I stopped by based on BA reviews while in the area on business. From the front, it looks like a European knick knack shop. But they have a nice german bottle selection in back and an outstanding bar and beer garden hidden beyond that.I expected outstanding, authentic German beers which they have. But they also have fantastic American beers in tap and in the bottle. And they have a good selection of vintage and rare bottles. A great place that's well worth a visit!!!

Awesome spot with a good beer selection. When it isn't packed it is one of my favorite places I have ever gotten a beer. Great (and huge) pretzels and solid food. Only downside is how popular it is and how crowded it gets on the weekends.

Only downside of this german beer garden style restaurant-bar is that people have figured out it rocks and it can get really crowded at times. Fantastic lunch spot!

GHS is a local gem on the San Francisco Peninsula. It's a German store (everything from German toiletries to local German breads and baked goods, to German foodstuffs and tons of chocolates and snacks (Chipsfrisch!) and knick-knacks/kitsch). They always stock German holiday foods like Stollen and Ostereier, based on the season. They also put on a fantastic Oktoberfest on the first weekend of every September - NOT TO BE MISSED in the bay area.

As for the beer garden, it's indoor/outdoor, has 13 German/Austrian taps, 6 American craft taps, all incredible choices. They have typically 3 beers that are pretty much always there, which are Weihenstephaner Vitus Weizenbock (the king of all wheat beers), Köstritzer Schwarzbier, and Weltenburger Dunkel. Other than that everything rotates and the selection is always top-notch. In addition they have an amazing rare bottle selection at the bar, and a good bottle variety in the store.

The food is great too, at lunch they have things like Leberkäse, Bratwurst, monster Pretzels, and a fantastic ever-changing Flammkuchen (flatbread). But on Saturday lunchtime is the real food attraction, and it has made my entire family into regulars for Saturday lunch - family recipes from Grandpa Staudt! I'll rank off all the favorites I've seen lately: Sauerbraten (this last Sat), Jägerschnitzel, Wienerschnitzel, Tafelspitz, Goulasch, Königsburger Klöpse, Pflaumbraten, Schweinshaxen, man the list goes on.

In the evenings this place gets overrun with beer lovers, so they limit the kitchen offerings to usually one entrée choice and several sides (Obatzda, Pretzel, Baked Brie, Kartoffelpuffe, etc).

Every beer lover and Germanophile in Northern California absolutely must make a pilgrimage here at some point. Of course all the local German ex-pats regularly come here too, especially on Saturday lunch.

Not to be missed, period.

We were headed back from lunch when my Branch Manager suggested a detour. Im in!
The infamous bar where the iphone 4 was "stolen" from a patron.

Atm- Huge indoor area with a large and long L shaped bar. The right side is the harder to find German imports with the bottle list in chalk above it. On the left is the craft side. A good outside area for mingling and eating.

Quality- Holy cow? How do they get these beers here? Thats just crazy? I mean. Ive seen some good German kegs before but this is another level really.

Service- Our girl was awesome. Quick, attentive, friendly and very happy to help suggest something for us to try.

Selection- An amazing array of german beers on tap with the correct glassware. What did I go with V-I-T-U-S!!! Hell to the yeah!!

Food- N/A

Value- Great pricing. Great beers.

GHS is one of the hidden gems on the peninsula for great beer & awesome food. Looks like a real German beer hall with outdoor seating & family-friendly indoor area, no TVs, just a simple classy looking place. The owners & servers are great people, friendly, knowledgeable & usually timely with orders. The real highlight is the selection of German weizens, bocks, pils, gose, etc. - the good classics you don't find on tap often plus a guest tap of good craft and occasional events with some rarer kegs. Traditional glassware is used, and there is a decent selection of bottles too. The food is also classic German - sausages, pretzels, mashed potatos - and it's all delicious and goes with the beer really well. Low key, almost never crowded, and unusual beer - I love this place!

Where to start, I love Gourmet Haus. It has been my favorite local bar for quite a while. Volker and Maryann the owners, are incredible people. They're always are going out of the way for their customers, and it shows. Between Volker, and Chris, they always have a bunch of great beer to choose from. You never need to worry about having the same beer they serve everywhere else. The food is fantastic, and very well priced. Try the special, you wont be disappointed. If you're ever in the area, it's an absolute must.

GHS is definetly a great place to come after work and grab a beer and a plate of sausage. This place has an amazing selection of germany beer in bottles and on tap, which is better than any other place ive seen. They also have been getting lots of craft beer on tap and on the shelves and have even hosted some SF beerweek events which were some of my favorites.

Beer aside the food is really good for a bar type restaurant. Thier smoked bratwursts are my favorite along with a giants pretzel with cheese and meat.

Overall I love this place, im lucky to work close by to it.

Volker and Maryanne. They run this place, and they are very friendly, nice and hard working.

The food selection here is great. Get whatever is on special, Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel, Schweine Schnitzel, Kassler Rippchen, Bratwurst, Knackwurst, Bockwurst, Jägerschnitzel Champignonsoße mit Spätzle und grünem. Great.

Fries are good. Salad is good. Brie is good. The pretzels are from Esther's bakery. They are very good. The food is comfort food, filling, tasty, and perfect for beer.

The beers are excellent. They have the best selection of German beers in the Bay Area. The only problem is if you like a certain beer you'll have to come back quite often to see it again. Luckily a high quality German is always around for each type, Kolsch, Pils, Weiss, various Bocks, sometimes a Rauchbier, always a Kostritzer, a Spaten is usually there, Hofbrau, Weihenstephaner, Weltenberger, Gaffel, Zunf, Reissdorf, Innstadt, Marhs U, Aventinus.

The guest taps are very, very good most of the time.

The bottles of beer are excellent, Rochefort, Draak, DElerium, Krieks and Lambics, Karmeleit, Bernadus, Orval.

No TV, environment is very social. Can get wildly crowded and later the bouncers are very cool Will and Bubba.

Earlier in the evening and afternoon kids are right at home here too.

If you have to drink some money at the end of a long week, this is one of the best places to do it. Relaxing, decent food, good company, good beers, very nice.

We have Irish style pubs, English style pubs, and Belgian style bistros. But where's the love for a German style beer house? The Gourmet Haus Staudt may be the best answer to that question which isn't a relocated Hofbrauhaus. From the enterence, you walk through the "store" part that carries all sorts of merchandise, inclduing some bottles beers. There's a second floor which leads to the dining room. However, the bar is at store level, tucked in its own corner away from plain sight. The establishment in general is extremely clean. The wooden chairs and tables look "fresh", the bar area also well polished.

A dozen beers on-tap, the focus on harder to find German kegs. Weltenburger, Hofbrau Delicator (which I had never seen or heard before), Kulmbacher, Kostritzer, even some Mikkeller Single Hop Amarillo. The bottles selection is more mixed, Germans plus a good number of Belgians and a few Americans in the bunch; Leipziger Gose, Hanseens, Uerige, Augustiner, Fantome, AleSmith IPA, Strubbe. Several pieces of glassawre were being used, among them a two liter glass boot that can be filled with a few of the tap options.

After visiting a lot of different bars in such a short time, Gourmet Haus Staudt provided a great breakaway from the mold. This would be an ideal place to socialize with friends while having some beers. Should I return, ordering a full meal will be at the top of the list.

A german store with a bar and restaurant in the back, located in downtown Redwood City Visited on 2/19/11 for Kern River Brewing night as part of SF Beer Week.

The store was closed when we came (6PM on a Sat) so we entered around back. They have an outdoor biergarten that was not utilized at the time due to rainy weather. Inside they have a bar as well as a seating area with tables. Definitely has a german feel to it. A very family friendly place, lots of kids and families inside.

They only were serving 3 food items: A plate with pork chops, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, an enormous pretzel served with mustard or cheese and salami, and french fries. We had the pretzel and the pork chop plate. Both were very good.

The bar has about 15 taps. It looks like they typically have about 10 excellent german selections and then a few guest taps. On this particular night all of the guest taps were taken over by Kern River. The service at the bar and the table was friendly and speedy.

I really enjoyed this place and will definitely be coming back in the future.

A German specialty food store in the front with a decent German beer and wine bottle selection. However, the real reason you should visit Gourmet Haus Staudt is for the beer garden/bar in the back part of the building.

You can enter the beer garden from a back entrance and the inside is a random assortment of long tables, bar seating, stool seating. German decor, with some assorted Belgian items scattered here an there. Crowd is definitely from nearby Silicon Valley, people coming in after work for a drink or four. The people who frequent the place are generally friendly the times I've been there, and the wait staff are nice when they're not rushing around a busy night.

There are 12 rotating taps available, with beers served in appropriate glassware. Mostly German beers, with 1-2 domestic or Belgian guest taps from what I've been told. Service is decent, but it can be a little hard to get the attention of the waiters when it gets crowded and busy.

The food is written on a chalk board in the downstairs seating area, usually pretzels (very good), pommes frites with sauces, and a dinner option of sausages, schnitzel or other German entrees. Had the schnitzel plate recently, which came with some very good frites (though no dipping sauces were provided), and a nice green salad with a tangy vinaigrette that helped balanced the fried foods.

Prices are pretty typical for a beer bar in the area, with most pours being around $6.

I was doing a job in the area and had a craving for German, this place came up on a search so I went. Now I come here at least once a week to see what is on tap. The rotating selection of German beers is great, and the bottle selection in the store is enough to have two or three German only beer tastings easily.

Then there are the two guest taps, they get beers you expect to see in only the most discerning beer establishments and some that seem impossible for anyone to get. The lines are always clean, the staff is always friendly, and they always have the appropriate glass for the beer, if not a glass from the brewery.

Oh, and this is a great place to meet people. Sit at the bar and you could have a new drinking buddy in less than 30 min!

Been coming here for a few years now and this place has changed a lot recently now that it's been passed down to the next generation.

Half the space (used to be more than that) is a store selling German food, beer, and trinkets. I can always get my fill of pastries and bottled beer here. There are some neat glasses and steins scattered around the store as well.

The back half of the space is the restaurant which seems to be more of a bar nowadays. They've expanded the draft list and included a couple amerikanisch Biere.

Granted I've only been visiting this plae the past 3-4 years but my mom has been going in longer than that and from what we've seen the clientelle has changed from the old guard of local Germans to a slightly younger and more diverse crowd. Not a complaint, just an interesting observation. In general the whole place is pretty laid back and friendly. The old owners as well as the new owners are super friendly and willing to hang out. Lots of good memories here and I hope they continue to become more popular.

Not quite sure how to score the selection. There are a dozen beers or so to pick from (on tap) and the food is authentic. But with German food there arent that many options, which is no fault of Gourmet Haus. Deutches Essen is all either in sausage form or schnitzel'd somehow and all side dishes include potato, mustard, kraut, and vinegar. I love it (minus the sauerkraut).

Will be back when ever in the area which seems to be a few times a year.

Why is it that every time I have a transcendent experience with german beer, I brown out and forget the most intense moment. I'd give you some sad stories about throwing pizza at my girlfriend and getting caught by local authorities wizzing on a moving train, but I can't recall these experiences from my own memory.

It's not my fault that the beer here is so damn great. I know Germany has a bad history of claiming superiority, but they would have a real argument if they said their beer is the best. Haus staudt provides all the best on-tap offerings from deutchland to the U.S. It is obvious that the folks who run this wonderful biergarten have a passion for good beer.

The food is good too!

I haven't eaten here or drunk beer here, only shopped for bottled beer here. This is a small German grocery/gift shop in downtown Redwood City but it has an outstanding selection of German beers, the single best selection of such beers I have seen anywhere in the US. It is outstanding in terms of variety, quality, number of different beers, and hard-to-find beers. For German beers, this is simply the best place in the Bay Area to go, with various bocks, maibocks, alterbiers, kolsch, numerous dunkels, helles, and pilsners. However, don't look for anything other than German beer here.

Met up with Arbitrator, alfrantzell, and largadeer here for a couple beers while I was up in the Bay Area.

The store is located in Downtown Redwood City right across the street from the train station. The place is actually quite massive with an expansive store featuring plenty of German wares in the front entrance-way. As you make your way to the back of the property, you find yourself in the beer garden which has plenty of tables, a small bar, and an outside patio area.

The bar offers about 10 German offerings, all that I tried (or have tried before) were delicious and seemingly about 1 or 2 American craft offerings.

The vibe to this place is perhaps one of the best things about it. Seemingly authentic in every way, with proper glassware for all the different beers.

In addition to the great beer (the tap list is still the same size, but the bottle list is growing at an alarming rate), the food is fantastic. As you might expect, just about everything comes with pork, potatoes, and sauerkraut (in true German fashion). Everything I've eaten here is great, and they have specials on almost everyday.

Wow, what a great beer bar to pop up in Redwood City of all places. This is sort of a German "speakeasy" in that if you don't know, now you know, nig- (sorry, got too into the Biggie Smalls). It's back in a back alley just steps from the Redwood City Caltrain station. I hope it doesn't get more crowded than it is, as the guy losing the iPhone 4G there has already caused the place to be packed.

The bar has a great German tap list. Beers like Uerige Alt, Alllgauer Cambonator, Weltenburger Asam Bock, and the like are likely to be found. On top of that, there are two guest taps, featuring beers from the likes of Moonlight, Jolly Pumpkin, Valley Brew, Mikkeller, Grand Teton, Russian River, you name it. Good stuff, no doubt.

The food, if you can get in when the kitchen is open, is excellent. Very traditional German fare. Very tasty plates of meat and potatoes, pretzels, pickles, and cheese will be prepared for you. Don't tell my fiancee this, but they also have some attractive girls working there, and this is a serious cougar spot on the weekend. The prices are very reasonable for what you get, and the ambiance is a typical beer garden, the way you want it to be.

This is really an amazing place, even if it doesn't cater to beer geeks in the extreme. Go here if you can, but don't tell too many people.

I love this place! I stop in there about once a week and pick up a different assortment of German beer to have for the week. They also have a great selection of imported German foods, treats, coffees, even some current German magazines and CD's.

There is also a little cafe with some great food and some great Beers on tap.

The bottled beer selection is amazing, over 75 different german beers, thats what they say, but I think there might be even more.

Its a family run business and the staff is really helpful/informative and always talkative. One of my favorite things to do every week is make my way into this place and chat with the owner about the beers I tried the week prior.

I cant say enough about this place. I love it!

EDIT: This place is even better now that the beer garden is up and running. Great great beer bar. Just a nice spot to hang out and relax, have a few beers. Couldnt be more perfect. Best place on the peninsula

I saw a review of this place a year or so back and dismissed it as a German shop, with nothing attractive for beer nerds besides a few bottles and a cafe with some taps.

I'm not sure if that has changed recently or if the reviews just failed to mention it, but there is a bar (not just a daytime cafe) in the back, with significant nightlife from Thursday to Saturday evenings.

They have a great assortment of German beers on tap; I haven't gone often enough to assess how many are rotating and how many are fixed, but they usually seem to have one "specialty" tap for sure. In the past it has been St. Bernardus 12, Allagash Odyssey, Fuller's Porter, etc: all thoroughly excellent beers, and it amazes me that he gets these great kegs without serving much of the various breweries' regular beers.

The lines are well-maintained, glassware is appropriately chosen, and they don't serve in frosted glasses (praise the lord!) that I've seen.

The prices are also outstanding, both for what he's serving and for the area. I can grab a half-liter of something for $5 to $7, usually. It's about 20 seconds away from the Redwood City Caltrain stop, so it's pretty much an ideal location for their serving sizes.

The atmosphere is loud, boisterous, and fun. The bartenders are very attentive.

Expect to have a great time here.

This is a German store, which includes an exceptional selection of German beers; definitely the best selection of German beers I've seen anywhere. Edit: They really expanded their beer selection to include a surprising number of other world class beers. My score was bumped up accordingly.

It also has a pub in the back, which I enjoyed, though it only served about a dozen beers in total, including at least one very nice "guest" (non German) beer. But they rotate the beers often, so if you come back, you can always try something new. They have the right glassware for each type of beer, which is nice.

Food is great, and so is the service. The hours are disappointing; as of my writing this, they are closed Sundays (which happens to be the most convenient time for me to go there), and they close early during the week (at 6:00pm), which makes it difficult for me to get there before closing. The bar is open later from Thursday to Saturday.

And if you like German food/candies/chocolates, you can't beat this place.

Tucked away in downtown Redwood City, this unassuming little German grocery/pub probably has the best German beer selection I've ever seen in the US. The recently finished beer garden and bar pours 11 rotating taps, all German with the exception of one guest beer. Volker, the owner, does a great job with the selection; for every Spaten or Hofbrau there's something interesting and obscure, styles ranging from doppelbock to kolsch, hefeweizen to kellerbier. Taps rotate constantly, there's something new on every time I come here, which is admittedly way too often.

Prices are very reasonable, typically $5 for a half-liter, even the stronger offerings. If you've ever wondered how drunk you'd be after a liter of Vitus, now you can find out, and for a paltry $9.50. Most beers are served in their proper glassware, a detail that I appreciate. Being served a Vitus in the authentic Vitus goblet really does enhance the overall experience.

Food is decent, the selection ranging from pork sausage with potato salad to beef sausage with potato salad. Vegetarians will have to seek liquid sustenance; thankfully there's always a doppelbock or two on draft.

This place is good. Really good. I'm hard pressed to think of a drinking establishment I like more on the peninsula, and I'm glad to have it as my local watering hole. If you're in town, drop by for a liter or two.

I have to say this is the best hidden gem in RC. Tucked in what looks like a place only you grandma would go it, and there are plenty that do (Make sure to say hi to the regulars on Saturday)is one of the best lunches and German beer selections you are going to find any where.

Lunch is served M-Sat and on Sat they have some sort of awesome special that Volker and/or Lothar whips up in the kitchen upstairs. Schnitzel, sauerbrauten, rouladen, pinklewurst, they are all delicious. Maryanne and the staff are sweet as can be and really make you fell at home. Go more than 2-3 times and they will know your name and what you like.

6-7 beers on tap, all German, all fresh as can be. The best German grocery store I've seen in CA and a new bar/bier garten coming soon. Volker has been hard at work.

Yes, I'm am friends and know these people now, but only from going there and seeing somebody do something so right. I can't help it I love this place.

Any fan of anything German must stop by here at some time.
