroma, with the cocoa being most prominent.

Taste: Opens with bitter cocoa, soon followed by roasted malt, verging on burnt, with a bit of toffee as well. As the taste progresses, the burnt flavors dominate. Finishes with lingering roasted flavors, and a bit of noble hop bitterness.

Mouth feel: Soft, but a bit thin, with little carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: The roasted malt seems a bit overdone, and the body a bit thin. A decent example, which could be world-class, if the recipe were tweaked a bit.

Presentation: Packaged in a plain twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

Franconia Dunkel pours from the bottle to a brown, cloudy body. A good pour produces very little foam and there is little or no lacing. The nose on the beer is one of light roasted coffee with a dab of toffee.

With the taste, this beer offers flavors of light roasted malt, a touch of chocolate/cocoa and some toffee and light caramel. Further tasting reveals a slight flavor of licorice. There is less of a fruity component to the flavor than expected and the body of the beer leans toward the thin side.

This dunkel brew is an acceptable example of the style, but notice how many times I used the word “light” in my descriptions? That is probably the main problem I have with this beer. The thin body and light character make it seem like a beer with potential that hasn’t been met. I did notice that the character is better if you pour two- thirds of the bottle into a glass, swirl the remainder, and then quickly dump it into the same glass. But the lightness still remains, and that may be enough to ruin the tasting for some. It certainly isn’t a bad beer, but it may not have enough body and flavor to satisfy the harshest critics among us.

Pours a dark brown color with thin off white head that left plenty of lacing.
It has a sweet roasted toffee aroma with some chocolate.
Tastes of roasted dark malt with a slight metallic tang and some chocolate.
It's kind of thin with low carbonation an a nice dry finish.
Solid beer, easy drinking, I'd get it again.

Appearance: Nice dark color. It poured a nice 3 finger head and laced a bit.

Smell: Chocolatey. Roasted malts. Definitely what I was expecting.

Taste: The taste was a bit more like a dry Irish stout to me more than of a dunkelweizen. I'm ok with that except I mark it down a bit for not meeting their expected style. The most pronounced flavor is the roasted malt which was nice. There is a hint of hop and frankly I'm glad they didn't over hop which I find typical of American produced versions of Old World styles.

Mouthfeel: It was a bit thin but it didn't take away from the beer.

Overall: I'd have another. For a fairly new brewery, not a bad beer.
