Quite handsome in the Duvel tulip with an exemplary long-lasting head on first opening. Color is a dark reddish brown. Heavy mouthfeel. Interesting warm malty aroma.

Flavor is dark and raisiny. A plum pudding of a beer. Dark roast malt with a spicy note, and a sweetness that never ends. Dark caramel, fig jam, and lots of butter. A slight dry touch is the entire extent of the alleged Belgian connection. Hints of wintergreen and licorice. Overall, it's sweet, sweaty, and flabby. From the 500 ml bottle bought at Monarch Beach Market.

8.0% ABV confirmed. 750ml brown glass bottle with blue unappealing label and hood and wire cap (aka cage) over a cork acquired at a local SoCal beer store and served into a Mitchells of Lancaster flared stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Expectations are average given the brewery. Not sure they have the chops to pull off this style. 5th Anniversary Ale. The label claims it's a mix of a Belgian Style Stout and a Belgian Style Dark Ale. That does not sound appealing.

Served cold, straight from the fridge, and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

The wire is wound so tight it's somewhat painful to unwind by hand. Break out the wire clippers for this one. Unbranded cork pops off easily. No liquid surges upwards.

A: Pours a 2.5 finger khaki-tan colour head. Decent cream. Fizzy and somewhat thin - especially for a Belgian Dark or Stout. Good retention for the ABV, about 4-5 minutes. Body colour is a dark black; not quite a jet black. Opaque. No yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. No lacing or "legs" here. Overall, it's looking pretty typical for what it claims to be; nothing stands out as unique or special but there are no overt flaws.

Sm: Roast, cocoa powder, chocolate malt, biscuit malt, dark malts, and biscuity yeast. Hints of drier more vinous notes you might find in a Belgian Dark. A fairly dry aroma which has me interested, but it's not great for either of the styles it purports to combine. The yeasty notes are a highlight. No hop character or alcohol comes through. Average in strength and surprisingly dry. Maybe some raisin in there too.

T: Raisin, dried plum, vinous character, muddled chocolate malt, dark malts. Maybe some brown sugar? The subtle cocoa powder from the aroma is nowhere to be found here, nor is the roast I was looking forward to. The biscuity yeast is missing as well. So pretty much everything that was good from the aroma isn't present in the flavour profile. No hop character comes through, nor does any alcohol. All in all, it's a middling simple brew that comes off quite boring. There's little happening here. Uninspired and bland. Balance is average; doesn't feel cohesive or seamless. Lacks any complexity or subtlety whatsoever.

Vinous character is dominant. Flavour intensity and duration are both unimpressive and restrained. Poor depth of flavour.

Mf: Lightly coarse and dry from the vinous character. Overcarbonated. Too thick for the lack of flavour, yet weirdly thin where the climax should be. Lacks body. Bad presence on the palate. Doesn't suit the flavour profile all that well. Middling execution.

Dr: Largely a failure as either a Belgian Stout or a Belgian Dark Ale. Another dud from Bootleggers. Hides its ABV pretty well, but other than that there's little of note to say about it. Why brew this? I wouldn't get it again or recommend it to others. Overpriced, as well. Drinkable but of lower quality.

On tap at the Bootlegger's 5th Anniversary Celebration held at The Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton, CA.

Billed as a Belgian stout.

Pours a murky dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and Belgian yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and yeast flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.
