Back in November I spent a week in San Diego on business, and asked all week where I should go for good food or good times. I finally was recommended the Pizza Port by a local and he told me the Carlsbad location was the one to hit. Lucky for me on the way to the restaurant I discovered this gem of a bottle shop and it changed my life forever.

I walked in and met Shawn (Sean?) who I started asking about their beers. He informed me they had over 700 different bottles, and that you could drink there, or take them with you. This is a concept I'd never heard of, but really intrigued by. Shawn first recommended a local beer called the Lost Abbey Inferno and this was one of the best beers I had ever had. After this I kept asking for recommendations all night and Shawn was awesome! He never once lead me astray and while there I discovered Duchess de Bourgogne, St. Bernardus Abt 12, and a host of other really great beers.

Shawn also got us pizza from next door delivered to the bottle shop and we ate out back.

All in all this is a place and experience I will never forget. I got introduced to Belgian beers, Shawn was extremely attentive and to date the most knowledgeable beer clerk I've ever met, and glassware they had on hand was all perfect for every beer that any of us selected.

Oh and one more bonus, they have beer magazines everywhere to read while you drink your beer! I can't recommend this place highly enough, and hope to go back one day.

It's always nice to have a bottle shop around. No, it's not the most beautiful place, nor does it feature the largest selection, but they stock an impressively eclectic collection of good beers for so small a place, and enjoying a bottle right there is a plus.

As mentioned in another review, Texas Liquors, just down the street, does have a better selection. Love them too, but check the bottling date if you're buying something that is date-sensitive. (456 characters)

I would agree almost word for word with Bfarr's review three years ago. If you're at the Pizza Port and want to pick up something to take home, it would be the logical and convenient place to go. Otherwise I'd suggest Texas Liquors a few blocks east for a vastly better selection and about the same issues with old bottles.

Wide array of southern California breweries, though not a lot of depth. I did not find much of interest to me, even though they are so close to the Vista and Escondido brewing centers. But it's worth a visit if you're having a taste in the next-door beer garden. Though that suffers by comparison with the expansive outdoor spaces at Bagby just up the coast highway in Oceanside. (704 characters)

This would be a great Bottle shop on its own, but combine it with the Pizza Port located next door and it is a match made in heaven. Great selection, and awesome outside area to enjoy a few brews with your food from next door. (229 characters)
