This is one of the best stouts around. It absolutely hangs in elite company. I previously had small tastes of this at Magic City Brewfest, but an exceptionally rare keg made its way to the Clyde over the weekend. It's huge, deep, booming. Coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, booze, all kinds of stuff going on here.

It's not THE absolute best imperial stout I have ever put to my lips (thus not a perfect score) but it is damn close. Wish this would go in bottles so I could sock a handful away and see what it does over 5 or 10 years. (541 characters)

Served in a 12 ounce tulip glass at the good people brewing company in Birmingham. Wow. Instantly all I taste is dark, sweet, and a hint of alcohol. This is a beast of a beer and well worth a try if you ever make it to the brewery. Definitely up there as one of the best imperial stouts I've ever tasted (303 characters)

Poured from 32 oz growler into a snifter.

A: Midnight black with two finger chocolate brown head that settles to a nice ring around the edge. A small bit of lacing but consistent with something this high ABV.

S: Big bourbon dominates the nose. Some coffee, bitter chocolate, and vanilla.

T: Follows the nose fairly closely. Bourbon, dark espresso, chocolate, vanilla, dates, and raisins. Alcohol is still fairly dominate but not as much as the nose would suggest.

M: Thick without being syrupy. Coats the tongue nicely, and the alcohol warms you as you drink.

O: Enjoyable imperial stout. I really wish they would bottle this one. I would love the opportunity to age this bad boy for a while. (698 characters)

Had this on tap at the Magic city Brewfest.

Appearance: black, black, black. No light coming through this one. Creamy brown head.

Smell: dark fruits - think plums, cherries, raisins.

Taste: follows through on the promise from the smell.

Mouthfeel: thick, viscous, but not syrupy.

Drinkability: even on a hot Alabama summer day, temp and humidity in the high 90s, I wanted more!

If you like big, chewy Imperial Stouts, El Gordo will put a big smile on your face. (467 characters)

Poured from 22oz bottle into snifter. Batched in 2012, hand-bottled 5/13, and released 12/14. (322 bottle count)

Look - Midnight black with dark head, medium lacing.

Smell - Cocoa, molasses, and espresso. Not overwhelmingly boozy for such a big beer.

Taste - Follows the nose with nice espresso and cocoa, some fruit notes .

Feel - Thin but lightly sticky to the tongue. Overall, though, great consistency.

Overall - what a difference age makes with this one. I hope they continue bottling this because the difference between fresh and aged is night and day. So much more mellow when it's had some time to settle in. If you can get your hands on a bomber of this, I highly recommend. No doubt in my mind this is the best offering in Alabama now. (754 characters)

A great beer. Had it on tap at the Good People taproom in a snifter.

Beautiful pour. Pitch black with tan/coffee color head. Head dissipated into a thin ring and left some great legs, like wine.

Rich chocolate, vanilla, stone fruits, coffee, booze, with just a hint of raspberry in the nose.

Full-flavored. All the chocolate, fruits, and raspberry are present with a little licorice. A little too much booze, but hey, it's almost 14%. Overall, very well incorporated.

Nice, big bodied stout. Sticks to the tongue.

Really tasty beer. Wish it was available in bottles so I could sit on one. Or maybe some special versions like Vanilla, Coffee, or Bourbon-aged. (663 characters)

Had the "Fat Man" on tap at Magic City Brewfest.

Pours pitch black with nice, dark brown head. The head dissipated quickly, leaving behind some sticky oily residue, but not much lacing. Basically this beer is motor oil.

Great aroma. Raspberry, chocolate, coffee, hints of caramel and vanilla. Even though this is a big abv (just under 14%), the complex aroma all but hides the booze.

Very similar to the nose, with chocolate and coffee being the most dominant players. The raspberry so prevalent in the nose is a little more subdued and plays more of a support role with the vanilla. The booze isn't as incorporated quite as perfectly as in the nose. It rears its head a little in the finish, but still not overpowering.

This beer is as thick and full as they come. It feels very akin to Ten Fidy.

Love this brew. Even in the sun and 100 degree Alabama heat, this drinks pretty good. (888 characters)
