This old established popular community pub has been in the Camra Good Beer Guide for many years, for its selection of real ales, and commitment to all things beery. There are usually two Beer Festivals held in the pub each year, and, in conjuction with the local Camra group, coach trips to Breweries and Beer Festivals often start and finish from here. Local Camra group often meets here for Committee Meetings and Social events.
Appearance is of two old terraced houses joined into one pub, with large bar on the left and smaller lounge area to the right. Outside at rear of premises is a small beer garden. The bar area is decorated with Rugby memorabilia, shirts and photos, a weakness of the boss!
The location is just off Spon End, about 25 minutes walk from Coventry Station, or bus to Spon End or Hearsall Common will get you close.
There are normally at least 5 different beers on hand pull in addition to the usual lagers and cider. The beer range varies, and often there is something unusual you might not see elsewhere.
Food is good value and popular at lunchtimes, though I do not have any recent experience of it.
Service is normally good, though once or twice in the past it seemed patchy, with extremes between bar staff who were keen on the beers and knew what was what, and others who seemed to know little or nothing or even cared - though maybe I was just unlucky at that time!
A well known and popular real ale pub in Coventry, with good beer selection. Well worth looking out for when in Coventry.
