First stop during my Asheville brewery tour. We stayed at the downtown Marriott Renaissance, which puts us in walking distance to a large number of breweries; this is not one of them. A short (7-8 minute) drive, and we wanted to hit it early, before we became unfit to drive.

Despite being one of the better/more reviewed breweries in Asheville, you can find negative reviews about this place. Both here and on food sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon. A common complaint I found online was that this is very much a "local" watering hole, and somehow that the "locals aren't friendly". This was not our experience at all. It's a cool little spot, off the beaten path, with a large outdoor area. Picnics to the left, large open "games" area out front, and a covered "dock"/porch right off the front door. There is not a lot of room/seating inside, so if the weather isn't good, I'm not sure I'd recommend stopping by until after the rain clears, as the large number of outdoor tables/benches/seating was almost all taken during my visit. But we were able to find a table for ourselves and our beers, and we set about sampling the offerings and enjoying the weather.

It did feel like it had a "local" atmosphere to it, but I felt like that gave it some authentic charm. Nobody was even remotely unfriendly or rude to us. Just a lot of happy, smiling, people, having some family-friendly fun and enjoying the beers. Lots of kids playing out on the grounds; very kid friendly environment.

And the beers were pretty good! The Creature IPA (Belgain-IPA), in particular, was great. As an avid IPA lover, it was my personal favorite. My wife and sister-in-law, the exact opposite of a avid IPA lovers, ALSO loved it. I don't think that's ever happened before. Most of the rest of the beers I tried were all good as well.

If/when I return to Asheville, I will stop back and visit these guys again. This place should not be very far down on your list of places to hit in Asheville.

Pretty big storefront, including a taproom and a "to-go" bar. Most of the seating is outside, but I was disappointed that of the great variety of beer brewed therein and the many taps available, only one dark beer was available for purchase.

Nestled in among the art galleries, in a three story building originally used for livestock distribution, this place has some serious character. Outside, railings, tables, chairs are all made of welded "found" metal tools and items. Just wandering around the place is a treat! It was getting pretty hot and sunny by the time we visited so we didn't want to sit out in the open patio with most of the crowd. We headed in to the small taproom proper, where there was really just space to line up and order, with only a couple stools inside. We got two samplers, going to a second alternate serving station outside to fill up one of the beers we ordered. They also have bowls of peanuts and buckets for shells...something I haven't seen at a bar for years! So if you have a serious peanut allergy, you may want to stay away from Wedge. We ended up sitting outside on cool rotating and moving chair sculptures, out of the brightest of the hot sun. I drank through the samplers and enjoyed many of the beers. The Julian Price Pilsner was well made and very refreshing! A hemp ale was actually tasty and will probably make me test positive on the next drug test I take. And the Iron Rail IPA was classic and well balanced. My least favorite was, much like Urban Orchard, the Wit. Overall, a very cool space, vibe, and a good collection of solid beers. I'm glad we went back to this place instead of heading back into downtown.

A short ride on the W1 (or W2) bus from downtown drops you off in the River Arts District, an evolving neighborhood where old warehouses have been converted into galleries, restaurants, cafes and one excellent 1300 barrel brewpub called Wedge Brewing Company.

Wedge Brewing can be found in the lower section of Wedge Studio, itself located in a building that once housed livestock in the 19th Century. Literally situated adjacent to railroad tracks, Wedge can be reached via Lyman Avenue, or down a staircase hidden behind several exhibits of iron sculpture.

It is as quaint a place as anyone can relax and enjoy some quality craft beer. Enter the taproom, which takes up a small corner of the brewery; check the chalkboard for whatever beer is available (about 8 drafts), order a pint or a sampler and then head outside and grab a seat at one of the communal tables. Note: there is neither table service nor is there any inside service. Another Note: Wedge offers an express IPA window for their delightful Third Rail. Also on tap is a complex Abbey style, a hoppier West Coast IPA and a hearty porter. Should you desire something to eat, there is a food truck parked next to the entrance. The patio is a lively place with locals, tourists, kids and dogs.
