"Rose is inspired by the Belgian Tripel style. It is a top fermented ale which has a deep golden color with a light refreshing body. The beer has a subtle hop profile using the Northwest's finest whole hop flowers. We use Aromatic and Honey malts along with Candy Sugar to give it a unique and fruity character. It is 6% alcohol by weight (7.5% by volume)."

The beer poured into the chalice clear medium amber with an off-white low persistent head which left traced on the glass.

The aroma was fruity and estery with a bit of banana and some light pepper notes. A low bit of vegetal character was notable as well. Some Belgian yeast spice was present and caramel malt was apparent in the aroma.

The flavor was mostly comprised of caramel with a bit of a corny flavor (DMS). Some spice presence made up the flavor, but for the most part it was malt and a bit of alcohol. The flavor was also lightly vegetal as was noted in the aroma.

The finish was dry with a lasting bit of light peppery spice and a very slight vegetal flavor into the aftertaste. The body was just below medium with a fairly low carbonation level. Nothing complex at all about this one, dunno why they call it a tripel, too dark, and it really doesn't resemble one at all.

Appearance: A really murky and cloudy brownish pour. A very thick and rich looking tan head sits atop this beer making it look like big thick mess of delicious goodness. The bottom of the bottle is caked and thick with yeast sediment.

Smell: Just a huge nose with a big malty sweetness. Lots of molasses and brown sugar jumps around the nose and there is a decent drop of spice as well with hints of cinnamon and vanilla. It just looks and smells like a heavy and complex beer.

Taste: Rich and creamy right off the bat. Roasted malt and plenty of hoppiness is obvious and the brown-sugary and molasses flavours are present here as well. The creaminess almost turns fluffy inside the mouth and the spicey sweetness turns toward a very warm, obvious alcohol finish. Somewhat a a dry, slightly woody & port like quality near the end althought it doesn't jump out at you. A very complex beer with alot of different flavours and smells floating around.

Mouthfeel: Very rich and creamy to start with and the mouthfeel moves towards a fluffy and fullness. A very big beer.

Drinkability: Definitley a cold weather beer for me. Fall/winter is when i would hit this one most often but with the sweetness and high alcohol, i wouldn't want more than a couple. A very good beer but i do prefer "Fred"....atleast based on memory.

Appearance – Beautiful cloudy orange color with a giant head that wouldn’t go away.

Smell – Malt and fruit come out at first, then are overwhelmed by the alcohol. There also seems to be a very ripe peach or something in there, like the meat of the fruit right at the pit.

Taste – The malt didn’t offset the strong alcohol as well as some of the other 10.0 ABV HOTDs. I got that peach again though on the tongue along with maybe a hint of banana and a lot of heavy spice. The finish is back to that deep, reddish peach center again and some type of bitter or tart ingredient that threw off the Abbely Tripel theme.

Mouthfeel – Lightly carbonated but not very smooth. This one was clumsy and gave in to the alcohol, slightly stinging the cheeks and gums as it went by.

Drinkability – Not something you could enjoy except at “ultra sip” mode.

Batch# 39 of Rose pours out of the bottle a deep cloudy orange with a big pillowy cloud-like sticky head. As the head falls it leaves massive lacing to decorate the inside of the glass. Looks dark for a tripel, but still quite impressive overall. Aromas of wildflowers, cloves, sweet malt, cracked peppercorns, citrus fruit. An overall yeasty, spicy earth tone dwells inside this brew. Crisp and inviting.

First sip brings a rush of spicy cracked peppercorn flavor (pink peppercorns per the label) along with a sweet maltiness that is highlighted by cloves, floral tones and light citrus tones. Earthy yeast meshes with hints of alcohol. The freshly cracked pepper lingers on the palate and makes for quite the spicy tripel. An interesting and well made brew.

Mouthfeel is smooth and light with a good rush of bubbly carbonation that tickles the tongue. This is a sipper brew and I'm finding it quite enjoyable. If you have an aversion to pepper, you might want to stay away...if not then I'd definetly recommend this tripel as it's quite unique. A worthy nightcap. Thanks to weefisheads for the opportunity.

Presentation: 12 oz brown long neck bottle with no freshness date, batch #38. Thin slurry of yeast on the bottom of the bottle that stays as long as you leave a little beer behind.

Appearance: Lightly chill hazed orange amber color does not block the sight of bubbles racing to the top, those bubbles hold the head strong and long and leave a beauty of a lace.

Smell: Powdery chalky yeast, peachy fruitiness, honey like malt and an estery sweet and spicy alcohol are all the foundation of the aroma.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Creamy smoothness, highly carbonated but conditioned quite well. Faintly astringent flavors are right up front, lots of husk and a bite from the yeast … this makes it a bit hard to take. Bit of spice activity in here, coriander perhaps? Peppery flavors are from the phenols that are at the normal level for the style. Alcohol is in line with wild fruitiness, spicy back and a warming end. Hops are vague and are lost within the initial astringent flavors. Finishes with a bitty bite and dry all the way.

Drinkability & Notes: Clarity and head are fine. Out of whack and could be cleaner for the style, not bad but not even close to real Tripels and a bit hard to drink IMO.

Batch# 36, 12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy yellow-gold, with an enormous offwhite head that you could stir with a fork. Head lasts forever and leaves abundant lacing down the tulip glass. Lots of yeast particles present, which eventually settle at the bottom. Aroma is promising, with sourwood honey, several fruits, and some floral hops. Mouthfeel is well carbonated and medium to thick bodied. Very creamy. Taste is of candied malts, some caramel, and hints of mango and grapes. Aftertaste is vinous, and alcohol makes its presence known. Not a bad example of an American Tripel, but it seems to lack some balance. It's an interesting experience to watch the yeast particles dance around at the bottom of the glass, while a few of the buggers try to make it back to the top of the glass. I would like to try another one of these, but not this month.

Uh..you sure this is a tripel, because I think we have a case of mistaken identity here. Pours a hazy, murky, yeasty brown with perhaps the most impressive head I've had in a long time. Almost whip cream thick and it's not budging. Smells gumdrop sweet with a hint of yeast.

This tastes very strong old ale like to me. Big mouthfuls of spice and a huge medicinal wave of pepper and alcohol. Sure doesn't taste like 6% ABV. Mouthfeel is a wee bit thin and a hair overcarbonated. Bit of funky aftertaste. Not a bad old ale, but not a good tripel

Amberish color, thick head. Aroma was a little citrusy. At first, I was thinking this might be an ipa or something, based on the appearance.

Taste, all over the place. Hot, yeasty, cloudy, peppery, coriander and citrus still. Bottle says golden rose on it. Couldn't get settled into this stuff. Too pricey and challenging to be drinkable.

Batch # 36...foamy, a big 1/2 inch head on a careful pour into a 6 oz festival tulip glass. Hazy sedimented dull orange-gold color. Aroma is quite yeasty with some elements of nutmeg. Actively carbonated and complicated by heavy hops that lean on a balsamic quality -- but there's other things going on as well. If you could mix sweetened lemonade in a charred wood bowl with dark caramel, that would approximate the flavor impression. Finishes with heavy bittering. Big and interesting, but not incredibly nice to my tongue. Adventure seekers should try it, its different.

A- Nice hazy golden body with a strong carbonation and a creamy light tan head. When held up to the light the body has a warm orange glow. Good Belgian lace on the glass.

S- Fruity aroma with hints of orange and a bit of banana.

T- soft malt flavors with some fruity notes and a good alcohol warmth. A nice beet taste in the finish with a gentle earthiness. The fruity notes have a nice floral tea kick from the hibiscus. The pink peppercorn spiciness is very subtle.

M-medium body but no alcohol heat and some creaminess from the carbonation.

D-This is a very unique triple. The beets and hibiscus and a great flavor that changes the fruity characteristics. Its a good solid triple with just a little twist. Very nice.

12oz. brown bottle split between 2 glasses. Batch 41

A: Pours a crystal clear orangish amber. Shortish head that leaves a fluffy skim. Not much lacing.

S: Spicy, fruity. Very sweet malts. An odd alcohol twang, very different. Some apple juice in the nose.

T/M: Very juice, especially apple juice. Some spicy yeast. Malts aren't as sweet as I thought but this up there. Body is a bit thin for the style and carbonation is low.

D: Easy to drink but pretty off style.

This arrived as a bright and clear red. It had just a ring for a head but still left some lace.

The smell has strong spice and peppers with pale malts. The taste brings a mild sourness and light esters. The mouthfeel was unique, being slightly tart. The drinkability was pretty good.

Hardly a conventional tripel, this take on the style came out fairly well.

On tap at The Drafting Room- SpringHouse, PA

Appearance- Bright glowing orange, hazy and murky with a thick soapy white head.
Smell- Strong candi sugar. Very sweet and fruity.
Taste- Whoa!! Sugary sweet, like rock candy. Huge hints of orange, cranberry, pinapple, and alcohol. I swear it tasted like a fruity girl drink. (sex on the beach, vodka/ cranberry, etc..)
Mouthfeel- sweet and fruity.

Overall- I'll pass on this sickingly sweet wine cooler. My 1st HOTD was a bust but it won't perterb me from trying others!

Although I was careful, sediment worked its way into the glass. Not that big a deal to me, but to prevent more from getting in there I had to leave a small amount of liquid in the bottle. Shame. But it looks great, with a dark amber/copper color under a modest creamy head that retained for a good while. Not much lace though.

Smells are fantastic: sweet, floral, musty, even a bit pungent in an Orval sort of way.

The flavor is excellent. Or I should say, the flavors, plural, are excellent. Bringing the aromas into the mouth, this has all elements listed above, with a pronounced earthiness and heightened fruit/spice tangle as well. Banana, pear, melon and plum elements mingle with hot pepper and clove. All the while the boldness of wild yeast hangs right in there, reminding a little of those great Flemish Primitive ales from Belgium. There's a lot going on here, and I appreciate what the aging has done for this tripel.

Mouthfeel is thick and chewy, hefty, with a good bit of carbonation zing to balance out the weight.

Right up there with Ommegang in terms of nailing something with its origins in Belgian beer artistry. But this is far from mimicry. Rose is something a little left-of-center from the usual tripel, one with its own beguiling personality. I am on the hunt for more from this brewery, starting NOW.

Batch 34.
Murky golden-orange body. Mountainous pale beige head slowly sizzles its way down to a substancial lacing.
Dough and candied sweetness on the nose. Sizable amounts of dark and tropical fruits as well.
Peppery taste off the bat. Then in come the fruits. Some pineapple and rum-soaked raisin sweetness. Some slight carmel and toffee notes. Turns bready and dough-like towards the middle. Alcohol rears back and roars. Slayed only by the grapefruit hops at the finish.
Full bodied and creamy, yet spritzy with the high CO2 levels. Quite delighful and interesting in the mouth.
Actually seems much stronger then the listed 6% ABW (7.2 ABV). As it is certainly a major player here, both in the taste and in the warmth it provides.
The more I drink this, the more I like it. Another winner from Hair of the Dog.

Batch 38. A gem. Abundant head leaving enormous cream at end. Belgian Golden colour. Floral with honey and candi aroma. Appropriate understaed carbonation, tasty yeast and spices including pepercorn. stacks up with Ommegang at the top of the American Belgian creations. Creamy mouthfeel, satisfying sweetness. Crisp clean finish.

Batch 32. Rose pours a flat, yet brilliant auburn haze. Spiced honey notes are present in the aromatics with trace notes of hops and yeast. Vinous, honey, herbal and fruity notes are most prominent flavor-wise, along with a commanding sweetness. The finish features zesty citrus, green apple, and alcohol notes. Smooth, mellow mouthfeel is quite appealing, but doesn't do much to overcome the shortcomings of the flavor. Even still, this is a mellow, drinkable beer that has aged decently. Certainly not similar to the most traditional renderings of this style. While it lacks some character, it's not a bad beer in its own right.

Bottle from Liquid Solutions.

Pours a very murky amber color with a massive white head that never totally goes away.

Aroma is yeast, apple, sweet malt, and candi sugar.

Flavor is lots of Belgian yeast, candi sugar, sweet malt, sour apple and other light fruits, floral notes, sherry-like oxidation, and spices. Gets better as it goes on and is very complex.

Body is medium with average carbonation and a long, spicy finish.

Drinkability is where this beer suffers a bit. I struggled to get through the 12oz bottle. This has aged very well and is good overall, but is still not one of my favorite HotD beers.

Poured a nice bubbly white head, slightlly cloudy golden body (double-clutched on the pour). Super head retention

Smell: Honey, malt & alcohol comes through

Taste: Presence of honey and dates, with slight taste of leather and a hop bitterness that washes nicely over roof of the mouth and throat

Mouthfeel: Big body and treacle like smoothness

Drinkability: Hits the mark despite is strength leaves you wanting more.

Beautiful amber-gold in hue, it had a wonderful sparkle to it, until I stopped paying attention to the pour (or was I too transfixed with the beauty of the liquid?) and got some yeast in my glass. Oh well. The head was loud and active; at the apex the foam was almost two-fingers in height. The head quickly faded to a bubbly cap, which was about a half finger in height. In time this cap fell apart to a soapy residue. There wasn’t much subsequent lacing, only some spotty clumps that didn’t really cling that well. On the whole, the appearance is attractive. I assumed before I even smelled this beer it would not be a traditional Tripel, actually I would have been really bummed out if it did. My first sniff was lovely, big, bready, alcoholic, grainy, hot, burnt honey… still in the process of cooking. Lightly nutty, flowery with deep fruity notes; I can smell melons, apples, dates, raisins soaked in spiced rum, brown sugar, caramel, and very earthy malt with a hint of charred wood. The potency is high. I only get a hint that this beer is Belgian in nature; it comes across as a barleywine. I love HoftD. The palate is greatly influenced by the mouthfeel. While the nose doesn’t say much with a Belgian flair the carbonation is massive and lively and it greatly transforms the taste. It is not until the finish, after the bubbles have rested a bit, does this beer taste like what the bouquet was expressing. At first, I get raw bitterness with a herbal bite, this is very Tripel-like. Then a fruity combination enters the mix, peaches, melons, dates, and raisins. Walnuts and some caramel candy follow this and brown sugar syrup with a kiss of maple tree sap is on the side. The beer is less Tripel-like now. At the finish this beer turns American. It is a big, angry American beer with big, bold alcohol notes, hot, spicy, with burnt honey and tons of maltiness. The aftertaste is hot and raw with a bit of peppery residue that says, “See, I was Belgian after all.” The palate is very complex and very layered. There are seamless transitions from start to finish, the flavors are not as deep as Adam or Fred but Rose holds she own, plus it goes in a whole different direction. As I sip this beer I want nothing more than cheese, sharp cheddar or smoked Gouda. Hell, give me some grapes while you’re at it. I like this beer because it is not a Tripel and it is not a bad retention of a Tripel, it is just a damn good beer with Belgian flamboyance and American creativity. Medium/medium full in body, carbonation is lively (like I said above), I really like the mouthfeel, and it gives the impression of two beers in one! Drinkable? It is like suckling at the teat of a goddess. I shall place Rose on a pedestal. I shall worship in her glory. I shall find more of this beer. My lone 12-ounce bottle was purchased in Burnsville, MN. This is yet another great HoftD, seek it out but don’t expect a Westmalle!

Pours a dark, cloudy lemon with an effervescent white head. Smell is a nice blend of citrus, lemon peel and faint alcohol. Taste presents itself with a touch of malt on the fron that is quickly followed by a citrusy burst that finishes with a lightly bitter quality. Mouthfeel is mainly dry, except for the initial malt notes. Very easy on the drinkability scale. If you like a dry quality as I do, you will like this brew.

Batch #32. There was no head with this beer when it was poured into my glass. The body was carbonated, cloudy and there was some yeast observed. The hue reminded me of the hue of cider. The nose was that of alcohol and vinegar and the flavor was sour and also of alcohol. The mouthfeel was tingly, thin and watery. I could definitely taste the alcohol in this beer and it is a beer to be sipped and not guzzled in my opinion.

A 12 oz bottle from Liquid Solutions.

A: The tripel is surprisingly dark, amber to red with a haziness that enhances the dry red color (if dry is the proper adjective for a color). Head was active, gradually spilling out of the bottle before pour. Lacing is extensive.

S: The aroma is beet, with a dry peanut like finish. The spices that I expected did not show up.

T: The taste, ahh the taste. What can be said about it? The flavor is the same as I picked up in the nose, beety. I must say that I am not a fan. The flavor is dry, to the point that one instinctively reaches for another sip. Some sugary sweetness emerges at the end of a sip, but it it tainted by that distinct flavor. Is this what hibiscus tastes like?

M: The mouthfeel is unusual, almost undrinkable in its dryness. Despite that, I am drawn to the novelty of the beer. It intrigues me like a roadside accident.

D: HotD does not disappoint in its spunk, this beer will not win any awards in my book but it breaks barriers.

A - Dark bronze caramel color, with a 1/2 head... Extremely large amount of unwelcome sediment... I consider myself a rather skilled poorer and find it near impossible to keep the sediment in the bottle... Appearance of so much sediment was worrisome...

S - Fruity with scents of apples, cherries, and pears...

T - Spicy and dry with fruit flavors... Some nutty characteristics... Certain aspects reminded me of a Riesling Wine...

M - Dry but very smooth, very good mouthfeel...

D - The beer would have been quite enjoyable if not for the over abundance of sediment present... The presence of the sediment made an other wise nice beer near undrinkable...
