Served on tap into a sampler mason jar style glass at the brewery. Poured a hazy yellow with a half finger pure white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, and slight cloves. The flavor was of sweet malt, wheat, banana, and cloves. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty nice Hefeweizen. That being said, it wasn't that awe-inspring, but was still good. It was a little lighter on carbonation than I like in my Hefe's, but it isn't a deal breaker. I would have this one again given the opportunity...

The aroma was like putting your head in a dirty jock locker. The taste was something I would imagine would go along with the smell. I made two attempts to drink this beer, and failed both times.

golden amber color was evident right away. A nice solid layer of white foam, maybe to a half an inch came up over the top, but then settled down far too qucikly, leaving behind nothing more then a slight layer of film across the top,

The aroma was good, very nice for the style, with a good sense of wheat, hints of banana and clove and a slight touches of an almost peach like smell. More solid in through the taste. Rolls across the tongue with a good amount of banana and peach flavors, hints of a light grass flavor and light grains then ruling the day on this one. Smooth delivery and excellent carbonation

Reviewed from notes taken during 3rd Anniversary Party.

This is the Old World Hefeweizen run through the "hopinator" filter containing whole cone Citra hops and vanilla beans.

A: Pours a hazy yellow with a faint white head.

S: Nose is estery banana, clove spice, wheaty and yeasty with just a slight vanilla component. Not much Citra hop aroma at all.

T: Follows the nose. Again, no distinctly Citra notes. Just running the beer through the filter didn't really pick up much.

M: Somewhat thin, decent carb.

O: Dissappointed with this. Perhaps if there was more contact time with the hops this could be much better.

Great to see a brewery in Fullerton doing so well. Happy to sample their wares.

Cloudy golden amber with a thin foamy white head. Low carbonation, maybe I let it warm a bit too much already?

Typical banana clove bubblegum aroma. Nice but not a whole lot extra to it. Missing the big yeast freshness to it of the better examples.

Nice refreshing taste. Missing some carbonation but getting the fullness from the yeast without being too sharp. Nice wheat malt lightness.

Probably a better beer than the score shows but the lack of carbonation has a big impact on this style. Would love to get to the brewery if I get the chance.

Pours cloudy and golden. Small white head that didn't last long.

Smells of yeast, wheat, and banana. Slight hint of spices.

Tastes like an above average geman hefeweizen. Has the spicy character and slight hint of banana. I usually like a little more of the banana and clove taste in my german hefe.

Mouthfeel is pretty typical. Medium body and carbonation.

Overall I like this beer and would have it again. Not as good as some of the hefewiezens I've had from germany but pretty good for the west coast.

A: Pours golden color with white head. Head is thin and does not linger long at all. Semi-hazy body that is void of carbonation bubbles.

S: Get a good nose of clove and spice. Some traces of earthy character although not that much. Really your typical hefe aroma.

T/M: Very thin mouth feel with some classic hefe flavors. Good amount of clove and spice in the taste. Other than that I am rather disappointed in the flavor here. Not very much going on and rather bland.

D: Easy to drink although this is not really a beer I would be seeking out again.

Poured the 22 into a tall pilsner glass releasing a creamy long lasting head. Below sits something a little darker than a traditional Hefe. With that aside the color is pleasent to look at knowing what comes next. The aroma shines with clove, banana and Hallertauer hops. The taste is comparable to the aroma with the addition of a very mild ginger a cinnamon note. The mouthfeel is long lasting and silky with good flavor all around. A crisp refreshing beer you will enjoy.

At first glance the bottle (pt.) grabbed my attention.
The Old World propaganda caught my eye and interest was ignited.
The next kudos was the California label, i am biased since i reside in L.A., and thats where the kudos stop.

First off, the Hefeweizen did have a beautiful golden amber color but not cloudy like others suggest.

The head was creamy white but did not last long and the smell was never really present.

The drinkability was admirable but only because the carbonation was miniscule.

Not a bad Brew but i was expecting a little more Old World treatment into this Hef-Lite.

A: poured into a my tall Stella glass golden cloudy color. thick head. looks good.

S: lots of banana rush out at you. smells delicious.

T: hints of spice, lots of banana flavor slight subtle citrus flavor adds to the complexity. I'm impressed right off.

M: good rich texture.

D: the most drinkable beer. dry finish and light carbonation make me thirsty when im done. having the great side effect of making me thirsty for another sip! went way to fast.

On-tap at Bootlegger's

A: The pour is a hazy golden color with a fluffy white head and plenty of carbonation.

S: From the first sip, I can tell this is not a hefeweizen. This is (yet another) typical pale wheat ale. With the name, I figured I was going to be getting a German style Hefeweizen, not the usual citrusy, wheat beer.

T: Like the nose, it's just more of the same: lemon, orange, and wheat. Very subtle banana, but no clove or any of the other usual suspects.

M: A light-medium body with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: It's an easy drinking, light ale, but it's not what I was expecting to get. A let down in a sense, but still a pretty easy drinking beer.

Nose is yeasty, wheaty. Smells good, very appealin.

Pours hazy yellow with moderate head and lots of yeast in the bottle. Looks pretty good.

Nice spicy wheatiness, mellow yestiness, soft malt. Soft pepper, clove. Tastes pretty good.

Pretty good German Hefe. I'd definitely try more Biotlegger beers.

Draft to pint
12 oz

concourse Bowling, Fullerton, CA

App- A nice hazy orange with some medium yellow highlights. A fluffy two finger head and some whispy lines of cling to it.

Smell- Seemed a bit thicker to me on the aromatics. More dense, spice, bubblegum, banana and some other notes in there as well.

Taste- It didn’t seem to me to be too heavy on the citrus notes some have mentioned. It was a Hefe IMO but just seemed a tad thick. Nicer wheat with a smallish banana and bubblegum.

Mouth- As with the taste and nose being a bit thick, the feel was about the same. Medium bodied and medium carbonation.

Drink- I liked it. A little more dense, A good balance of flavors and its not gonna be too heavy or too light.

Poured from a bomber into a shaker pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy, light amber color with over one finger of diminishing white foam head. Scant lacing remains on the glass.

S: Strong cloves and drying carbonic acid stand out amongst a typical field of qualities such as banana and bready yeast.

T: Begins off-dry, with wheat and balanced yeast phenolics amidst bright, surging acidity. Flavors become drier and less intense in the middle, providing significant refreshment through the mellow finish. The finish also features banana and more wheat, but not bitterness.

M: Thin viscosity, palpable acidity is cut somewhat by coating wheat, with moderate carbonation. The overall effect is less than the sum of the parts, feeling a bit limp and lifeless.

D/O: Here is a locally-brewed Southern California hefeweizen that is a consistent performer, delivering approachable but authentic qualities. Flavor, texture, and smell could connect more seamlessly, as in the archetypal Bavarian standards of the style. When one considers just how few California-based production breweries attempt this style, the bottled version of this beer really becomes a significant contribution to the marketplace selection available in Orange County.

Decent standard wheat with hint of esters.

Very clear amber color in the glass, no hint of yeast. Malt tastes of orange and not much of the usual clove and banana of German-style Hefeweizens. Nice sharpness and fruitier as it warms up. Not much evidence of hops in keeping with the style, but well-balanced. Thinner body than many Hefes. Still, you wouldn't mistake it for an American wheat.

Very clean and likable brew. Goes down pleasantly without attracting too much attention. A nice quaffable alternative to the extremes of wheat beer styles.

This review is a long time coming as I’ve been drinking 'Old World' repeatedly for over a year now. As good a time as any.

Into a Paulaner tulip, pours a white foamy head atop an orange, golden body. Dancing bubbles as I swirl, head pouring big initially but nary to return.

Aromas of honey, bananas, and cloves. Wonderful bouquet, though lower in intensity.

Flavors foremost of wheat with strong hints of dried bananas, cloves, and this nice, bready taste that adds substantial body and complexity.

Thinner mouthfeel, even as I swish.

Overall, this nearly stands (on its heels at least) with Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier - I love 'Old World' that much. A couple of components outside of the flavoring could improve (e.g., appearance and aroma intensity) and even the flavor itself could use a little more refinement, but the complexity is so rich and tasty that I could drink at least two to three per sitting.

Pours cloudy golden straw, a little dark for my preference, but an excellent huge white head forms and takes for ever to dissipate, leaving random chunky lacing.

Smells of tangy lemon, wheat, yeast, with a light spicy/peppery hint at the end.

Taste is smooth, a bit of wheat, a light banana fruitiness, and a yeasty tang, which lingers for some time.

Texture has a little bit more body than I am looking for, but it remains very smooth and easy to drink.

Having just reviewed the Wiehanstephaner, I kind of knew what I was looking for in a wheat beer. While this beer is extremely good, it seems like each aspect is missing just a tiny little something. Still a great beer.

A: Deep golden yellow, haze present throughout body. Thin white head with medium retention. Light carbonation present.

S: Strong smell of banana, subtle notes of clove, bread, and honey.

T: Heavy on the banana, true to this style. Sweet taste throughout, aftertaste lingers, remains sweet.

M: Creamy. I loved how this wets the entire palate an coats the mouth. Not heavy or chewy, had medium body but very wet.

O: Enjoyable medium bodied Hefeweizen. Flavors true to the style. Really enjoyed how sweet it was and how the lingering flavor and mouthfeel was.

Served draught into tall pint. Allowed for development and funneling of smells, appreciation of the deep color and appearance.

On tap at Bier Academy in Canyon Country, CA.

Pours a murky honey orange with a bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of wheat, spices, yeast, and banana aromas. Taste is very nice with wheat, spices, yeast, bubblegum, and a strong banana flavor. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good hefeweizen that is quite tasty and easy to drink.

Poured 22 oz bottle into Pilsner glass 10-19-11

A: Poured a thick, creamy white head. Didn't dome on top. About three and a half finger width, long retention with considerable spotted lacing. Light nutty brown, or darker orange coloration, moderate carbonation and very cloudy.

S: Hoppy with a fruity, banana aroma behind the initial bite. A bit cloyingly sweet.

T: Very much a banana influence. The sweetness in the smell wasn't far off. Slight bitter aftertaste, but not very complex overall taste-wise.

M: A bit thick at first sip, but inconsistent in the mouth.

O: Too sweet for my taste, at least for regular consumption. Might be a nice summer beer. Gets better mid-glass, but nothing phenomenal.

On-tap at Heroe's, and in celebration to my 23rd birthday. On to the beer:

Darker than the usual hefewiezen, more of an unfiltered honey brown color. In this beer, there's some lemon flavor and less phenolic activty (clove and banana) compared to the German counterparts, but still enough to make it a German styled hefeweizen. Touches of ginger snaps break into the overal flavor at times. A good effort overall.

Update 11/8/09: Not quite the same goodness when I first tasted it. But the good news for hefe fans like myself is they've changed the yeast strain to this beer, allowing more banana flavor. It's good, just not the same "oh yum!" experiance when I had it for the first time.

22 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Apperance: Pours a hazy apricot-brown color, with a very light white head.

Smell: Unlike most other American Hefeweizens, this actually smells a bit like one. Light, but with some sweetness and cloves.

Taste: Has a somewhat grainy wheat flavor, but with banana, cloves, and a slight bit of breadyness present. Some bitterness (and chemical taste?) in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Very smooth with light carbonation.

Drinkability: Pretty drinkable, with a quite moderate ABV.

A decent attempt at a Hefeweizen. It gets some of the flavors right, but overall it just doesn't really appeal to me (and somewhat misses the mark).

You know I just think beer drinkers are just so much into hops these days. This is a good beer! It's a hefweizen! It's not supposed to be hoppy! It's supposed to have banana overtones. It's supposed to be hazy. It's supposed to be easy to drink it's not supposed to be strong. Yes the head could last longer and there could be better lacing. This beer tastes like wheat as it should. It's not citrussy like so many California hefweizen are. I really like it and wish it were available in northern California. Tasty on a hot Sacramento evening.

Pours 2 fingers of off-white head. Good retention. Good lace. Color is a hazed golden orange.

Aroma: Typical hefe with some creaminess to it. Cloves, bananas, and orange peel. Also some yeast.

Taste: Similar to the nose but has more of a spice to it. Big clove flavor.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. Light bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry, but clean.

Overall, a simple hefe, but a little over spiced. Average drinkability.3

22oz bottle poured into pint glass - thanks to gcphilli

Pours a clouded dirty orange color with a fluffy white head. Retains well with some filmy lacing on the glass.

Scents of clove and spice, wheat, banana and fruit sweetness.

A decent note of spice and floral hops right up front. Some wheat and bready notes, slight sweetness with caramel and fruit. Banana notes with some clove and citrus. Finishes a bit sweet and dry.

Medium bodied, a bit creamy, pretty smooth on the tongue. A pretty drinkable easy going beer, but not particularly special.
