Consumed December 30th, 2013 at the brewery.

Beer is black with no highlights. Very thin tan head.

Aroma is all raspberry. Totally.

Flavor is all sweet raspberry. No stout character at all, save for a slight dark chocolate/coffee note.

A bit thin and still in the mouth.

Less raspberry would allow the base beer character to be more clearly tasted, which is desperately needed. Would not order again.

Serving type: on-tap

12oz pour at The Wedge. 4.00. Served in a goblet.

Pours black with a beautiful one finger pillow of mocha head. Little lace.

Smells of dark chocoalte and raspberries. Inviting.

Taste is spot on. Deep dark chocolate, medium roast coffee notes, raspberries, cherry, toffee, mild licorice and and faint smoke/burnt wood. There is a little booze but it blends in very well.

Lush, creamy medium full body with just enough carbonation to keep it alive on the tongue. Sweet chocolate covered raspberry finish.

This is perhaps my favorite Asheville beer. Always happy to see it on tap during the winter months and would love to see it more often.

Serving type: nitro-tap

A: Poured a very, very dark brown, almost black with a massive light brown, foamy head that lasted the entire glass.  Exceptional lacing clung to the edges of the glass.

S: Excellent aroma.  Dark chocolate, dark fruit, and a very good does of fresh raspberries.  The raspberries smelled to be whole, fresh raspberries, rather than raspberry puree that I have found in a lot of raspberry stouts in the past.  A bit of roast in the background really enhances the other characteristics.

T: Dark chocolate, roasted barley, and coffee up front.  A bit of raspberry just behind the dominant characteristics.  Again, the raspberries taste fantastic and are at a great level ... not overwhelming, yet not too subdued.  Really good balance.

M: Medium bodied with moderately low carbonation.  Smooth and creamy on the palate.  Just a bit of a drying effect after each sip.

D: Really, really drinkable.  The 9.3 percent of alcohol is almost indistinguishable, letting the intended qualities shine.  This was the first Wedge beer I've tried, and I was thoroughly impressed.  Really look forward to heading back to the brewery the next time I'm in town.

Thanks to Alebird for the recommendation. He will not lead you astray.

OMG. What a beautiful thing! I'm a hophead, but this stout may make me change my ways. I have had Bell's Black Note, so I know what the best is, but this one is delicious. The Black Note is a 100. This Wedge product is a 98. Wedge is the coolest place in Asheville, packed with people. But I guess most of them are too cool to review beer. WTF?

Nose: 4.5. Taste 5. Couldn't be much better. Had to behave when I was there. Hate that! Raspberry flavor is strong, but that's OK. It works. Great brewery.
