This is an excellent little deli and liquor store. As you walk in, all the wine and spirits are displayed in front of you. As you turn to the left you will see a nice little bar with some tables and the deli behind that. The beer selection is towards the back of the wine. I had a great lunch. It was a simple pastrami on rye, with sautéed mushrooms that was very tasty. After lunch, I browsed the beer section. They had a good selection of micros and imports in single and six packs. I got a bottle of Orkney's Dragonhead and Thomas Hardy's Ale. The prices were reasonable, and the staff friendly and helpful. The wine and spirits selection was no less impressive. It is good to see a place that spends the same amount of time and energy towards beer as they do wine. Highly recommended for a quick lunch stop, a nice evening out, or to just pick up a couple of good beers.

Really sort of a yuppie-ish wine store/deli. To me, there really isn't much here that you couldn't get cheaper somewhere else in town.

The wine selection is bigger/better than the beer selection. The beer selection is mostly Belgian stuff, etc. Nothing that you couldn't get from Friar Tuck's, a mile or two away.

The place is really about atmosphere. There are always a bunch of well-to-do looking people having wine and cheese and what I assume are extremely expensive hours douerves and apertifs. There are a bunch of little tables, and people sit there and laugh and eat.

So the setting is nice, if it's not too arrogant for you. But if it's selection you want, try elsewhere. The staff, though, is pretty helpful.

Verdict: Yuppie central for the Champaign wine community.

One of my favorite places for lunch as well as for high quality beer in Champaign, Sun Singer is a must for locals. Terrific (if somewhat basic) foods, excellent selection of beer (and even more so wines, if that's your gig), and a friendly and helpful staff, it's great and relaxing. They have decent bar space and, in warm weather, lots of outdoor tables for dining with a breeze.

The food is excellent, always delicious, and very fresh. Be forewarned--it consists of appetizers and sandwiches, but the food's quality and freshness are nothing short of outstanding. The variety of sandwiches is quite good--roast beef stacked high, with Au Jus; hot pastrami with spicy mustard; smoked salmon and brie; Reuben; Turkey Club; and much more, including excellent salads as sides. It's not a sit-down dinner place, but rather an upscale sandwich place with lots of terrific appetizers as well--cheeses, crab cakes, and more.

The beer selection is excellent--all bottles--in terms of selection and quality, primarily imports and micros. While the bar selection varies only by season, with bocks supplanting the kolschs and summer ales right now, the real gems are in the take-home section. There you'll find a very good selection of great micros--Ommegang, Allagash, Lagunitas, Hoppin' Frog, Avery, Victory, Heavy Seas, Dark Horse, Tommyknocker, and others--plus many great imports--Westmalle, Chimay, Thomas Hardy, Tucher, Erdinger, Weisenstephaner, Ayinger, and others. The selection is tremendous.

The food and beer prices are on the high end. The beer is not more than what one would pay elsewhere, just that what beers they carry are the more expensive ones. The food is expensive but customers get a lot with it, and the quality helps make up for the price. I also find the people to be excellent in customer service and unfailingly friendly. In addition, Sun Singer occasionally offers beer and wine tastings, usually on weekday evenings. Its fairly quiet but laid-back atmosphere makes it an enticing place to hang out, grab a cold one or two with a sandwich, chat, and leave with some great goodie selections for the fridge.

I can't say enough good about Sun Singer, one of my absolute favorites in Champaign.
