Poured from a 22oz. bottle into a standard pint glass. Beer is a slightly hazy orange color, with a two-finger, thick, foamy off-white head. Heavy lacing and moderate carbonation.
Aroma was citrus hops, light grains and malt.
Taste was bitter, citrus hops, some bread and grains.
Long bitter finish. Medium bodied. Not too thick and syrupy, but not too light either. Well balanced.
Pretty drinkable brew.

Mad manatee IPA, Bold City Brewery, 22oz bottle,
A Clear and orange in color. Big thick head. 4
S Citrusy sweet hop aroma. Good smelling beer. 4
T Big hops, some piney flavor. Rich bready malt flavor comes through after the hops. There is a significant amount of astringency. There is a lingering pine taste also. 3.5
M Medium body and thickness. Carbonation is right on. 4
D A good IPA. IPAs are my favorite style and after trying so many, my preference is for the IPAs that have the great hop aroma and flavor, but also keep the astringency in check. This one is a little unbalanced with respect to astringency. 3.5

A - Poured out a clear, orange color with golden highlights. It had a small, white head of foam. It had a short lived head and left a little lacing.
S - It smelled citrusy with sweet caramel malt. Some floral notes.
T - It tasted of burnt toast maltiness with some caramel. The hops added a citrusy kick.
M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.
D - This is an okay IPA. It is drinkable but not fantastic.

A - Hazy, orange body with a small head of white foam. The head settles quickly and leaves little lace.
S - A light, spicy pine aroma with some orange hop character. There is a little bit of bready malt in the background with a hint of toasted grain.
T - Bready malt up front with some caramel and toffee. Orange hops appear in the middle and give way to pungent pine in the finish. Strong bitterness duels with the bready malt and wins out in the end with a pithy, almost medicinal bite lingering in the aftertaste.
M - Moderately thick body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.
D - Not bad, the hop aroma is subtle, but very nice. The flavor is more about bitterness than hop character, which I don't care for but would work well for the real bitterness lovers out there. The malt is nicely handled an manages to keep things balanced up until the harshly bitter finish. I would probably really like this IPA if the hop aroma was just turned up a notch or two. As it stands, it is good but not great.

I've had this beer several times now, but decided to rate it from the growler since I've yet to rate it previously.
A - Pours a slightly cloud-like amber in color giving a small white head and leaving a ring on the glass.
S - Citrus and hints of ?? not sure, maybe pine.
T - Some hop kick and a mild bitter citrus punch. Some floral notes.
M - Crisp, holds a small bite through to the throat.
D - Very drinkable, though I prefer it straight from the tap. It seems even the growler ride home and 24 hours in the fridge has stepped it down a notch from sitting in the brewery with a fresh pint from tap. I'm not disappointed, it's still the best brew to take home in a growler from Bold City. They are doing good things here.

22 oz. bottle into a pint glass
A-Pours a hazy amber with a one finger white head that has fair retention and left just a bit of lacing.
S-Subtle earthy hops with a substantial malt presence as well. Not very complex or strong, but pleasant.
T-With the hop presence in the nose being so tame, I wasn't expecting the bitter hop bite I got. Its not breaking an IBU records for sure, but it does have a nice bitter IPA bite. Follows the nose with grassy, earthy hops, a slight piney presence and a biscuity malt round it out.
M-Medium body, somewhat slick and oily. I think they got the carb level just right, not too little or too much.
D-Drinks very easily. A few of these would be no problem.
Its not a world class IPA, but it certainly is a respectable beer from a young brewery that shows promise. I'd buy this again. As a matter of fact, I think I'll stop by the brewery this weekend and pick up a growler and see how it is on tap.

Bold City Mad Manatee IPA... problably somewhere in the range of 5.5-6.2% alcohol.
Poured from a growler into a 22oz. mug.
A- Nice dark orange fluid with firey outer walls as the light goes threw it. Thick off white head falls leaving a sticky rim around the glass and quarter inch froth that stays around.
S- Sharp scents of pine and floral hops dominate the nose a sweet malts linger in the backbone.
T-M- Hops are appearant in the form of citrus and piney bite, with a sweet but muddled carmel malt backbone. Mouthfeel is heavily astringent and tangy with a lasting bitter bite.
D- All and all a good ipa and a good pint but maybe a little to much at once for a growler.

Appears a hazy orange toned amber with a small white cap. Scattered bits of lacing are left.
Smell is of orange citrus, grass, herbs, and wet hay.
Taste is of the aromas with a light malty flavor and a touch of mild, hay hops.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied, dry, and slightly bitter.

On-tap at the brewery.
Pours a clear light copper color with a one-finger white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.
Smells of pale malts with good amounts of earthy hops. Slightly bitter citrus aromas waft out as the beer warms.
Tastes similar to how it smells. Pale malt flavors kick things off and are followed quickly by decidedly bitter and earthy hop flavors. The hops carry through to a mildly bitter ending.
Mouthfeel is good. It's got a solid thickness with moderate carbonation.
Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass without a problem and could have another.
Overall this isn't a bad IPA however I wouldn't seek it out again.

OK IPA. My first brew from this company...bottle brought back from Jacksonville by a fellow Defense contractor. Pours a nice hazy dark amber with a decent size pillowy off-white head. Good retention and good lacing.
Smell was about average, mild earthy hops. Taste is balanced...flavorful enough but no hop bomb under any circumstances and a large amount of caramel malt in the finish.
Mouthfeel is crisp but a hair thin. Drinkability is pretty good. I'm guessing that this is about the same octane as Celebration Ale. Not the most memorable IPA but not bad either.

Mad Manatee IPA
Bold City Brewery
Style: American IPA
I was new to this local taproom, so I was very curious to try this brew during my first visit ~10/2009. I did not take any detailed notes at the time as I was visiting w/ 3 friends and tried to stay social. But I did take detailed mental notes and determined this brew was on par, and would get a growler of it in a heartbeat.
The IPA offering was bitter without being overdone. Balanced as much as an IPA needs to be, still allowing the hop character to be showcased accordingly. Enjoyable, to style, and sessionable option fo rmy next visit. A bit less "piney" than the Chinook offering.
I plan to take some more detailed notes on my next visit, and plan to update this review. In the meantime it's a rough reference for those who may be wondering how this brewery is doing @ the "one year old" milestone.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, dark amber body with a smallish, whitish head.
Smell: Aroma smelling of Brach's caramel squares, some earthy, leafy hops, and touches of pithy citrus.
Taste: Pale malts along with tastes of caramel and lightly toasted bread. Medium sweetness. Leafy, citrusy hop character. Moderately bitter. After the midway surge of bitterness, the malts hang back, allowing the hops to dominate somewhat. Dry, citric finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium-low carbonation.
Drinkability: Fairly solid! Stop and have a pint as this isn't just another IPA to plow over recklessly in a motorboat.

appearance: golden amber hues, reddish, low head lacing
smell: sublte citrus and a lot of perfume and earthy meadow aromas.
taste: bitter ale with slight citrus taste but lots of floral hop flavor, it's balanced.
mouthfeel: medium bodied, slightly on the chewy side for a IPA
drinkability: decent, I like his chinook much better, but it's another decent BC offering.
