Had a 12oz can that poured a copper color with a white head. The aroma is fruity with citrus hops and contrasting to the biscuit malts. The taste is moderately bitter with some bread-like sweetness. It was moderately carbonated and overall was a pretty good beer. Would like to try it on tap next time I'm in Jacksonville.

12oz can recently purchased and consumed while in the area of the brewery. It appears a copper color with a white head that fades leaving patchy webs of lace.

The aroma is fruity and pulpy with citrus hops and contrasting caramel to biscuit grain backing.

The taste is pulpy bitterness lightly fruity and floral with ample resinous bitterness that lasts with some bready grain sweetness to contrast.

This is light bodied and moderately carbonated. Overall a decent brew but nothing wowing about it.

(From a can, purchased at Trader Joe's) I had high expectations, but it's just not that great an IPA, especially compared to other Florida IPAs like Funky Buddha, Cigar City, and Proof. Drinkable, certainly, but meh.

L: Hazy dark orange, with a small off-white head. Darker for an IPA.

S: Muted citrus hops, and sweet malt.

T: This surprised me a bit. Sweet maltyness, then a touch of fruity bitterness, then more malt. Definitely more malty than your average IPA. Bitterness dies off and the aftertaste is more sweet, almost carmely malt.

F: Medium bodied and very smooth.

O: Lately I've described myself as a hophead, but I do love a good malty beer. This is somewhere in between. Very drinkable, and the bitterness isn't really there. I could see how some with disapprove and say that this Beer doesn't do a good job of standing out. However, I'd drink it again. I'd recommend it to someone who is easily put off by more hopforward IPAs.

Can. Pours a hazy orange color with an off-white head. Aroma is muted. Light citrus and a plain, malty sweetness. Flavor is decently dull as well. Citrus, subtle bitterness and a very agreeable maltiness. It's pretty bland. Pretty balanced. Left me wanting much more. Medium bodied. Didn't perceive much bitterness. Good carbonation. Won't remember this beer.

Bold City Brewery "Mad Manatee IPA"
12 oz. can, coded "212 14 11:33"
$1.67 @ Winn Dixie #0199, Jacksonville, FL

Appearance: Very hazy orange-copper body with visible particulate in suspension - most likely from dry hopping. The frothy off-white drops steadily to a wide collar. Lacing is average.

Aroma: Citrus and pine over a gentle golden caramel drizzled malt base.

Flavor: Bright hops combine citrus and pine with a subtle berry-like fruitiness (that could be from hops or yeast). A golden caramel character gives the grainy and biscuity malt charm, and it remains sweetish against a just-enough-to-balance bitterness along with a subtle, underlying tartness that's really quite unique. It finishes dry with lingering notes of pine and spice.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and moderately crisp before warming in the mouth to soften and become almost smooth.

Overall: A straightforward, clearly crafted IPA that's an accessible, reliable, and drinkable beer.

Pours a slightly hazy golden color with white head. Citrus and a little grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with a hint of malt. Seems to be a lighter IPA, but still good.

Can from Tipples. No date visible. Pours copper, clear, with a big fluffy white to off white head. Nice floral nose with some light malts shining through, light tropical sweetness, grass. Not bad. Flavor is light grass, hint of fruit, watery malt, and a dirty macro lager finish. Very light bodied with medium carbonation . No this isn't terrible, but there are so many better options out there I don't really know why this exists.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. can into an Upland pint glass.

A: Hazy gold to orange, with some hop floaters, a one-finger white creamy head, and lots of small bubble visible carbonation.

S: Resin and citrus rind, bready malts that give some sweetness almost no caramelly aroma. Not a huge nose on this though.

T: Bright orangey citrus, citrus rind bitterness with less resin flavor, along with a touch of tropical fruit and spice hops. A healthy malt backbone lends a bready sweetness, again with minimal caramel aspect. The hang is a fairly mild citrus rind bitterness.

A: Full-bodied for IPA, good carbonation sensation, and fairly low alcohol presence.

O: Another tasty, canned, yet pretty standard American IPA. Nothing here to set it apart, or perhaps to actively seek - but it's a more than serviceable option to have around. Drink one if you happen to see it.

Love the name and the logo: Don't mess with a mad manatee!

Pours a lovely amber with a sticky tan head and some floaties of yeast.

Aroma of citrus-like hops.

Bracingly bitter with herbal hop flavors and a nice biscuit/waffle malt note. This one's about the hops, but there's some malt thrown in there, keeping this from being as dry as West Coast style IPAs.

Lovely body with plenty of oomph.

Overall an excellent IPA, further proof that Florida is making some of the best of the style. Seek it out.

Hazy orange color after being poured into pint glass. The head is actually the best part about this beer. Good lacing in glass.

Smell was fine but not as great as the can lead me to believe. Typical IPA smell only not as strong.

Mouthfeel is too thin.

Taste reminds me more of a hoppy pale ale.

This beer can be dangerous considering how light it seems to drink with the 7% ABV. I could pound these and not think anything of it. Tastes like something I'd drink at the pool. Pretty much no alcohol to be tasted.

"A wonderful balance of hops and malt, this IPA is loaded with four hop varieties. You can expect a slight sweetness with toasted notes, a wonderful floral aroma and crisp citrus finish. Its as bitter as a MAD MANATEE!"

Poured from a 12oz can into a hotel high ball glass. Pours cloudy and is an orangeish good sort of color, with caramel highlights, a one finger sized head, and a nice dose of lacing.

Aroma was okay but nothing too grande. More malt than hops, toasty and bready with the requisite caramel undertones. The hops do lend a floral aroma as well as a slight earthiness.

Decent flavor. It is balanced. Malts and hops play with each other nicely. Slightly sweet. Hop flavor is slightly citrusy and the bitterness isn't overpowering. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and watery, however. This one isn't blowing anyone out of the water but it is a decent beer. Kind of a pale ale masquerading as an IPA, Or is it the other way around? I like that it is local.

Poured into a snifter, picked this bottle up in FL a few weeks back, just now getting to it. Beer is dark amber with a mild haze, nice off white head of small bubbles, moderate to low carbonation, nice lacing, looks good.

Aroma is lightly hoppy and a little grainy, I hope it tastes better than it smells.

It does taste better than it smells but it still isn't very hoppy. This is almost like a red ale in the mouthfeel, medium in body mildly bitter on the back end, mostly earthy piny hop components, a light IPA, probably not a repeat but a decent beer.

Single finger head with nice lacing in a murky amber with golden hues body. Aroma is mild with some malt and light musty hop aroma. Flavor is mostly pine and bitter hops. Very one dimensional however hop heavy. Medium body and moderate carbonation. This is a simple IPA with nothing memorable really. This is a Popular bold city brew but not popular with me.

Sampled this one from a bomber in a pint glass, approx. 50 degrees cold.

A: Minimalistic pour without much of a head. Medium warm gold orange in color with very light carbonation. Lacking much lacing, and what there is doesn't cling.

S: Citrus rind and earth notes on the nose, leaning towards earthy.

T: Malty dry grapefruit rind and dirt. Phelonic flavors giving medicinal notes which tilt the balance on the bitter side. Agressive hops profile would benefit from further shelf aging, a hop bomb when young.

M: Not very fizzy. Drinks ok with a dry finish.

O: Sadly, there's nothing unique about this IPA at all. Tastes like so many other middle of the road IPA's. It's not a bad beer, it's not a great beer. It's solidly mediocre. My suggestions would be to re-think the bittering hops choice and perhaps go with a lager yeast without the phelonic profile.

First off, what a fantastic label. Pours a hazy amber with two fingers of dense foam that settles slowly to a persistent half inch. Rings of thick lace down the glass. Smell: spicy, orange peel, chalky, bready + a little caramel in the back. Out of place peppery component...some non-neutral yeast character. Taste: citrus heavy - tangerine juice, grapefruit peel, sweet pale and a little caramel backdrop. Unfiltered apple juice. Oily and gets a bit astringent towards the end of the sip. Medium bodied, fluffy feel but again, thins out. Bone dry finish, somewhat unpleasantly dry. Some good, some bad. With tweaking could be pretty good.

Poured on-tap at the Bold City Brewery, the beer was served up in a pint glass. The beer is a bright, clear orange-gold coloring with a thin, clingy film of head. Great aroma of cedar and resinous, spiced hops. The flavors are smooth, with grapefruit and citrus blended sweetness forming a backbone for very spicy hops to springboard. There is a smokey and peppery aftertaste, with a dry, bitter finish. This beer is tasty, and light enough to drink A LOT of. That's a good characteristic, because I usually end up leaving with a growler of it, and in FL a growler is a gallon! Enjoy this one, my fellow hopheads!

Pours an orange-yellow, very clear with a nice white head. Head has great retention as I drink away at the glass, sticking closely to the sides of my Pisgah pint glass.

Somewhat malty aroma surprises the noise. Bready, banana-like, with an orange twist in there somewhere.

A bit of malt sweetness, but also orange and a bit of pine on the tongue. Ends with a much heavier pine feel.

A little bit soft on the tongue, but not at all disappointing. This clearly feels like an IPA. It is definitely NOT a Left Coast IPA though, and that may be for the best. But the clarity and crispness in the mouth on this definitely raises its score.

As mentioned, this is no West Coast hop-bomb. You are not going to be cringing with every sip, trying to keep the hops at bay. And that's good this little beer. 6.5%? I don't feel it. This is quite happy in the mouth and feels good going down for high marks on drinkability.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a standard pint glass.  Beer is a slightly hazy orange color, with a two-finger, thick, foamy off-white head.  Heavy lacing and moderate carbonation.

Aroma was citrus hops, light grains and malt.

Taste was bitter, citrus hops, some bread and grains.

Long bitter finish.  Medium bodied.  Not too thick and syrupy, but not too light either.  Well balanced.

Pretty drinkable brew.

Mad manatee IPA, Bold City Brewery, 22oz bottle,

A Clear and orange in color. Big thick head. 4

S Citrusy sweet hop aroma. Good smelling beer. 4

T Big hops, some piney flavor. Rich bready malt flavor comes through  after the hops. There is a significant amount of astringency. There is a lingering pine taste also.  3.5

M Medium body and thickness. Carbonation is right on. 4

D A good IPA. IPAs are my favorite style and after trying so many, my preference is for the IPAs that have the great hop aroma and flavor, but also keep the astringency in check.  This one is a little unbalanced with respect to astringency. 3.5

A - Poured out a clear, orange color with golden highlights. It had a small, white head of foam. It had a short lived head and left a little lacing.

S - It smelled citrusy with sweet caramel malt. Some floral notes.

T - It tasted of burnt toast maltiness with some caramel. The hops added a citrusy kick.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

D - This is an okay IPA. It is drinkable but not fantastic.

A - Hazy, orange body with a small head of white foam. The head settles quickly and leaves little lace.

S - A light, spicy pine aroma with some orange hop character. There is a little bit of bready malt in the background with a hint of toasted grain.

T - Bready malt up front with some caramel and toffee. Orange hops appear in the middle and give way to pungent pine in the finish. Strong bitterness duels with the bready malt and wins out in the end with a pithy, almost medicinal bite lingering in the aftertaste.

M - Moderately thick body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.

D - Not bad, the hop aroma is subtle, but very nice. The flavor is more about bitterness than hop character, which I don't care for but would work well for the real bitterness lovers out there. The malt is nicely handled an manages to keep things balanced up until the harshly bitter finish. I would probably really like this IPA if the hop aroma was just turned up a notch or two. As it stands, it is good but not great.

I've had this beer several times now, but decided to rate it from the growler since I've yet to rate it previously.

A - Pours a slightly cloud-like amber in color giving a small white head and leaving a ring on the glass.
S - Citrus and hints of ?? not sure, maybe pine.
T - Some hop kick and a mild bitter citrus punch. Some floral notes.
M - Crisp, holds a small bite through to the throat.
D - Very drinkable, though I prefer it straight from the tap. It seems even the growler ride home and 24 hours in the fridge has stepped it down a notch from sitting in the brewery with a fresh pint from tap. I'm not disappointed, it's still the best brew to take home in a growler from Bold City. They are doing good things here.

22 oz. bottle into a pint glass

A-Pours a hazy amber with a one finger white head that has fair retention and left just a bit of lacing.

S-Subtle earthy hops with a substantial malt presence as well. Not very complex or strong, but pleasant.

T-With the hop presence in the nose being so tame, I wasn't expecting the bitter hop bite I got. Its not breaking an IBU records for sure, but it does have a nice bitter IPA bite. Follows the nose with grassy, earthy hops, a slight piney presence and a biscuity malt round it out.

M-Medium body, somewhat slick and oily. I think they got the carb level just right, not too little or too much.

D-Drinks very easily. A few of these would be no problem.

Its not a world class IPA, but it certainly is a respectable beer from a young brewery that shows promise. I'd buy this again. As a matter of fact, I think I'll stop by the brewery this weekend and pick up a growler and see how it is on tap.
