Notes/Commercial Description:
Big coffee flavors dominate early only to be wiped out by an enormous about of Willamette hop flavors. One of GPBC’s most requested beers. Complex and full of flavor yet amazingly sessionable. Brewed with coffee from Primavera Coffee Roasters here in Birmingham, AL.

Had it on tap at Good People's taproom.

Coffee dark, just a few hints of red, not quite pure black. Nice, fluffy caramel-colored head, about 2 inches. Pretty good retention.

Huge aroma of coffee, with subtle hints of cocoa and vanilla. Great smell. Just like a delicious cup of coffee brewing in the morning.

Coffee flavor isn't quite as overpowering in the flavor, but definitely still the frontrunner. The cocoa from the nose is much more prevalent, as well as the roasty notes from the malts, with just a hint of hoppy goodness.

The oatmeal helps make this stout rich and creamy and smooth.

Overall, I could see this beer being perfect on a cold, rainy day, but was pretty tasty even in the hot Alabama summer.

I Had this beer on tap at the Good People brewpub and was impressed (admittedly, I had low expectations). It wasn't life changing, but dependable enough for me to buy a six pack the next day. Unfortunately, the bottled version is much too carbonated and somewhat overhopped. The Williamette hops are more apparent than the coffee by a wide margin, and the mouthfeel is almost shockingly rough for an oatmeal stout, generally prized, of course, for a soft yet robust chewiness. This beer is certainly off the mark for its style, and sadly fails carve out a satisfying niche of its own. Perhaps worth a try if you place a great value on trying new things. It is not a complete failure, but neither is it a worthy successor to its esteemed predecessors (FBS, Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout).

Tasted On: 03-11-2014
Freshness: Canned on 01-27-2014
Packaging: 12 oz. can
Glassware: Wellington
Purchased: 6-pack from Liquor Express, Huntsville AL

A: Black and opaque, looks like an engine oil. A huge tan head shows good retention and thick lacing.

S: Smells of dark coffee and roasted barley; also has an earthy/woody aroma and vanilla.

T: First up is the bitterness of heavy roasted malts, plus earthy hop notes and unsweetened chocolate. As the beer warms, the bitterness seems to fade and the beer is more balanced.

M: Medium in carbonation, with a thick body. The finish is smooth with bitterness of coffee in the aftertaste.

O: A good stout but somewhat on the abrasive side. Could benefit from a little more sweetness in my opinion.

A - Pours with a dark coffee color with a dark brown color and a pale white head that doesn't last long

S - Coffee and roasted malts are smelt easily after opening and while pouring. Secondary smells of dark chocolate.

T - Simi-sweet chocolate upfront with a slight coffee aftertaste and dark malt following

M - Not too thick just about right on the oatmeal stout front

O - I like it. Not as much as some of my favorite breakfast coffee stouts like Wake-n-bake and FBS, but I will definitely make sure I have these in my fridge for those chilly nights. Very reasonably priced too.

A - Pours with a dark coffee color with a slight tinge of brown to it. It's carrying some carbonation with a two finger medium khaki head.

S - For a coffee stout, it's subdued. Granted the coffee flavors are there, but not in your face like I would expect. Secondary smells of roasted malts and light dark chocolate.

T - It delivers what I expect from a coffee stout... Coffee, roasted malts & a bit of dark chocolate, just like the nose. There's a bit of a bitter finish.

M - For the style, the body is on point & maybe a bit overcarbed.

O - It's good and it's solid. I just think the rating is a bit biased towards where it's distributd.

Poured into a regular, boring glass.

A: Brownish black with a one finger mocha head that lingered. Frothy lacing.

S: Like they say, the coffee is in your face, followed by charred malts and some vanilla.

T: Wake and smell the brewski! Excellent coffee notes with a charred oatmeal and malt backbone. Some caramel and vanilla added, too. Robust as hell. Semi sweet. Balanced. A charred, bitter finish that goes down easy.

M: Medium with medium, smokey carbonation.

O: I can see why this one's so popular. Rich and robust coffee wakes up the palette. Would love to try it on tap.
