Picked this up while on a recent trip to Croatia. Dark brown mahogany pour with just a tinge of ruby. Two finger head with minimal retention and decent lacing. Earthy, malty sweet nose with hints of chocolate, metal and just a touch of black cherries. The taste follows suit with the chocolate and cherries becoming more prevalent. There's a slight smokiness to it and a subdued bitter hoppiness that nicely balances the sweetness. Dark lagers like this are typically quite sweet, but this was surprisingly drinkable with a nice dry, slightly bitter finish. This was by far the best beer we experienced while in Croatia. I'm glad I picked up several of these. (659 characters)

Picked up in Zagreb, the tall brown 1/2 liter bottle sports a red and gold label with an image of a mounted knight holding a sword and "Rex Croatorum" above. No ingredient info.

Poured a clear but very dark brown under a two finger tan head that fades fairly quickly, leaving a bit of lace. The nose is very sweet of candy caramel. The mouth is mildly prickly and fairly light. A candy sweet opening is followed by a good fairly strong dry hops bite. Nicely bitter and enticing. The aftertaste features a surge of spicey dry bitter. Nice. (539 characters)

Poured from a 0,5 L bottle into a chalice.

A- Very dark-brown, allmost black, with some dark-ruby coloring on a counter-light. Thick, not a long-lasting head. Very pleasant appearance.

S- Roasty and caramelly malts, a lot of fine grassy hops, some faintly present fruits.

T- A really well-built taste, finely ballanced, with pleasant bitter-caramel taste and a long aftertaste.

M- Moderate heavy, smooth, rich and almost chewy. Good carbonation.

O- Very fine dark lager, suitable for accompanying BBQed meat, as well as for a individual tasting. (550 characters)

We picked up a 0.5L bottle of Tomislav while on vacation in Croatia.

A: Pours a dark, coffee-brown. Medium-size head, light tan and fairly thick.

S: Smoke, chocolate, and bready malt up front, with some sweetness and dark fruit underneath.

T: Roasted malt flavors come on pretty strong at first--chocolate, lighter coffee, with dark fruit and even a little tartness coming out more as the beer warms. It's not as sweet as I expected, and it actually gets pretty dry on the finish.

M: Medium body, with smooth, mild carbonation. A little bit of alcohol comes out on the finish, but not bad for a 7.3% abv beer. Quite drinkable.

O: This was by far the best beer we had while in Croatia, but it more than holds its own on a wider scale, too. If this were available in the States, I would certainly buy it. I don't have a great sense of the style, but in any case, this is a tasty and drinkable dark, malty lager. (919 characters)

Brought this back from Croatia. I really dig it - nice dark brown with great head. Smell and taste are actually reminiscent of Belgian ales. Nothing too original or outgoing about the character of the beer, but very good. Drinks great for 7.3%, also. I'd drink this regularly if I could get is around NY (no way). Recommended. (326 characters)

50cl bottle, with a red and white label, depicting a horseman backed by vaguely psychadelic sweeping red lines.

Dark reddish mahogany colour, with a stable, milk-coffee coloured head. Carbonation forms in fine streams of miniscule bubbles around the edges. Very decent looking beer.

Slightly sour roasted characters on the nose, maybe just a hint of smokiness. Overall, rather roasted and even a bit oaky, but subdued.

Quite a robust palate, strong roasted charring bitterness on the front palate, with a late smoky, maybe sour character to it that leaves you feeling like all the moisture has been effloresced from your mouth. Mouthfeel is quite creamy and smooth, despite the later drought on the palate.

Not a bad beer, and a great deal different from the normal Croatian fare of pale, nondescript lagers. Hides its alcohol well, but only due to its other dominant charred flavours. Overall, it's interesting, but I'd say the Croats do a better example of a pale lager than a strong dark one... (1,009 characters)

Dark brown colour to black. Light brown, bubbly head about two fingers width high and with good retention. Thumb sized before reducing by half.

Dark roasted malts to start along with some sugar and good, earthy hops following this. There is a nutty aroma up next and a rich almost chocolate like smell towards the end. Some mild caramel and a hint of grain and alcohol.

Earthy malts, chocolate & a subtle alcohol kick and and nutty, sugar infused taste and a little burnt sugar behind this too, with a hint of caramel.

Medium body with good carbonation without overdoing it. There is a touch of fizz and a good lingering malty aftertaste that is back up by a slight bit of bitterness and goes down very well.

Definitely the best of the Croatian beers I tried whilst in the country, this beer was wonderfully made. A great beer and one I’d love to try again at some point in the future. (891 characters)
