Sour Barrel Aged Warlock is advertised as Crown's first attempt at a Sour Beer. It is also a variation on the Winter Warlock recipe, which I adore it in original form. Crown has a winner here.
Served on tap on 3/6/2013, the ale was served in a snifter with a slight head. It was dark in color but had noticeable red hues that floated like highlights in the glass. The aroma was fairly straight forward with notes of cherry and oak. The oak gave the impression of vanilla hiding in the background. In the initial taste, one detects sour cherry, oak, tart raspberry, and a general spicy that is associated with the original Winter Warlock. The level of sour is quite potent, but it not enough to take away enjoyment. The oakiness comes through stronger in the aftertaste with the sour fruits fading into the background. The mouthfeel would allow this to be an easy drinker, though my head tells me that drinking a lot of this one might be a bad idea if you work the next day.
