poured from a can into a pint glass

A: standard brown color with a one-finger tannish head that didnt last long. no real lacing to speak of.

S: hops overwhelmed any other smells

T: hops, hops, hops. some caramel and malty flavor are hidden in there, but it's bitter hops from beginning to end

M: Decent mouthfeel; not much carbonation

O: To me it was more of an IPA than a brown ale, as it came across much hoppier than I expected. Probably a good beer if you're looking for that

No freshness date, poured into a pint

A- pours a murky brown creek water color with a small foamy off-white head that reduces to just a bit floating on top

S- husky malt with sweet notes of caramel, chocolate, vanilla and raisin. Light fruity & herbal hop aroma

T- sweet earthy malt with flavors of toffee & chocolate, grainy and husky, light herbal hops with a medicinal-like bitterness that lingers, somewhat unorthodox for a brown ale

M- medium body and carbonation, foamy mouthfeel and finish

O- middle of the road brown, would like to see more of the chocolate/toffee, and the strange medicinal bitterness leaves a strange linger

A - This beer poured maybe a half finger of light tan head. Some larger bubbles that sticks around. The body is an odd brown with slight red. Somewhat cloudy, but the color makes it look even more so.

S - Such a sweet cherry fruit leather that comes out strong and up front. It's a very nice aroma that I was not expecting. Almost some oak. Good.

T - Here is it much more of that brown ale flavor. Nice bitterness that comes quick and then ends with an earthy malt.

M - Very strong carbonation and decent body. Maybe a little over carbonated for this style.

O - The aroma was so great but then fell off with the first sip. The sweetness went away and it was just an average brown.

A: Huge, light beige foamy head. Bright amber, lots of bubbles.

S: Nutty and malty. Grainy. Alright, but nothing spectacular.

T: Lots of grains, nutty malts. Not much to say.

M: Kind of flat, actually. Thinish, disappointing.

O: It's ok, but it's very meh to me. I like it better on tap, but it's not my favorite Good People beer.

On tap at 5 Points Grill, into a pint glass a nearly opaque chestnut color with a light brown head that quickly fades to a thin cap with some pretty solid sheeting. Nose of faint malts and hints of chocolate. Not a whole lot on the nose; too bad. Taste is of pleasing, sweet toasted malt with hints of chocolate and cocoa. Again, nothing spectacular. On the palate, it's somewhat thin and seems a bit flat. Drinkability is decent; it's easygoing with good flavor. I would probably have another.

Overall: A decent brown ale, though a bit watery and flat. Worth a try, especially since it's from a true "micro" brewery in an area not historically known for beer (Birmingham, AL).

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #52 (May 2011):

Dissipating, light tan head lands a thin lacing; hazed rusty brown color. Aromas of light toffee, salt water, maraschino cherry, toasty bread and a vague yeast. Lightish but very creamy mouthfeel. Gritty, biscuity, with toasted husk, chicory and a hint of fermented molasses. Hop bitterness struggles to get through this maze of malt flavor for some balance but prevails eventually. Kiss of ripe fruit. Pretty dry finish, huskiness sort of dominates with a dried hay-like flavor, though does not go overboard. Bit of a toasted malt bomb here—a cleaner finish and perhaps we’d have a stellar beer in our glass. Aside from that, it ends up being a good drink.
