A- Deep brown, a ruby red on the edges, little head and rim retention last long.

S- Very smokey up front, with a bbq like smell, then the coffee and malt flood in finally a hint of pepper is at the end. Pretty good, like a stout that was just bbq.

T- A lot of coffee up front, taste simuilar to firestone's coffee porter. Deep chocolate/malt flavor. At the end is a herby/bitter/spicy. The chipotle blends with the hops, which is great, IPAs go great with something spicy. After taking some more sips the chipotle black pepper taste can be found throughout the whole taste very light. After a few sips there a very mild burn on the back of the tounge.

M- Chewy from the coffee, bit grainy too from the coffee and the pepper. Good carbonation.

D- I'll admit I have fall in love with add a dash of chipotle to beers. I've brewed my own chipotle ale turned out great. Its a great twist on a all ready good porter (or maybe its masking some of its bad traits) who knows... I def plan to drink more of this, although after one you might be running a risk of heart burn.

Dark brown to black beer without head. My nose is greeted with pleasing milk chocolate and coffee aromas immediately. Also, a certain milky creaminess and a little smoke. Very chocolaty taste, I wouldn't put this in the chile beer catagory at all, even though chiles are used. Would we put Wrath of Pecant in the plantain catagory just because they are used? You know what I mean. There isn't much chile or spice to this beer at all, maybe a hint of chipotle late in the swallow. It could much easier pass as a coffee stout. It's clean with quite active carbonation. It's enjoyable, but you know what not to expect.

The Beers of California

#53

Bottle Date: None

A: That pitch black stout look is going on with a faint head of khaki foam which fades to a bed of bubbles.

S: The coffee and roasted, toasted malt is there. No pepper bite is detectable. Overall the nose is smooth with some cocoa and espresso but was hoping for some spice also.

T: The coffee is there but somewhat muted. Good roasted malt presence along with caramel and brown sugar sweetness. Minimal chipotle burn. There is a nice bitterness which contrasts the dark sweetness.

M: Smooth and ample with good carbonation. Trace lacing on the glass.

O: As someone who loves spice and coffee this beer ultimately let me down with only moderate coffee notes and non-existent spice presence.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this growler.

The beer pours a dark reddish-brown color with a white head. The aroma is very nice. I get chocolate, coffee, smoke and roasted malt. The flavor is roasted malt, chocolate and smoke. Medium to thick mouthfeel and low carbonation. I don't get a lot of pepper flavor or aroma, but I get the smoke from the chipotles. Very nice beer.

Bottle

Dark black with a thick brown head that is quite persistent. Moderate lacing left down the glass. Perfect for the style.

Subdued aroma, even after warming, of roasted malt, some coffee, and a somewhat nondescript sharpness I'm attributing to the chipotle.

A simple, balanced stout with typical roasted malt and some coffee flavors and a sharpness on the finish. I don't get much chipotle flavor, just a somewhat bland, quick spice warmth.

Somewhat thin mouthfeel for a stout and the chili sharpness isn't particularly welcome or married well with the other flavors.

A simple though uninteresting chili stout--nothing special, but nothing unpleasant either.

Mostly dark brown color, a little lighter than usual for craft stouts these days, but not ugly in any sense. Not much head, a thin brown (lighter) ring of head about 3/8" thick, doesn't retain well, not much for lacing. I guess that's the chipotle working.

Aroma of chocolate and coffee, I didn't pick up on the chipotle in the aroma, but the aroma was still inviting for what it was. Fractional smoke element to it.

Taste, alright, there's a little bit of chipotle. Bitter astringency, but not in a bad way. Mouthfeel was a little thin. Starting to have the phrase 'run of the mill' run through my head.

Ashy at times. Didn't really perceive any heat of flavor for the most part of my drinking experience related to the peppers. Yes, it does grow as the beer warms, but I think Stone has a cheaper alternative (smoked porter w/ chipotle) that is easier to find and better quality. Good enough, but won't be stocking up on these.

I loves me muh stouts and porters!

A- Poured into a pint glass. Dark fudgy color and a milk chocolate head about a fingers width. The head dissipated almost too rapidly and the lacing was slippery to smooth. I enjoy looking at a deep rich ale in ambient lighting :)

S- A medium scent is evident with malts, coffee. As much as I hyped this ale up I was expecting something deeper =/

T- Smokey Roasted Malt, A piquant coffee/dark chocolate taste settles on the palate briefly, but this bottoms out quickly with the bold flavor. HOWEVER... The chipotle finishes quite well from the start to finish... but especially on the finish! I have had my share of chipotle beers and this one takes the cake. The nice subtle spice that tickles and plays with your tongue in the end definitely puts a smile on your face! Kudos bootleggers for pulling off what many chipotle beers can not!

MF- Scrumptious semi-thick stout, kinda syrupy and it sticks to your mouth for a bit. It is a deep beer with medium carbonation. This will go great with bbq or a greasy mexican fusion breakfast plate :P

O- I like my stouts and porters very much, this one is a very filling and bold stout. I don't know about breaking the wallet for one, but if you can afford it go for it! Yum yum YUM!

Bottle included as an extra from vacax - thanks!

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger tan head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with good amounts of cocoa powder. Also present are hints of chiles and milder hints of vanilla that intensify as the beer warms.

Tastes similar to how it smells, although with more influence from the chiles. Mild roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by slightly sweetened cocoa powder. Midway through the sip mild amounts of chile flavors and heavier amounts of heat enter into things. The heat continues through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a nice thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.

Overall this wasn't the best example of a chile stout I've had however it didn't skimp on the chile flavor like some others I've had either. Worth a shot.

Pitch black with a nice 1cm khaki head with average retention and little to no lacing.

The nose is probably the best part of this beer. Nice notes of bitter chocolate, espresso and a touch of smoke from the chipotles. Also a bit earthy and leathery.

Flavor is pretty good but I had higher hopes for it. It follows the nose pretty well with pretty good bitter chocolate and coffee notes. But really lacking smokiness and heat from the chipotles I was hoping for and expecting. Pleasant mild espresso aftertaste.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side for the style which is obviously due to the use of coffee. Low carbonation.

Overall it's a good beer and real easy to drink. I was just disappointed by the lack of chipotle representation in the flavor and the mouthfeel.

Picked up a bomber while in El Segundo. I opened the bottle after dinner and it makes a fine dessert beer. It's by no means sweet, but there's a medium, thicker body and tasty cocoa notes. I only get the slighted hint of chipotle and heat once the beer warms to cellar temperature, but it's a nice touch. This is definitely not a beer to drink too cold, the subtle flavors are totally lost. I'm not getting any noticeable coffee, but the smooth chocolate liquor taste, balanced by a mild roast will ease your mind and please your palate. Give this a try if you find it.

Thanks to one of those wonderful California BAs for this one. Taken from notes.

Pours dark brown with minimal head.

Smells of some sweetness, a little chili, earth, and... Chlorine?

Tastes of sweet peppers, some chocolate. We--balanced with a pleasant slight burn in the finish.

Good carbonation, but a little lighter than expected.

This one is pretty good, actually. Interesting and worth a second look. Hopefully that Chlorine smell was just my imagination.

Served on tap at the Verdugo Bar. This beer came out black as night with only a trace of head that quickly fizzled away. A little disappointing, until I got a whiff. The nose was a big hit of coffee. I don't particularly care for coffee by itself but I love me some coffee in my beer. This one did not disappoint. The taste was more of the same, fresh ground coffee perfectly blended with roasted malts and a touch of spice at the end. The chipotle takes a back seat in this beer, with the coffee up front and then a nice touch of spice in the finish, complimenting the beer instead of overpowering it. The mouthfeel is very smooth with a medium body. I could have had a few of these if the Verdugo didn't have so many great beers to try. Overall this was an excellent beer, well balanced and extremely drinkable. I'll be looking for more of these in the future.

Poured into a snifter. Pours a deep black with a tan head that dissapated to a thin ring. Very little lacing.

Aroma is the best part. Lots of stouty goodness with a bit of coffee. Smells like a good chocolate mocha actually. Smells great.

Taste falls short a bit. It's just kinda stouty and chocolaty. Can't really taste the chipotle. And it's lacking flavor and busy in the finish. It doesn't taste bad it's just plain for what it's claiming to be.

Mouthfeel is a little thin for a stout of this kind. Nice carb.

Overall an ok beer. Not bad. Worth a try. Might have it again

22 oz. bomber poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Pours a deep brown/black in color with a light mocha cap. Retention is a bit brief yet holds a surface film and drops some lace. Rather glassy in the end.

Nose of chocolate, cocoa and some peppered coffee. To call this a chile beer is a bit of a stretch though. Roasted malt dominates while any pepper notes are subtle and smoky in nature and well integrated.

Flavor continues upon the coffee parade and offers a lingering hint of dry chocolate. Pepper spice notes are absent in the flavor realm.

Overall a light and chocolatey stout, moderate on the coffee and light on the spice.

Viewed as a Sweet Stout vs. this Chile nonsense...Yet still quite marginal overall. Bottom line, yet another overpriced wannabe. Check please...
