Half-litre flip-top: best before May 2013, poured into a 'Gaffel Kolsch' glass three times @ home on 16 Nov 2012.

Typical Kolsch look: clean, clear and golden, large white head which tries to stay around on each pour (not your typical Kolsch really then, because the head usually buggers off before I've even seen it!).

The nose and taste are semi-sweet biscuity malty with hints of cereal and hops. No great flavours here, but when do you get those in a Kolsch? I don't dislike the style: there is nothing to dislike, I just wish the delicate flavours would grow some balls one day and surprise me!

This is just above your average Koln brew in my eyes, more for it's head than flavours to be honest.

Pours pale yellow with small head that fades. Aroma is light bready malt, hints of honey.

Taste is light sweet malt, grassy and slightly spicy hops, notes of fruit, dry finish and faint sweetish aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium with rather high carbonation.

Overall, very drinkable and pleasant beer.

On-draught @ Heller brewpub in Koln.

A: Pours the classic Kolsch 5cm white cap. Frothy and soft, with long-lasting head retention (~8 minutes). Leaves no lacing as it recedes.

Body is a clear somewhat vibrant yellow-copper.

Sm: Floral hops, a hint of graininess, Munich malts, buttery biscuit, and Noble hop grassiness. Pleasant and inviting, though indicative of a simple beer.

Aromatic intensity is average.

T&Mf: Overly buttery, lacking the fragile light body of superior, more refreshing Kolschbiere. Flavour profile is simple - Munich malts, floral hops. A bit of a sloppy build for a Kolsch, and imbalanced to boot.

O: Not as ridiculously drinkable and approachable as the best beers in the style, but pleasant enough. I'd sooner go for other locally brewed offerings when in Koln, but this is fine for 1 stange worth at 1.60 euro/glass.

.5L swing-top, best by May 2011.

Pours a filtered, apple-juice gold with a tight foamy head. Good retention.

Aroma has some apples, buttery malts and a mineral character.

Flavor is simple and smooth. Crackery malts combine with semi-fruity ale flavors. Bitterness is low, though there's some decent hop flavor-- leafy and grassy, mainly. Somewhat woody as well, but obviously not in a barrel sense. A touch grainy on the finish, and only moderately clean for a Kölsch. The mouthfeel is exceptionally fluffy and creamy for the style, with soft carbonation.

At only 4.5 percent ABV, this stuff is incredibly drinkable and relatively rewarding in the flavor department. Competes with all the old Cologne stand-bys despite being a relative newcomer on the scene. Plus the fact that it's "Bio" (German for organic) gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling inside, right?
