Tucked away in the residential Fishtown area of Philly, Memphis Taproom looks unassuming from the outside. So much so that I went right past it upon arrival. The exterior almost blends right in with the surrounding apartments. Street parking was easy and I had a few minutes to kill before it opened, so I took an enjoyable walk around the neighborhood.

Inside, I was greeted by the bartender who was very social with me and the other people at the bar. The front area where I sat is a nice bar with a single tv behind it. There is a back area with tables, as well as small beer garden area outside that was not open yet. There were about 20 drafts including 2 cask offerings, mostly American craft with some quality imports mixed in, all reasonably priced.

I ordered my first beer, Dieu du Ciel Péché Mortel, and the smoked coconut club sandwich. The beer was served in a wine glass and was better than I remembered. I've had it before, but to enjoy it on tap is a rare experience. My day could not have started off any better. The sandwich came next and was served with a very generous portion of fries. Both were great. When I was finished, I cooled down with a Victory Braumeister Pilsner. I was actually deciding between this and another beer but once the bartender said, "Victory crushes pilsners,"after asking for his recommendation there was no turning back. And he was right. As good or possibly better than Prima Pils, an outstanding pilsner in its ownright.

I only left the bar because I had other places on my itinerary for the day. Honestly, I could have spent all day here making my way through the creative food and well-thought out tap list. The quality and service of both the beer and food combined with the laid back vibe made my visit here an excellent one. Looking forward to returning in the future.

If I had to sum up a review of this establishment to only a few things it would be this:
1) Fried. F'ing. Pickles. If you go home hungry, it's your own fault.
2) Outdoor hot dog cart and beer garden. First and only time I've seen Heady sold at a venue. It is rare to find it on a shelf in the city, and even rarer to find it at a hot dog cart.
3) Outstanding beer selection of both bottle and draft varieties.

Weekend trip to Philadelphia, the wife wants some brunch. I scramble to find a place and BA takes me to Memphis Taproom. Unlikely neighborhood for such a great beer bar, very working class and outright ghetto around the edges.

The Memphis is a classic Philly corner bar repurposed into a slightly-hipster-but-very-welcoming craft establishment. Very chill all around, we sat at a table by the bar upfront but there is also a dining area on the back.

The bottled beer list is excellent and includes Sucaba, Fantome Saison, J.W. Lee’s vintages, lots of Belgian brews, Angel’s Share ’09… the taps (ten of them) are more limited: Dogfish 60 and Olde ’12, Lees Moon Raker, Sly Fox, Allagash White and two casks. I was expecting much more from one of the best beer bars in Philadelphia, but I wasn’t terribly unhappy. The brunch bloody mary’s were wow!

And so was the food. I had a vegan brunch to die for, including a tofu scramble and smoked coconut. Serious flavor. Brunch and brews for two came up to around fifty bucks, while single beers are priced at six or seven dollars. Probably my favorite part of Memphis was the service. So incredibly nice!!

This could be the best local hangout EVER.

Visited in July 2013:

We visited this place on a complete whim, as we were heading over to Tacconelli's Pizzeria (some of the best pizza ever), but needed to kill some time. Frankly, I think that this place is just about as good as you get. The location is quintessential Philly, tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood. The wait staff were excellent and more than happy to talk to you about beer (we visited mid-afternoon, so that may not be representative if you visit in the evening). The place had a wide range of people, locals as well as those making the pilgrimage...like myself and my wife. They only had about 8 beers on tap, but the variety was across the board. There is not really much to say, other than, get here. World class establishment.

I liked this place a lot. We were visting from Chicago, and they had Half Acre (a local Chicago phenom) on draft. Apparently Philly is the only other city where it is available because the owner is originally from here. Memphis Taproom doesn’t have that many taps, but they are all very carefully selected. The second night we were there, there was a food truck in the beer garden. The location is a little out of the fray and lots of locals hang out here. I will definitely be back here multiple times every time I’m in Philly.
