Back in November I spent a week in San Diego on business, and asked all week where I should go for good food or good times. I finally was recommended the Pizza Port by a local and he told me the Carlsbad location was the one to hit. Lucky for me on the way to the restaurant I discovered this gem of a bottle shop and it changed my life forever.

I walked in and met Shawn (Sean?) who I started asking about their beers. He informed me they had over 700 different bottles, and that you could drink there, or take them with you. This is a concept I'd never heard of, but really intrigued by. Shawn first recommended a local beer called the Lost Abbey Inferno and this was one of the best beers I had ever had. After this I kept asking for recommendations all night and Shawn was awesome! He never once lead me astray and while there I discovered Duchess de Bourgogne, St. Bernardus Abt 12, and a host of other really great beers.

Shawn also got us pizza from next door delivered to the bottle shop and we ate out back.

All in all this is a place and experience I will never forget. I got introduced to Belgian beers, Shawn was extremely attentive and to date the most knowledgeable beer clerk I've ever met, and glassware they had on hand was all perfect for every beer that any of us selected.

Oh and one more bonus, they have beer magazines everywhere to read while you drink your beer! I can't recommend this place highly enough, and hope to go back one day.

This would be a great Bottle shop on its own, but combine it with the Pizza Port located next door and it is a match made in heaven. Great selection, and awesome outside area to enjoy a few brews with your food from next door.

I don't know what I would do without this place. My man Chris has never let me down on a good recommendation no matter what I was looking to get into. A great selection in a great spot. First lead into Stillwater, Jolly Pumpkin, Pliny, Logsdon, Mad River, Knee Deep, the selection is enormous!

I decided to walk over here while we were waiting for our pizza next door. Atmosphere was decent, one or two people milling around looking at bottles but other than that it is a typical bottle shop. Quality was pretty good. I didn't see any out of date bottles and they had some nice glasses but the space seemed a little rough around the edges. Service was good, typical "do you need any help," but I was just browsing. Selection was solid, lots of different beers from all over the world with plenty of local options represented as well. I did see a few bottles I would be interested in but the prices were a bit high for my tastes so I passed on them. Overall a nice bottle shop, definitely worth the stop if you are going to Pizza Port but I wouldn't go out of my way to stop in.

I had to check out the Port bottle shop since I was at the Carlsbad location. It was much different than I was expecting. It's basically a room of coolers with beer in them and some glassware for purchase. I believe it connects outside to a patio area. Pretty bare bones in my opinion. The quality of the beers were good but I saw some old bottles that have probably been around for quite some time. Service was average at best. The selection they have is pretty impressive however, with a good number of beers I have never seen anywhere else. Prices are reasonable for what you are getting. My only complaint is that after handling bottles from multiple coolers, my hands smelled of mildew as if there is some sort of issue going on with moisture inside the units.

It seems Pizza Port had some extra space and decided to throw a half-dozen second hand coolers together and form a bottle shop. Then they threw a couple pieces of plywood over some sawhorses and got some glassware together so you could enjoy a bottle on the premises. Well, at least there's no corkage fee. The selection is fairly extensive, although lot of space is taken up by grocery store beers and there really aren't too many rarities. I would consider the prices reasonable because they are the price I am used to in Washington but then I also expected slightly cheaper in California. The kid behind the counter didn't move a muscle or even try to greet me at the door but was friendly enough as I checked out. I don't know if there are better bottle shops in the area but it seems better to head next door and get a pint and leave the bottle shopping for somewhere else.

Massively disappointing compared to my expectations. Selection was pretty good, but nothing that would blow a beer geek away. Of the three bottle shops I hit on our vacation this was third best, and it was no contest.

I guess this is a great place for a local bottle shop, or if you don't get down the highway to San Diego or something. But there were no rarities even of the Port/LA family, unless they are hidden away for those who know the (in my visit, not at all helpful) staff.

Glad I did not go just for the bottle shop here.
