Mummer's Brew 2014 is listed as a "Robust Mocha Porter" and has the appearance to match; the oily black body is a dead ringer for coffee and its brownish edges are the colour of chocolate. Equally befitting, it pours with a head reminiscent of whipped cream... though it does quickly disappear.
The aroma features more than just our two headliners; notes of purple plum, black licorice, and even a hint of raisin make room for themselves. Vanilla bean too (though those are actually part of the recipe). It doesn't smell 'robust' in the American context but there's no shortage of things to get happy about.
At the base is a somewhat acrid, what I call "sooty", mouthfeel as result of the roasted barley. Fortunately the chocolate lends a degree of silkiness and the coffee adds additional layer too. The blend of the three produces a well-balanced stout, albeit one that doesn't exactly burst with flavour.
With respect to Fixed, I'm glad Yellowbelly aired on the side of caution with the coffee. But the fact there's not a ton of chocolate is a disappointment given I'm familiar with the outstanding quality of the Newfoundland Chocolate Company. Instead of sweetness, however, this porter is quite earthy, a courtesy of Willamette and East Kent Goldings.
If I'm being truthful this year's edition of Mummer's Brew didn't quite live up to expectations. That's not to suggest I didn't enjoy it - on the contrary, this mild, balanced, sneakily cocoa- and coffee-accented porter is perfectly suited to drinking on each and every one of the 12 days of Christmas.
