On-tap at Beachwood I,

A: Pours a deep amber to red with a medium white head, good lace.

S: Deep piney hop notes, cedar and pink grapefruit, great malty undercurrent.

T: Pine and grapefruit, hop forward and it shows. The malt is very good here, crystal style, biscuit, quite forward. A very good mix of flavour. Like Hog Heaven meets Old Ruffian.

M: Medium to full-bodied, creamy, resiny, thick, a tad thin by the finish.

O: A very good barleywine. Now April's getting hot, maybe a little late for these types of beers, but I certainly enjoyed it.

On-tap at Bootlegger's

The beer is a dark amber color with a khaki colored head. Intense fruit aroma to this. Lots of citrus notes as well as some dark fruit such as raisin and black cherry. Quite a bit of caramel and toffee notes with a hint of brown sugar. The flavor has a moderate pine and citrus peel bitterness with good grapefruit flavor. A strong malt backbone of toffee and caramel with more of the sweet dark fruits that were present on the nose.

Bottle pour at the Bootlegger's 5th Anniversary Celebration held at The Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA.

Pours a murky dark honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, caramel, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with a candied citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some great aromas and tasty flavors.

22oz bottle courtesy of womencantsail. Thanks!

A: Almost a ruby-red color with shades of brown. Thin creme head. Not too sticky against the glass.

N: Deep whiffs of toffee, pineapple, mango, and caramel. Some vanilla. Very tropical. Smell sticky and it's very much on the sweet side.

T: Wow. Lots more of the pineapple and mango. Caramel sweetness. Has a bitter base to balance. Almost ashen at the base without the disgusting nature of the tray. Very biscuity and some vanilla.

M: Sticky with a medium mouthfeel. Right in range, I would say.

O: An all around excellent beer, and one I'd heartily recommend if you favor the tropical sweetness factors.

2012 Release

Thanks to my boy Jeremy for snagging one for me.

App- A very deep deep sunset orange with a tinge of gold and yellow intermixed. A small one finger head with a mild cling. A bit of dish soap bubbles around the edges with some film.

Smell- A good nose but very fresh. but what did I expect. Its an 11% Monster. A very large damp citrus with some succulent hop notes. Rich creamy malts and no sign of booze though.

Taste- The debate rages with this beer. BW vs. Monster DIPA. The one beer that I would say could make an arguement for the title. Taste was much like the nose with a ton of damp citrus with a good amount of creamy rich malts. A nice blending but just a bit young still.

Mouth- A full medium body with a perfectly medium carbonation. Rich, creamy, caramel and citrus after taste.

Drink- This was a beer where it was hard to tell where one style ended and another began. A good beer, but still young. Needs to sit for a bit.

Limit one, directly from the brewery, their highest abv to date.

The beer is murky dark copper, with beautiful garnet highlights.. A large ecru head takes forever to dissipate, and leaves tons of chunky lacing, and retains rather well.

Smells of hops, piney and bold. A very boozy astringency makes me scared. There are some nice floral undertones, as well as some caramel candy maltiness.

Taste is mildly piney through out, not overpowering though, as the toffee and hard candy malts come through rather nicely. As well there is a nice fermented grape pungency. The beer has a lingering hop tang.

Texture is devilishly smooth. Medium bodied, with a nice barley wine burn. Not so easy to drink, but what barley wine is, amirite?

Great looking beer, the smell is somewhat out of control, but the flavors are nice, and the texture is spot on. An excellent example of the American Barley Wine. Hops, and plenty of them, fortunately not covering the malts.
