A- Very dark brown to black. Tannish head that dissipates

S- Roasted, almost coffee like smell. Nice and warming quality

T- Chocolatey with coffee mixed throughout. Smooth flavor which is well "blended". Nothing jumps out at you too much, but all flavors are noticeable.

M- Decent body. Not too heavy, but still a nice weight. Carbonation is perfect.

D- The taste lasts a little too long on the tongue. Almost a bothersome effect that detracts from an overall pretty good beer.

Picked up a growler at Craft Ale House...thanks to Josh for the ride.
Pours a dark chestnut w/ a thin tan head...very little lacing as I work my way thru the pint.
Inviting aromas of faint smoke, roasted malt and yeast.
Taste is just as enjoyable...not overly smoked but a great flavor with that roastiness really shining thru as I consume this one.
A tad thin for the mouthfeel, but not overly so for the style....finishes very clean with almost no lingering aftertaste.
Drinkability is a solid 4.5...could drain this growler in no time and would not be bored in the least.
Glad I picked this one up, since there would be no way to find it around these parts.
My first RP brew and hopefully not the last.

Color is very dark brown, almost black. Thinnish head goes down fairly quickly. Nose is very mild, a little sweet, not especially indicative of the taste. I couldn't really perceive any smoke in the nose immediately after it was drawn, and not much after it had stood a bit either. Taste is nicely balanced between sweet malt, lightly bitter coffee and smokey with some meaty/savory character. Very nice Rauch. I will certainly look forward to trying more offerings from Roy Pitz Brewing if this is an indication of their beers.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts and smoke. Taste is roasted malts, meaty, a good bit of smokiness. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall, although I am not a huge fan of this style, this was an enjoyable beer.

A glass on-tap.

A: The lager is dark, closer in color to a schwarzbier. The black darkess surprised me. A thin head came along with the glass.

S: The nose isn't an all-out rauch fest. Instead, it allows the darker chocolate malts to mix with the mild smokiness. The result is sweet, making me want a sip.

T: The dunkel lager stresses its malty side before submitting to the rauch. Chocolate and darker malts lend a sweetness to the lager, a bready flavor that is stronger than the smoke. As the rauch flavors move in, they add more sweet flavors along with a meaty finish. It's worth noting that the smoke never gets in the way; this is a mildly smoked dark lager and not the other way around.

M: The mouthfeel is clean, chewy with a dark undertone. I'm impressed with how well the flavors combine.

Poured from the bottle into an Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier pint glass.

Extremely light and large foamy cocoa colored four finger head off the pour with a good amount of staying power that settles to a one finger foamy puck. Body color is extremely dark for a "rauchbier", nearly pitch black but with some light walnut black coloring. Pretty aggressive looking brew.

Nose is odd. Huge amount of imitation like smelling powdered chocolate, almost like Nestle Quick on the nose, but not as enjoyable. Faint smoke, and a weird sweetness that puts the bouquet incredibly off balance. Not good, not sure where this is going.

Palate is incredibly flat, and lifeless, and flavorless Mid palate only fills with a good amount of ashen like smoke but with virtually no malt or rich sweetness of caramel only after you swallow. Extremely ashy flavors. Return sips force me to smell that horrible chocolate just making the experience even less enjoyable. Lifeless.

I love Rauchbier it's one of my favorite styles and this is just really not good. Screwy mix of flavors through a wet palate. This is almost as if someone took flat homebrew and mixed it with Nestle Quick and served it.

Poured from a growler that was filled the morning of tasting this beer.
16 oz Poured in to a stout glass.

poured out dark brown, but appears more black than brown in the glass. minimal if any light tranparency. Good lacey white/brown head formation- 2 fingers worth. slowly decreases over time

Smell of roasted nut or chocolate. Distance charcoal aroma.

Tastes of a dark roasted coffee with a moderate smokey, burnt , near a campfire sensation.

Good overall smoothness. Nothing stands alone, yet nothing goes unnoticed.

Excellent drinkability. Very enjoyable.

Im sampling a cold 12 oz bottle poured into a glass mug.
The beer pours a dark rich cola brown with ruby highlights. A .5 cm creamy tan head foams up after an aggressive pour and fades to a wispy island after only a few seconds.
The aroma is roasted malt to the point of being smokey, I didnt anticipate just how smokey this would be. The label says dark lager, but BA has it as a rauchbier. I go with the latter and move on. I also get a little brown sugar, but make no mistake the nose is smokey, not campfire ash, just burnt wood.
First sip reveals fine fizzy carbonation that tickles on each sip.
Also makes for some pretty quick and hefty burps, that feature brown sugar and a bit of black licorice note.
the texture is crisp and clean and the beer is immensely drinkable.
The flavor of the beer is malt and malt. Again I get some light brown sugar and a bit of roasted malt. There is some smoke that lingers on each sip, but otherwise the finish is fairly clean.
I enjoy this beer and its fairly robust flavor profile mixed with clean easy to drink qualities.
This I would buy again and would recommend to folks that appreciate the style.

Bottle to Dimpled Mug

Thanks to my RS guy TroyG2352 for this one

App- It poured a dark brown, maybe more like a soda with a good blend of colors and moved into a off khaki head with some lacing down the side. Was okay. Nothing fancy solid.

Smell- It was way to sweet on the nose. It had too much sugary black licorice and not too much smoke to balance it all out.

Taste- WTF happened to this. Its just wayyyy to sweet and has overpowering licorice. Touch of smoke and some meat behind it. I cant finish it. I took 3 sips and fed it to the sink.

Mouth- Light, thin body with a smooth carbonation. Residual black licorice and candy.

Drink- Not for me. I tried it. Probably the worst Rauchbier I have had.

On tap at Brass Rail Deli

A-Deep dark brown with a medium tan head that slowly reduced to a thin cap that left decent lace. This is a bit darker for a rauch than I am use to.

S-Nice hickory smoke aroma with dark roasted malt supporting in the background.

T-Fairly hefty roasted malt mixes very nice with a strong, but not overpowering smoke flavour. This is a very well balanced and tasty smoked brew. A hint of a hop bite in the finish.

M-Medium body and very smooth.

D-Not quite a traditional rauchbier, and not hefty enough to be a smoked porter...falls in between the two....maybe a smoked brown. Regardless of what it really is it is a winner. I love smoked beers and when done right I become a fan quickly.

Finally got a roy pitz brew, at the brewhouse...

Poured into a standard pint glass, color is very solid black with tan head, that lasts and laces.

Smell is slightly smokey, mixed with roast, Otherwise clean.

Taste is very well done, dunkel upfront in terms of mild roast, clean flavors, followed by a nice light smokiness, sometimes mixed with a bubblegum type flavor

Mouthfeel is slightly lingering for dunkel, sits on the to gue, but could be a product of the smokiness

Overall, nicel done brew, clean dunkel, flavor light smokiness to come through and linger nIcely

Poured dark brown with some deep chestnut highlights; minimal head retention. Very smoky in the aroma - sort of a sweet hickory scent. Roasted and perfume notes as well as a hint of cocoa and honey sweetness. Smoke very present on the palate, followed by slight tartness and a mildly bitter finish. Body is light/medium and very creamy. Average drinkability; smokiness is a bit overpowering.

I had this on tap at Relax

A-Dark in color, not black, maybe a deep brown that lets some light through. 1 Finger of head.

S-Light roasted smell, a bit of malt.

T-The taste was good. A lot of roasted malt flavor, with a hint of smokiness. Not as much as I had expected, but balanced well in the background.

M-Good mouthfeel. Slightly creamy and smooth. Low carbonation, but not too low.

D-This was quite a drinkable beer. Goes down easy and smooth.

A - Served with a very dark body...I'd say it was more black than brown...a tight, brown head stood about a finger tall and slowly settled...nice lacing

S - Deep roasted malts really come through and mix with hints of chocolate and some faint smoke

T - The roastiness continues through the taste...the malts are perfectly roasted and never become burnt or bitter...a chocolate flavor is more apparent now...this beer isn't as smokey as I was expecting from a Rauchbier...a subtle hop bite sneaks up at the end

M - Medium bodied...linger roasted flavor from the malts...goes down smooth

D - I've never had a Rauchbier beer before but I was expecting more smoke flavor...overall a solid offering...I look to try more from the local Roy Pitz

A- Black with a light tan head that starts off vigorous but fades quickly.

S- Mild roasted malt aromas with a hint of smoke.

T- Strong upfront malt flavors followed by a slight sweetness which then turns into spicy and smokey flavors that linger on the tongue.

M- Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

D- Highly drinkable. It's very flavorful but not overpowering.

This is probably my favorite brew from Roy Pitz. I've had their Fat Daddy Sacks and Blonde on tap back in November and wasn't very impressed. I was convinced to take a visit to their brewery after visiting my local homebrew show. I wasn't disappointed. They gave free samples of every beer they had on tap. There Quad was delicious as well.
