A german store with a bar and restaurant in the back, located in downtown Redwood City Visited on 2/19/11 for Kern River Brewing night as part of SF Beer Week.

The store was closed when we came (6PM on a Sat) so we entered around back. They have an outdoor biergarten that was not utilized at the time due to rainy weather. Inside they have a bar as well as a seating area with tables. Definitely has a german feel to it. A very family friendly place, lots of kids and families inside.

They only were serving 3 food items: A plate with pork chops, mashed potatoes and sauerkraut, an enormous pretzel served with mustard or cheese and salami, and french fries. We had the pretzel and the pork chop plate. Both were very good.

The bar has about 15 taps. It looks like they typically have about 10 excellent german selections and then a few guest taps. On this particular night all of the guest taps were taken over by Kern River. The service at the bar and the table was friendly and speedy.

I really enjoyed this place and will definitely be coming back in the future.

GHS is a local gem on the San Francisco Peninsula. It's a German store (everything from German toiletries to local German breads and baked goods, to German foodstuffs and tons of chocolates and snacks (Chipsfrisch!) and knick-knacks/kitsch). They always stock German holiday foods like Stollen and Ostereier, based on the season. They also put on a fantastic Oktoberfest on the first weekend of every September - NOT TO BE MISSED in the bay area.

As for the beer garden, it's indoor/outdoor, has 13 German/Austrian taps, 6 American craft taps, all incredible choices. They have typically 3 beers that are pretty much always there, which are Weihenstephaner Vitus Weizenbock (the king of all wheat beers), Köstritzer Schwarzbier, and Weltenburger Dunkel. Other than that everything rotates and the selection is always top-notch. In addition they have an amazing rare bottle selection at the bar, and a good bottle variety in the store.

The food is great too, at lunch they have things like Leberkäse, Bratwurst, monster Pretzels, and a fantastic ever-changing Flammkuchen (flatbread). But on Saturday lunchtime is the real food attraction, and it has made my entire family into regulars for Saturday lunch - family recipes from Grandpa Staudt! I'll rank off all the favorites I've seen lately: Sauerbraten (this last Sat), Jägerschnitzel, Wienerschnitzel, Tafelspitz, Goulasch, Königsburger Klöpse, Pflaumbraten, Schweinshaxen, man the list goes on.

In the evenings this place gets overrun with beer lovers, so they limit the kitchen offerings to usually one entrée choice and several sides (Obatzda, Pretzel, Baked Brie, Kartoffelpuffe, etc).

Every beer lover and Germanophile in Northern California absolutely must make a pilgrimage here at some point. Of course all the local German ex-pats regularly come here too, especially on Saturday lunch.

Not to be missed, period.

I stopped by based on BA reviews while in the area on business. From the front, it looks like a European knick knack shop. But they have a nice german bottle selection in back and an outstanding bar and beer garden hidden beyond that.I expected outstanding, authentic German beers which they have. But they also have fantastic American beers in tap and in the bottle. And they have a good selection of vintage and rare bottles. A great place that's well worth a visit!!!

We were headed back from lunch when my Branch Manager suggested a detour. Im in!
The infamous bar where the iphone 4 was "stolen" from a patron.

Atm- Huge indoor area with a large and long L shaped bar. The right side is the harder to find German imports with the bottle list in chalk above it. On the left is the craft side. A good outside area for mingling and eating.

Quality- Holy cow? How do they get these beers here? Thats just crazy? I mean. Ive seen some good German kegs before but this is another level really.

Service- Our girl was awesome. Quick, attentive, friendly and very happy to help suggest something for us to try.

Selection- An amazing array of german beers on tap with the correct glassware. What did I go with V-I-T-U-S!!! Hell to the yeah!!

Food- N/A

Value- Great pricing. Great beers.

GHS is one of the hidden gems on the peninsula for great beer & awesome food. Looks like a real German beer hall with outdoor seating & family-friendly indoor area, no TVs, just a simple classy looking place. The owners & servers are great people, friendly, knowledgeable & usually timely with orders. The real highlight is the selection of German weizens, bocks, pils, gose, etc. - the good classics you don't find on tap often plus a guest tap of good craft and occasional events with some rarer kegs. Traditional glassware is used, and there is a decent selection of bottles too. The food is also classic German - sausages, pretzels, mashed potatos - and it's all delicious and goes with the beer really well. Low key, almost never crowded, and unusual beer - I love this place!

Where to start, I love Gourmet Haus. It has been my favorite local bar for quite a while. Volker and Maryann the owners, are incredible people. They're always are going out of the way for their customers, and it shows. Between Volker, and Chris, they always have a bunch of great beer to choose from. You never need to worry about having the same beer they serve everywhere else. The food is fantastic, and very well priced. Try the special, you wont be disappointed. If you're ever in the area, it's an absolute must.
