Big coffee flavors dominate early only to be wiped out by an enormous about of Willamette hop flavors. One of GPBC’s most requested beers. Complex and full of flavor yet amazingly sessionable. Brewed with coffee from Primavera Coffee Roasters here in Birmingham, AL.

Had it on tap at Good People's taproom.

Coffee dark, just a few hints of red, not quite pure black. Nice, fluffy caramel-colored head, about 2 inches. Pretty good retention.

Huge aroma of coffee, with subtle hints of cocoa and vanilla. Great smell. Just like a delicious cup of coffee brewing in the morning.

Coffee flavor isn't quite as overpowering in the flavor, but definitely still the frontrunner. The cocoa from the nose is much more prevalent, as well as the roasty notes from the malts, with just a hint of hoppy goodness.

The oatmeal helps make this stout rich and creamy and smooth.

Overall, I could see this beer being perfect on a cold, rainy day, but was pretty tasty even in the hot Alabama summer.

Deep, dark brown with a sticky head of tan-colored foam. Layers of malt aroma quickly spill over the edge of the glass: medium roast coffee, dark chocolate, crusty rustic bread, and a hint of brown sugar. Somewhere behind this is a trace of mildly spicy Pacific Northwest hops. Medium-bodied but missing some of the silkiness of other Oatmeal Stouts, Good People's version delivers a sharp and pronounced black coffee flavor, a bit of burnt toast, and a generous level of bitterness. Roasty malt character and earthy hop character mingle on the palate and persist into the finish. A solid offering that could benefit from a touch of finesse here and there.

Smooth, Roasty, Creamy, Bitter

Here’s a beer that gets us thinking about a bit of breakfast in a can. Besides, gourmet coffee and oats is all you need, right? This ale throws down in a robust manner; it’s super roasty with a real mellow charred grain character. Seeming a bit bigger than it actually is, this Coffee Oatmeal Stout has a lush smoothness that makes it easy to knock back. Amazing beers don’t have to have high levels of alcohol, and this beer is proof of that.

Pretty solid . . . Nothing really exceptional stands out to me but there are some nice flavors going on. Mouth feel is little thin for my liking. The coffee addition has a noticeable bitterness finishing on the palate. Overall a very decent oatmeal stout.

from a 12 oz can
Excellent tan head over a nearly black and opaque body.

Has good potential but the coffee here is too much like mediocre coffee grinds and not enough like Kona or other fine coffee beans. In any case, there's a good bit of coffee in here so this won't appeal to anyone who does not like coffee.

Moderately bitter aftertaste with simulated expresso.

Growler purchased from Gus's in Auburn, AL.

Pours black with a one-finger tan head. THe head dissipates into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth coffee and roasted malts. As it warms hints of dark chocolate waft out.

Tastes similar to how it smells, though not as deep. Roasted malt flavors up front are joined quickly by coffee flavors and a hint of dark chocolate. These flavors carry through to a mildly bitter ending that leaves a bit of coffee lingering on the palate.

Mouthfeel is alright. It has a good thickness although I was hoping for a bit more silkiness due to the oatmeal.

Drinkability is good. I finished the growler with the help of a few friends and could easily do the same with another.

Overall this was a very solid coffee stout and I'm intrigued by Good People's other offerings. Worth a shot.

I Had this beer on tap at the Good People brewpub and was impressed (admittedly, I had low expectations). It wasn't life changing, but dependable enough for me to buy a six pack the next day. Unfortunately, the bottled version is much too carbonated and somewhat overhopped. The Williamette hops are more apparent than the coffee by a wide margin, and the mouthfeel is almost shockingly rough for an oatmeal stout, generally prized, of course, for a soft yet robust chewiness. This beer is certainly off the mark for its style, and sadly fails carve out a satisfying niche of its own. Perhaps worth a try if you place a great value on trying new things. It is not a complete failure, but neither is it a worthy successor to its esteemed predecessors (FBS, Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout).

12 ounce can into a snifter.

It looks how I want my stouts: frothy, dark khaki-colored head, abundant lacing, opaque body, dark brown and almost black in color. Slight deduction because I actually expected a darker body still. 4.75

Surprised that yeasty floral notes are the first thing I notice, followed by a chocolate chip cookie deal. Light coffee aroma. Not wowed but pleasant. 4

Yes! Plenty of coffee on the flavor though and this coffee has some depth to it. There's a light sweetness offering some vanilla and caramel, toasty nuttiness, dark chocolate and notes of floral and grassy hops. 4

Surprisingly bitter and a tad thinner-bodied than I'd prefer but I find myself slurping it down all the same. The floral bitterness lingers with coffee after an initial dose of sweetness and faint creaminess. 4

Enjoyable, light and easy-drinking.

Good People Coffee Oatmeal Flavored Stout
12 oz. can

There's no secret to this one, it's coffee! It's got a coffee aroma like fresh brewed black coffee... probably the best coffee aroma I've found to date. Then the same follows through in the flavor with some sweet notes upfront and then a long, pleasant dry coffee finish. It's balanced and smooth. What I find odd is that it's labeled "flavored" despite the fact that they use coffee in the brewing process. Perhaps there are additional flavorings added? Regardless, it's brilliant.

Visited J. Clyde's in Birmingham and had a chance to try Good People's brew. Took the chance to try the coffee stout that was on tap. The beer poured very dark/opaque, rich with a creamy head & decent carbonation. The scent was strong coffee/espresso aroma with a nice smack of hops. The taste had even more coffee that was fairly well balanced with sweet malt. The mouthfeel was good, decent body to this beer. Probably could have two if it were snowing outside...but on hot days...I would stay away.
