On tap at the Bootlegger's 5th Anniversary Celebration held at The Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA.

Billed as a sour ale refermented with olallieberry and acai.

Pours a murky orange-red with a foamy bone head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is sour and tart berry, acai, and acidic aromas. Taste is much the same with subdued sour fruit flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty and refreshing.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark red and purple with amber edges. Very little, almost non-existent head, and small specks of residue left on the glass. Unimpressive first impression.

An impressively pungent and powerful aroma. There are huge, sweet berry notes (blackberry, raspberry, and what I can only assume are olallieberry and acai berries). There's also a huge stinging sour scent throughout. Quite nice.

Initial stinging sourness that lingers throughout the swallow. This is very acidic and has quite a strong vinegar flavor as well, though that's acceptable because it's balanced just as heavily by loads and loads of sweet, fresh, plump, juicy berry flavors.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation. I would like this a little thinner and a bit more bubbly.

One of my favorites from Churchill's 2011 Sour Fest. I would love to try this again.

@Churchills Sourfest 2011

App- a darker glowing orange/sunset purple with some yellow and amber mixed in. A bit lacking in any sense of head, fade or cling. Very minimal bubbles.

Smell- I got two things on this. Sour and Berries. It was a ton of berry mind you and rightfully so with that name. I am hoping that Olilliaberry is similar to a blackberry because thats the berry I get with the backing sour.

Taste- This was a very acidic lambic with a ton of fruit behind it. A very well balanced lambic at that with some tartness and a little bit of barrel character. The Acai is awesome in this.

Mouth- A medium carbonation with a medium carbonation level. A great tart residual berry flavor.

Drink- For an American lambic this beer was very good. Sharp tartness and berry sweetness. It was crisp and refreshing at the end of the day. Great way to finish off Sourfest.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this growler.

The beer pours a hazy pinkish-red color with a white head. Strange looking beer. The aroma is vinegar with some fruit notes. Not sure what the fruit is, but I guess it is ollaliberry and acai (neither of which I have ever smelled or tasted). The falvor is very tart berries and is very dry. Juicy and fruity. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very drinkable. Very good.

On-tap at the source. On to the beer:

It looks like berry punch in color, sans head. There's some tartness in the nose, not super fragrant, with a little of the fruit coming through. I've never tasted an olallieberry to know what it tastes like, but I did enjot the way this beer tasted. Acidic all the way with a pleasant sour flavor, the fruit comes into play in the middle of the note, then it closes with a powerful acidity and lemon tartness. As usual, quite the enjoyable tart fruit beer from Bootlegger's.

On-tap, at Bootlegger's,

A: Pours a dark red/fuschia, real light head, no retention, very murky with fruit bits.

S: Red and purple berries, lots of acid, lemons.

T: Lots of dark berry flavour with the acid undercurrent throughout. Jammy, real fruit flavour. Hints of chocolate on the finish. Tasty beer.

M: Moderate/high acid. Medium-bodied, very tart.

D: I love using acai in a fruit beer, no one I know has ever done that before. Lots of good flavour, another nice sour from Bootlegger's.

On-tap at Bootlegger's

A: The pour is a dark purplish color with almost no head but some tiny carbonation bubbles are visible on the top of the glass.

S: This is one acidic smelling beer. A hint of vinegar, but lots of berry notes. And by a lot, I mean that's just about all you smell. Lots of great tart berry flesh, skins, and maybe a bit of oak.

T: The flavor is sharply tart, especially up front, but settles down a bit throughout the sip becoming slightly sweet on the finish. Slightly acetic with a more lactic sourness followed by great berry flavor that is slightly tannic. The finish becomes a bit Sweet Tart like at a few points throughout the glass.

M: The body is fairly light, but I don't mind that in a sour. Light to medium carbonation and only moderately dry.

D: I liked this one a fair bit. The flavor and aromas were nice, but the mouthfeel was a bit weak. Other than that, a solid beer.
