On tap and Bootlegger's tasting room and in a growler.

Pours a crystal clear brown. Off-white head, medium retention.

Toasted bread. Bread crusts. Toffee. All malt.

Reminiscent of the taste. Lots of melanoidins to dig through. Toasted biscuits, cereal, and maple syrup.

Light-medium.

Thanks to Bootlegger's for making a style that is rarely seen here in CA. The 3.2% will probably keep it off the shelves, but I could drink this stuff all day.

Draft at the brewery.

Pours a hazy chocolate brown color with golden apricot edges and a half finger off white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Minimal spots of lace left behind.

Bland aroma with an earthy, soily character along with some faint malt.  Hard to detect much else.  Subtle hints of nut, caramel and chocolate.

Medium bodied with tight carbonation and a lot of spicy hops.  Earthy with dry pine needle flavor and faint maltiness. Very earthy, dry and one dimensional. Not very complex with a really weak malt presence and too much carbonation.

Overall this beer was really bad. I'm not sure if the keg had gone back or what went wrong but my experience with this beer was completely opposite of the other reviews so far.

On tap at Bootlegger's.

A: Dark amber with a creamy two finger head. Good retention and little lacing.

S: Toasted bread and biscuit wafts from the glass. The beer has just a little caramel as well as a nutty quality and a light roast.

T: The flavor has a little more caramel than the aroma and there's a strong biscuit presence. Toasted bread blends with a grainy quality and a faint nuttiness.

M: Upper light in body with good carbonation.

Overall: A good effort at a style that is brewed too infrequently.

Of the 1870+ beers I have tried, this is the beer that broke my English Dark Mild Ale cherry. Got a $11 growler off the source, here it goes:

Poured was a dark copper color with a nice head. Bready, slightly malty, roasty initially, finished a bit watery and toasty.

Flavorful without being heavy-handed for the minuscule ABV, I polished off the growler in less than 2 hours without feeling much anything.

Exactly what I expected before I tried this style of beer. Sessionable yet flavorful beer, good for mindless and compulsive drinking without blacking out or having a raging hangover.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours brown with a small white head, no real retention, no lace.

S: Toffee, sweet molasses, malt aromas.

T: Great English style malt (molasses and toffee) with a mild roast. Hops to style are light, very good flavour.

M: Medium-bodied, fizzy and thin on the finish, granted it's 3.2%.

D: Why don't more brewers make this style? Delicious, easy drinking, very low alcohol, Mild where have you been?

On-tap at Bootlegger's

A: The pour is a dark amber color with an initially thick off-white head. This dies down to a thin layer on top and some mild lacing.

S: An incredibly toasty aroma with a bit of molasses, toffee, and even some coffee. On top of all those sugary descriptors, there's a really bready character to the beer.

T: The toasty, biscuity, bready notes dominate the flavor and make for a really hearty beer despite the low ABV. A slight English hop bitterness and some mild toffee and coffee flavors.

M: A medium body with an incredibly smooth and creamy feel on the tongue.

D: I sometimes find myself falling into the trap of the big beers, so coming across a really nice low ABV beer like this is always nice. This is one you could drink all day, and that's sort of the point.

Dark milds were non-existant in my area until Bootlegger's came up with Prohibition Mild to celebrate the 77th anniversarty of the repeal of Prohibition. Despite more than 1,500 different beers tried, I have never had a mild ale, pale or dark. So...on to the beer:

Amber brown color, head forms fine on top, but drops to a thin ring. Some carbonation bubbles race through the body. Very, very toasty in the nose. Lots of sweet bread crust, you could make bread out of it. Also a light hop character, and semi-sweet chocolate. There is surpringly a lot of aroma for such a low ABV.

There is much more flavor in this beer than I would have thought. Waves of sweet bread crust are the dominate flavor. Make that toasted bread crust. I'm also getting very subtle hints of cocoa. The body is very light with a little bit of a seltzery feel...I'm guessing that's standard among dark milds. Perhaps as expected, it goes down really easy.

Only 3.2% ABV? This has got quite a flavor for being so small. Nice to see Aaron make a beer style that's very rare stateside.

On-tap at Bootlegger's Prohibition Party. Pours an amber-red color, lightly cloudy with a small tan head. Aroma is decidedly but restrainedly malty with toast, biscuit, light roast, caramel malt, and mild hopping. Tastes of biscuit and roasty malts, finish has nutty and chocolatey malts and crisp mildly spicy hop character. Medium bodied with a moderate to low easy drinking bubbliness. This is a very tasty brew, nice toasty malts and everything, easy drinking and oh so easy to drink, especially at the low alcohol point. A couple pints of this, no problem! Very enjoyable.
