(from a hollow-stemmed chalice)

Ožujsko Pivo

Appearance: Zagrebaèka Pivovara's Ožujsko Pivo pours a golden chartreuse, with a small head that, after dissipating, leaves a thin white cap.

Smell: The beer smells quite fresh, with a light floral hint. It's also quite yeasty, bready, and quite skunky.

Taste: I'm struggling to taste anything before the carbonation kicks in. I can taste the hops, and that's it.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation hits the tongue almost immediately, and gives a dry finish to the beer.

Overall: The fresh smell gave a hint of promise, but the beer tastes of nothing. One shouldn't expect much from this style, but this was crap.

Continuing my "hard to pronounce Eastern European" series of reviews, I picked up this little number at my local LCBO. This beer also served the purpose of adding Croatia to my list of countries I've had beer from.

Poured into a pilsner glass. Very pale golden, leaves about two inches of fluffy head that quickly recedes into a thin patchy ring. A few flecks of lacing here and there, but they don't last long. Typical.

Nose is very bland - Corn meal, faint apple, pale malts, honey, and a graininess that reminds me more of cooked pasta than fresh barley. Seriously, I smell cooked spaghetti noodles. What gives?

Very sweet, rich in corn syrupy goodness. And by that I mean it's boring as sin. This brew has successfully removed any and all aspects of beer that could be deemed offensive (i.e., hops, barley, flavor) and his put forward something that is more akin to a sweet fizzy soda than a beer. There's also an unpleasant taste of spaghetti in there (seriously, what is that??) that really makes me wonder what adjuncts went into this mess. Yawwwn.

Mild pinprick carbonation at first, followed by less of the same throughout. Thin, thin, thin.

These reviews serve a purpose, and that is to warn other folks of the bland, corporate contents found within these heavily accented cans. There really isn't anything here that distinguishes itself from any of the other swill out there. An adjunct lager that serves no real purpose other than to provide intoxication, which (amazingly) can also be achieved by drinking a beer with some semblance of flavor.

Though it may be Valentine's Day, I will never choo-choo-choose this beer, nor will I bee Friends with it either.

Pours a clear golden color with a quickly diminishing white head. Mild grassy aroma. Slightly bitter taste with some sweet malt. Light body with average carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. This is an ok euro-lager, nothing amazing but clean and refreshing.

Had this beer both on tap ('tocina') and in bottles ('boca') while in Croatia on vacation. In both forms we enjoyed it, probably the best beer on tap in the area we were staying in, though it hardly matches the best of the German lager and pilsner style beers!

Pale gold, perfectly clear, light head of foam that quickly dissipates. Grassy slightly sweet aroma, taste is clean and light in texture and more sweetness in the taste at first than of hops. It got the impression that in the bottle it is slightly drier in taste and more carbonated than on tap. I thought this a decent beer (if nothing special) and certainly does not have that awful metalic acid taste of many nasty cheap Euro-lagers, and we enjoyed it - especially in the warm weather enjoying the sun day and evening! Very easy to drink and cheap price in the back street bars - HRK15 or around $3 a half litre (Sept 2009)

Far preferable to the "Bavarian" beer imported from Holland that many of the bars serve along the Istrian Peninsular of Croatia! That really is bad and to be avoided.

500ml can, best before 19/2/2010. Lots of gold and red stuff going on all over the labeling, reminiscent of NASCAR finery.

This beer pours a clear medium golden hue, with a few fingers of soapy white head, which leaves a small ring of lace as it quickly recedes. It smells of sour bread and grassy/weedy hops. The taste is soft white grain, some breadiness, and mild acrid grassy hops. The carbonation is a bit below average, the body medium, and almost crisp, and it finishes dry, soft, with practically no aftertaste.

This is much better than the average Eastern Euro-lager in my experience. Not too much going on flavour-wise, but nothing off-putting either. Most favourite indeed.

Pours pale yellow with some white fizzy head. Neutral in aroma, a little creamy in mouthfeel.Grainy taste. Its drinkable actually, though somewhat astringent in the finish. I could drink this if I had no other beers about. Passable and serviceable for its style, as a pseudo-pilsner.

A: Thin gold with a 3/4 inch fuzzy head.

S: a bit like rakia and barely malty, weak smell.

T: soft and sweet. Pleasant while cold, with a malty finish.

M: Light carbonation sting, lighter bodied.

O: just fine, though becomes a lot less tasty as it warms.

Medium gold and very clear, tonnes of visible carbonation, very lively looking. Two finger foamy white head that settles steadily and leaves lacing.

Very grassy/grainy aroma, with a dose of spicy hop aroma.

Sweetness immediately hits the front of the tongue, corn like, but not overly sweet. Middle is dry and grain shows itself. Finish has a flash of citrus. Not bad, pretty clean. Feels like it is just a bit overboard on the adjunct side of things.

Light and fizzy body, but not to the point of being watery. Does seem to leave a little bit of a stickiness to the tongue.

Not bad, not great, pretty much what one expects when they hear Euro Pale Lager. A little less stickiness and sweetness would probably improve this one.

I drank a lot of these while I was visiting Croatia, and I was really excited to find them at a local liquor store. I don't remember loving this beer, but I did love Croatia. Let's see how it goes:

Pours a golden straw colour. Pretty standard. Not much head and lots of carbonation.

Smell is slightly grainy. Not much else in there.

Taste is surprisingly full and refreshing! Starts out sweet with some nice maltiness that fills the mouth. The carbonation is pretty intense at the beginning. It moves towards a slightly sour ending (mostly from the carbonation) with a little bitterness.

Overall this is a solid if fairly average brew. I don't know if I'd buy it again simply because of the price, but in Croatia it's cheap and satisfying after a hot summer day.

"Most Favourite Croatian Beer" it boasts on the can, can't argue with that. Best before on the bottom states 19.02.2009, 5.2% abv.

Pours out a clear bright light golden hue, tall spongy white head with impressive retention. Sticky coral lacing.

Some bread and metallic grain on the nose, light grassy hops, not bad so far.

The flavour is even better than most domestic macros. Both bready and grainy malt up front, sweet and crisp at the same time. Mild sweet finish and aftertaste, the light tart hops don't really kick in until the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is a full medium body, smooth with a bit of carbonation, once again impressive for the style.

Well I'll be jiggered, this stuff is a pleasant surprise, not bad at all, I can believe the most favourite Croatian beer claim after all. If only the domestic macros would model their lagers after this sort of thing...
