Score is an average of the following two vintages consumed on the same day.
2010 bottle. Pours a salmon/ruby with a very large head. Nose is big caramel malt, honey, red apple, some dust and cardboard. Mouth is big, sweet, chewy and juicy, malt forward with honey, sweet apple, perhaps a touch of toffee, and and moderately hopped finish with some alcohol burn. A light cardboard on the finish that I'm surprised with a bottle this young, which detracts quite a bit. 3.4
2009 bottle drank beside the 2010 pours a ruby/copper with a small head. The nose is not as malt aggressive, with rich tones of sap, red apple, and a nice malt complexity. Super rich, silky feel in the mouth. Flavor has a lot of the qualities of the 2010 but in a far more refined package that allows the burnt sugars, toasted marshmallow to shine. Some pine sap bitterness on the finish, and none of the oxidation of the 2010. A great vintage. 4.2
