I've been on an Inland Empire tear the last few days, but why stop? I have 22 ounces of Imperial IPA on the way. Good thing, because I work early tomorrow. Drink it fresh says the label, but go figure, there's no date on the bottle. On to the beer:

There's nothing pale about the color. It looks toasted orange in color and is topped with a velvet creamy head sitting an inch thick after the pour. Retention is okay, lacing is pretty good. The aroma has pleasant hop cones, yet also has a very fruity character, like fruity esters. Actually, the two together smell pleasant, even if it's not up to the high bar set by the style.

The taste starts fruity. But not from the hops, from esters. The hops add some bitterness and grassiness to the beer, though it's not the dominating factor of the beer, which is unusual per style. There's dry crackery malt, also a note of solvent alcohol, which at 9.5% ABV does hide much of itself. Big bodied and smooth, perhaps this beer's best attribute.

Not a bad beer on its own. The problem is the bar for the Double IPA style is set very high, and being merely "not a bad beer" is going to get you passed.

Very strong floral with pine hop nose. Pours slight hazy reddish orange amber under a 2” foam cap descends to thick ½” foam cap that produces generous lace. The palate starts with caramel malt with some citrus, orange, light plum and then the grapefruit hop flavors turn astringent followed by a return of some sweetness returns before hops and malt mingle in the finish and dry out. Medium carbonation and medium high body. While the beer is big, the elements are well balanced.

I pour the Liberation from a 22 oz. bottle into a large wine glass, Pours a deepish caramel with a nice frothy cap of foam. The caramel color doesn't bode well and puts this IPA 300 miles from San Diego even though it's just across the border.

Really enjoy the Bavarian Hefe from these guys but this beer is a bit of a mess. I took a chance....I lost. Potent caramel crushes the decent hop aroma that might have been. This beer might catch a breath in the NorthWest but not here in the SouthWest. Malty and 'fudgy'. To think this came of the same ilk as Blind Pig is catastrophe. It's too dark and it's too malty, yet nondescript.

Tremendously rich and spicy brew. A really interesting style of DIPA that is full of aromatic hops with all the flowers and spices, rather than the lately common variety of dank murk and bitter swamp. The aroma is sensational.

Pours a clear orange in the tall tulip, excellent foam and lacing, and a sudsy mouthfeel. Sharp and hot, prickles the tongue, and with all the alcohol, pickles it as well. Hugely fragrant flowery hop aroma. Lots of malt, but it's more thin and less mellow than other big beers. My favorite big IPA this year so far. I think Black Market is one of the better Southern California breweries.

This is not quite a sipping beer, you want to treat it more like booze. Take a gulp, feel your mouth grow hot, exhale the spiciness, and feel the glow down your throat and into your chest. Woof! From the 22 oz bottle bought at Barons Marketplace in San Diego.

On tap for the 4th Annual LA Beer Week Beer Festival at Union Station in Los Angeles, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy orange-white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with some honey and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.
